To think this is not how you eat stuffing?!

We went to a friend's for lunch today. She cooked a lovely roast (I'm not complaining.)

She mixed the stuffing with hot water and let it sit. I assumed it would go in the oven as I do with mine and as it states on the packet. When the food was ready to serve, she brought the bowl of stuffing out!! It had not been in the oven and didn't taste great.

I've never know anyone do this before!!

AIBU to think this is not the norm? Shock

YANBU It's not normal - I wonder if she confused it up with some of the cous cous packets?

I can't think uncooked stuffing was at all pleasant.

Takfujimoto · 19/08/2018 18:27

No, have never eaten stuffing like that before, wouldn't it taste raw, like herby glue?🤢

Knittedfairies · 19/08/2018 18:28

My mum used to do that!

checkingforballoons · 19/08/2018 18:30

I would be heartbroken if stuffing arrived in that state.

HildaZelda · 19/08/2018 18:31

That's EXACTLY how my MIL 'cooks' stuffing. She doesn't seem to understand that it's supposed to go in the oven.

Takfujimoto · 19/08/2018 18:32

And you're still alive knittedfaries?! 😱

BarryTheKestrel · 19/08/2018 18:33

That's not at all the norm. However when last time I was pregnant I had a huge craving for exactly that. Raw stuffing mixed with a lot of butter! It's not that bad!

RubiksQueen · 19/08/2018 18:34

I've eaten it like that it was yum

I know you're supposed to oven it though.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 19/08/2018 18:35

Eugh. Sloppy stuffing.

I don’t imagine it faired very well on a plate with gravy.

Crunchy stuffing is up there in the top three best bits of a roast dinner.

CheshireChat · 19/08/2018 18:35

Stuffing mixed with some mince and cooked in the oven is quite tasty as well.

But definitely cooked, otherwise all you have are soggy crumbs and herbs!

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/08/2018 18:35

It's not raw though, it's just not crisped up in the oven surely?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 19/08/2018 18:35

My sister used to love eating stuffing like that.
Me, not so much. Breadcrumbs, onion, pork mince - shove it up the bird. Much nicer.

butterflyrabbit · 19/08/2018 18:35

I think Americans do it like that... Could be wrong though. Obviously it needs to go in the oven though!

blueskiesandforests · 19/08/2018 18:36

Stuffing is just breadcrumbs, herbs and butter (cooked inside a chicken, otherwise the name makes no sense). Where does hot water come into it?

My mum cooks the stuffing separately to the meat for no reason (no vegetarians). It's really dry. She believes that saying "it isn't dry at all!" cheerily means nobody notices that it's really dry. She doesn't have the ability to change reality through sheer force of will, but thinks she does as everyone politely agrees and drowns it in gravy in an attempt to make it edible...

berylmeryl · 19/08/2018 18:36

You can microwave stuffing for emergencies such as this - 2mins and it’s done, grill the top for crispness - oven tastes better but fine in a hurry 😄

IncyWincyGrownUp · 19/08/2018 18:37

It’s not great, but won’t kill anyone.

I like it cooked with a bit of mince or sausage meat though. In a loaf tin so I can slice the leftovers for sandwiches.

I make a double batch to ensure leftovers usually.

waxy1 · 19/08/2018 18:37

Oatmeal, suet, onions, wet with milk, salt, pepper, stuff it up the bird- much nicer too.

But off topic sorry.

Youvegotafriendinme · 19/08/2018 18:37

That’s exactly how mum used to do it when we was kids!

theymademejoin · 19/08/2018 18:40

That sounds a bit bleuch. I've never put water in stuffing. Just breadcrumbs, butter, onions and herbs. What is the purpose of the water? (Sorry, I know that's a bit off point but I'm just wondering is this some way of doing something amazing with stuffing that I'm not aware of, particularly as you all seem to know about it).

AdaColeman · 19/08/2018 18:41

Was it something like Paxo stuffing? That's usually cooked, though I suppose it's mainly dried breadcrumbs and herbs, but can't think it would taste very nice.

Danceintherain2018 · 19/08/2018 18:43

Yes it was :)

M0reGinPlease · 19/08/2018 18:43

Bleughhhhh. The best bit about stuffing is the crispy edges from cooking it in the oven.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 19/08/2018 18:52

my mum makes hers like that too. It's vile sloppy sludge.

Skiiltan · 19/08/2018 18:53

That's how my mum always did stuffing. I don't like it personally but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

katienana · 19/08/2018 18:55

So many posters have never been in contact with Paxo.
