The British on holiday

Flip me! I have just watched the news and seen the item about the passenger who "fell off the back of the ship" whilst on a cruise. I am lucky enough to have cruised a great deal and there is no way you can just fall off! The barriers around the decks and cabins are very high. It seems that, as well as falling off balconies in Spain, people are managing to dive into the ocean as part of their holiday experience.

OP posts:

One paper said that she may have had a lifebuoy.

keyboardkate · 19/08/2018 23:32

Will all be forgotten tomorrow anyway.

Next story please!

Beautifulblue · 19/08/2018 23:34

Bloody terrifying. Imagine when it got dark just not being able to see anything & bobbing in the water? I would have had a full blown anxiety attack. & YES how the hell did she stay afloat for TEN hours?! So many questions...

Beautifulblue · 19/08/2018 23:35

But yes I agree with the odd post name, British on holiday... pretty sure jumping/falling off boats & balconys isn't a holidaying tradition I have missed!!

MervynBunter · 19/08/2018 23:45

You can fall off a ship very easily if the sea and wind are working together and you aren't careful. You don't have to be either drunk or acting stupidly.

meadowmeow · 19/08/2018 23:59

Fall = Jumped the majority of the time.

I live near a bridge that regularly has 'jumpers' - it's always reported as a 'fall' by the media. Same with the high rise flats.

Defrack · 20/08/2018 00:04

I find the way you put your post across fucking vile.

The people you're talking about in Spain have died for fuck sake, and this lady is lucky to be alive. Yes people do stupid things when drunk, and can be reckless at other times and this can have serious consequences.

However your suggestion this is a British thing is stupid, many tourists from all over the world hurt themselves daily.

Ohhbollix · 20/08/2018 07:52

Seems that the OP is using private messages to slag off anyone who disagrees with her - including those like me saying her title name is ridiculous and doesn’t match the thread at all.

Have the courage of your convictions dear.

SerenDippitty · 20/08/2018 07:56

Also, the barrier around the open decks aren't actually that high. Standard height really.

You still can’t just fall off though. Not without making some effort. Otherwise cruise ships would be very dangerous.

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 07:56

Crikey there’ve been some pretty stupid posts this weekend but this takes the proverbial.

What utter nonsense OP and in incredibly poor taste.

SerenDippitty · 20/08/2018 07:57

I did wonder if she was trying to take a selfie in some really precarious position.

Fireworks91 · 20/08/2018 08:05

You're either very dim or totally insensitive.

youarenotkiddingme · 20/08/2018 08:16

I'm actually laughing at thread title because I've heard this woman interviewed this morning and she doesn't sound to have a British accent!

She is British though according to her and reports.

I'd also like to know how she survived 10 hours at sea and how she fell.

Sirzy · 20/08/2018 08:22

The barriers on the cruise ships I have been on, and I assume all “proper” lines which this one is, are certainly at a height to make an accidental fall impossible!

Whatever happened though she is one lucky woman!

dontbesillyhenry · 20/08/2018 08:27

Well yes it's those pesky brits isn't it. Nobody of any other nationality ever goes overboard/jumps of balconies/gets drunk

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 08:28

I am also British and have managed not to fall off anything on holiday so far. Ridiculous thread title.

I can’t see how it’s possible to accidentally fall off a cruise ship unless idiocy or faulty barriers were involved.

drnectarine · 20/08/2018 08:32

On the BBC clip the lady is ushered away by another person when she begins to explain how she fell.
I'd expect she survived as the sea in Croatia is warm. As has already been posted it is unlikely that she was drunk.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 20/08/2018 08:39

My late DP was one of those Brits who fell off a balcony whilstndrunk and died as a result of his injuries.

Except he had a psychotic break and jumped before my eyes.
Not quite the same, is it?

This thread is ignorant and in poor taste.

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 08:42

Hoof Flowers

I’m so sorry you’ve had to read such a horrid thread

notaswarmtomorrow · 20/08/2018 08:44

That's dreadful Hoof so sorry what an awful thing to witness and experience Sad.

As for the sea being warm, it wouldn't be that warm even in Croatia to be able to just float about for 10 hours...

bruffin · 20/08/2018 08:45

A friend of mines sister died falling off a balcony, she wasnt drunk and her family successfully sued the travel company and apartment owners.

borntobequiet · 20/08/2018 08:58

There was a good explanation on the radio this morning about why she survived.
The sea was very warm and it was calm. Those were the main points. Apparently in those temperatures people could survive much longer - one such incident was quoted.
It helps to be female as a higher proportion of subcutaneous fat makes it easier to float.

EBearhug · 20/08/2018 08:59

The record for swimming the English Channel is about 7 hours - most people take a few hours longer. The sea temperature around Croatia is currently in the 20s. As long as she was fairly fit, 10 hours in warm water is certainly feasible. In British waters, the cold is a major contributory factor in drowning.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/08/2018 09:02

She was also cabin crew and they have good training of difficult circumstances in water

Ski4130 · 20/08/2018 09:03

OP - those people have died, you do know that don't you? People with families, friends, colleagues, plans, hopes etc You need a dose of sensitivity you sanctimonious eejit.
