To wish Superdrug weren't branching out into Botox

MrsKiplin · 18/08/2018 23:59

Superdrug is offering Botox and dermal fillers to customers over the age of 25. They are launching it at one of their London stores before rolling it out nationwide. Treatments start at £99 and involve a consultation with a qualified nurse. They are apparently just giving customers what they've been asking for.

Aside from the obvious risks to people's health, aibu to feel slightly depressed that these procedures are being treated as an everyday beauty treatment. I know it can be quite traumatic to see your face ageing and we all want to look the best we can but surely as a society we can come to terms with it a lot better if we reject this constant narrative that tells us we're not good enough and celebrate what nature gave us and each other? Botox always looks dreadful anyway in my opinion!

And it's ALWAYS easy to spot, even when it's gone 'right'.

TheWizardofWas · 19/08/2018 18:00

It is depressing. This whole fucking culture is depressing. Still, no one in my peer group seems to be doing it and I certainly won’t. Will just age as it comes, like my DM, beautiful in my eyes.

FlorencesHunger · 19/08/2018 18:12

I don't see the issue really, appealing to people vanity is what sells and if there's Someone trained and qualified to do it rather than a beautician who did a day course then I'm all for it.

I'm still young and don't have wrinkles yet but I have a very definite natural scowl otherwise known as resting bitch face.
I catch myself in the mirror and even if I straighten my face out the lines are there from the constant scowling.

Once my youth fades a bit I would probably atleast botox the scowl to soften me up a bit.

FruitCider · 19/08/2018 18:22

I'm an independent aesthetic nurse and feel very upset that Superdrug are devaluing my industry like this. They are basically giving botox with little to no profit margin to make everyone else look over priced. I would run at a loss if I did one area of botox for £99.

SpeckledDot · 19/08/2018 18:41

I think it's a great idea. I hope one day it'll be in my price range.

The one's who are complaining about it are merely the type of people that complain about all the things

9amTrain · 19/08/2018 18:50

Well not everyone who gets it is that way...

I've had it. I like to think I'm not a narcissistic, shallow bore!

youokhon · 19/08/2018 19:21

And it's ALWAYS easy to spot, even when it's gone 'right'

This crops up a lot. Don't the people who say this realise this statement makes no sense whatsoever? Grin

ElspethFlashman · 19/08/2018 19:24

Look at Jimmy Carr. Ostensibly done "right" but once you see it, you can't unsee it.

SabineUndine · 19/08/2018 19:32

If you don’t like Botox, don’t have it done. It’s a personal choice. Why come on here and whinge?

TheOnlyLivingMumInNewCross · 19/08/2018 19:36

I'd be tempted, I've heard botox can be a good fix for migraines which I suffer terribly from. It's got to be better than constantly taking Nurofen.

littlechocolatechippies · 19/08/2018 19:43

I find it a sad reminder that in our society aging is not only underappreciated but it's almost seen as rude. The biggest compliment you can get this days is how smooth and young your skin looks for your age. Never mind all the good and bad times you had, all the happiness you have experienced in your life that has left a sign on your face.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 19/08/2018 19:44

I'm 'complaining' & 'whinging' that we live in a society where people, predominantly women are told that their worth as a human lies in how young they look. We can't go valuing experienced women who are too busy changing the world for the better to give a shit about lines on their face now, can we?

I care that women having fought for the right to work are increasingly being presented with ways of spending their cash that involve inserting shit into their bodies so that they look young and therefore worthy.

CherryPavlova · 19/08/2018 19:52

People are naive if they believe Botox is regulated. It isn’t except that it needs a medical prescription and many do it just for money. I had a nurse friend who got her gynaecologist partner to write prescriptions for her to administer. Nurse don’t generally have any ape training at all.

Botox is outside the scope of regulation. Places like SK:n clinics are regulated because they do invasive procedures not because of Botox.

Botox for migraines is very different and carried out by specialists in healthcare setting.

Bluelady · 19/08/2018 20:06

The current obsession with looking young is deeply depressing. One of the reasons I so admire Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep is that they haven't had work and don't dye their hair, despite being in an industry obsessed with looks and youth. They're an inspiration.

Biologifemini · 19/08/2018 20:14

The top half of your face can look great. Unfortunately the bottom half becomes mis matched as Botox isn’t injected there.
Hence people do fillers too.
Some Botox looks ok but I do think it is obvious.

GlisteningRipeElderberries · 19/08/2018 20:34

I’d like it, £20 would be preferable though.

I think at least one person I know has it done ( probably more people that I haven’t noticed )

I think she gets her lips done too, they aren’t huge, I just noticed.
She looks fabulous though, all the time.

I don’t look fabulous, and need all the help I can get.

GlisteningRipeElderberries · 19/08/2018 20:36

Helen Mirren has had a facelift, and I would guess Meryl Streep, and they both dye their hair ! ?

9amTrain · 19/08/2018 20:37

The comment about it always being obvious is easily argued by the fact that you can't possibly be including the ones you haven't noticed (there will be some) in the number of people you've recognised as having had Botox...

GlisteningRipeElderberries · 19/08/2018 20:38

Someone will come along soon and say Jane Fonda hasn’t had any work done 😊
She looks great, but obviously has so much work done.
The only person who hasn’t had a facelift on TV at the moment I would guess is Selina Scott, although she does dye her hair, as of course do I

Bluelady · 19/08/2018 20:48

Jane Fonda has had a massive amount of work. I saw a photo of Helen Mirren without make up the other day, if she's had a facelift she should sue her surgeon as he was clearly incompetent.

ElspethFlashman · 19/08/2018 23:00

No she has, sorry. You can see it from the side. The skin around her jaw line is all unnaturally pulled. She just had a lower face lift on her neck and jaw. Keeps the character whilst keeping you fresh and non jowly.

Loopytiles · 20/08/2018 07:04

I once had a temp admin job at a cosmetic surgeon’s: the women working there (administrators not health professionals!) thought lower facelifts were a waste of money!
