Help me to understand antivaxxers

A very intelligent close friend of mine has told me she does not vaccinate her children. She has done loads of research and believes her decision is well informed. Today she told me all about how diseases go through cycles and polio and smallpox were already on their way out when their respective vaccines were introduced. Hence, the vaccine was not responsible for their eradication. I don’t understand this. I’ve looked at the data and for the life of me I cannot understand how anyone could think that the sudden decrease in these illnesses could not be because of the vaccine. Is anyone here able to explain this logic to me please?

What propaganda am I spreading?!

For starters, a totally fabricated list of vaccine "ingredients" which lists ingredients that aren't actually in UK vaccines.

eliza456 · 18/08/2018 00:09

It must be some kind of reaction to a certain ingredient in the vaccine if anything... just how some people have an allergy to peanuts... with the sheer amount of people being vaccinated everyday, it's very very few who may develop symptoms.

The same way a life saving treatment can go wrong, would you really want to risk not letting it go right? I wouldn't want to risk my child getting a deadly disease.

Emily7708 · 18/08/2018 00:11

It’s a hidden website for parents of vaccine damaged children, not vaccine damaged children from 2014?! Some of the mums on there have adult children and some have babies. Are you just spouting any old crap to try to prove that I’m lying or something?

Emily7708 · 18/08/2018 00:12

YouCantStopTheSignal - ooh “for starters”? And what else?!

PerverseConverse · 18/08/2018 00:14

Only if the Department of Health website is "any old crap." I'm merely posting the official statistics rather than the ones from a Facebook group. Health care professionals rely on official data, just like we rely on evidence based research.

Emily7708 · 18/08/2018 00:15

eliza456 - yes exactly. So if your child showed an allergy to peanuts you would stop them eating peanuts immediately, right? But what if your child showed a reaction to their first vaccine? Well then it’s shrugged off as coincidence and parents are forced to continue with the schedule. It makes no sense.

Crunchymum · 18/08/2018 00:15

"Hidden website" Confused

YouCantStopTheSignal · 18/08/2018 00:16

Emily, I'm truly sorry that your child is disabled and I get that you're angry but you seem to be looking for an argument rather than a debate.

PerverseConverse · 18/08/2018 00:16

We don't have mandatory vaccination in the UK so no one is "forced" to continue the vaccination programme if they don't wish to.

abbsisspartacus · 18/08/2018 00:18

Your being a goady fucker Emily

Fucking hidden websites indeed Jesus Christ no one wants to poisen children for fucks sake stating a bald heartless truth here it costs a fortune to treat and keep them alive and housed appropriately so what would be the point?

Emily7708 · 18/08/2018 00:22

I really don’t want either a debate or an argument - I came here to try to give another point of view to the OP by sharing my own experience of my family’s destroyed life due to vaccines. I don’t understand why people have to try to make me look like a liar.

Anyway I’m off now so please no-one tag me anymore or send any shitty PMs

Emily7708 · 18/08/2018 00:23

It’s “you’re”

And it’s a hidden FB site - have you never seen one?

Statistically the number of vaccine damaged children is low against the number of children vaccinated. To me, the risk of not is far greater than the risk of vaccinating. Unless your family have a history of reactions (or medical issues that deem vaccines unsuitable of course).

I'm all for debate about vaccs altho i think anybody who chooses not to vaccinate without genuine reason is a twat but posting false info? Helps nobody

abbsisspartacus · 18/08/2018 00:31

I know a family with a vaccine damaged child he ended up in a home when his mom passed away he still doesn't understand she is dead even though he went to the funeral still he is happy as Larry and alive what more can you ask for really

serialtester · 18/08/2018 00:36

Have rtft - basically if you are a vaguely intelligent and rational person you will never understand them.

Vinylsamso · 18/08/2018 00:36

You don’t really want it explained otherwise you would have listened more to your “very intelligent” friend. She would have been able to have been able to pass on how and why etc if you genuinely wanted to “understand”. What you want is for the people to come on here and back up your own theories that anti vax is wrong.

Which is fine for you to think but don’t try and pretend this is about you trying to understand your friend 🙄

worridmum · 18/08/2018 00:39

sadly Vaccines can and do cause some cases very rarely, Emily case is rare if no one had vaccinces many more children would be left disabled or worse still not live if they caught the stuff the vaccines are trying to prevent.

No surgery 100% i think the averge risk to surgery is between 1-5% risk of major complications does that mean we should stop surgery from occuring because some die are left permenatly disabled?

Vaccine related injuries are less then the averge risk of surgery complication and despsite the tiny number of cases were there is a adverse reaction is GREATLY pales in contrast to the death toil and about of injury the diseases cause some of the worst ones had a 20-40% fatality percentage and even if you did survive you would be left scarred and with other complications like blindness and deafness. so between 2 and 4 out of 10 that got said dieases would die is FAR FAR worse then the less then 1% that are effected by vaccines.

In a ideal world vaccines should have no complications or adverse side effects but currently with our level technology it is the best we can do.

serialtester · 18/08/2018 00:39

Imho having read the OP the "intelligent" friend is rather thick.

TerfAndSerf · 18/08/2018 00:42

vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/vaccine-ingredients

Your so called list of ingredients doesn't contain any active agents (the whole point of a vaccination) and is utter bunkum.

TheMonkeyMummy · 18/08/2018 01:12

I don't think calling names is the way to go (and because of this, I usually avoid these threads).

I am a very firm believer in vaccinations. In my immediate family, damage from measles in mine and my parents generation has resulted blindness, extreme allergies (think even touching an egg) and the death of a 5 month old baby.

As a PP said, no medical procedure is without risk, and that's the trade off. I guess based on these statistics alone, then there is no reason to deny the families who claim their children are vaccine damaged. My eldest has autism, and so I see a lot of families who are convinced that their child's autism is linked to this. I don't believe it at all (and all of my children are fully vaccinated) but I can't tell them that their story isn't real. All I can do is encourage people to vaccinate. Herd immunity is a real thing.

I wouldn't wish the damage measles has caused my family on anyone.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/08/2018 01:39

Yay I get to post my favourite Penn and Teller video again about vaccinations.

And my second favourite penn and teller video about vaccine ingredients:

I was going to link those @TheHodgeoftheHedge

Great videos

While it is sadly true that some children do suffer severe harm from a vaccine, statistically there is a much higher risk of them suffering severe damage from the illness itself.

The risk of encephalitis from the measles vaccine is 1 in a million. The risk from the disease is 1 in a thousand.

With Haemophilus influenzae type b there is a 25% risk of permanent damage from the illness (meningitis), ranging from profound hearing loss in 15-20% of cases to brain damage in 10-15%.

With tetanus (which is always in the ground; herd immunity is not possible) there is a 10% risk of death if you are treated in an intensive care unit.
