I’m in Italy. Not been on a package in years. Style and beauty would fall over in horror at the dinner outfits but I’m trying to keep the style stakes up by wearing eyeliner....
But- i wasn’t expecting to drink out of plastic cups. Is this normal? Can only get a drink at one bar or in the restaurant and outside of the restaurant it is plastic tumblers like I’m camping. V weird. Or is it?

We've just come back from 5 star in the canaries - we weren't AI although the hotel had the option but only for food not drinks. Round the pools it was plastic although not tumblers - it was plastic wine glasses or cocktail/gin or pint glasses so felt nice but made sense as huge winds in the canaries and loads of kids by the pool.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/08/2018 22:54

Oh and yes, mainly round the pool areas and beach it's plastic even in the nicer hotels. But then it's mainly plastic or paper in most places if you are on the beach or at the pool. Even self catering usually supply plastics for outdoors as they do here when you have a place with a hot-tub or pool.

BackforGood · 16/08/2018 23:19

It's nothing to do with the 'class' of a place.
I know people that work at a vair 'naice' private club here in the UK. It is only plastic glasses that are allowed in the pool area there too. It is a safety feature as everyone has said - bare feet and broken glass are not a good mix.

ladymariner · 16/08/2018 23:21

No need for that twatty comment senior

ivykaty44 · 16/08/2018 23:25

It’s only seems to be middle class who object to AI,

Rhayader · 16/08/2018 23:27

Ive never had plastic glasses for AI but then we’ve only ever done it skiing.

My expectation is free soft drinks, beer and wine but generally paying for cocktails.

alienor13 · 16/08/2018 23:31

I've only done it twice. Just returned from one in Cuba . Plastic glasses were only on beach/ pool or if takeaway requested. Several bars and restaurants plus mini bar restocked daily as part of AI. The only added cost was if requesting bottles of wine other than house in the al a carte restaurants. Range of spirits and brands at bars etc ai as were water sports. Was 4 *

MarthasGinYard · 16/08/2018 23:32

Only like the hi end ones

No wrist bands

No plastic beakers

No queues to book restaurants

Dieu · 16/08/2018 23:33

I did self-catering this year, and never bloody again. How is it in any way a 'holiday'?
Don't get it at all. I bloody love AI.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/08/2018 23:41

I did self-catering this year, and never bloody again. How is it in any way a 'holiday'?

I like both for different reasons. I like the not having to cart about money and everything on tap in an AI and basically not having to lift a finger, but I also like the privacy (we book a villa) of self catering and everyone having their own room and just being able to slob about, not having to get dressed to have lunch and, sad sack that I am, I quite like pottering about in the villa, tidying up etc. Because there is no clutter and room to put everything away :) I also like a wee wander down to the shop to get fresh bread etc. We usually do an on-line grocery shop to arrive at the beginning of the holiday with all the bulky stuff so the pottering to the shop doesn't mean carting heavy things :)

Polkapjs · 17/08/2018 21:01

Just back on WiFi. I’ve never done AI so no expectations. Plastic by the pool would be my expectation but this is plastic in the main bar which feels a bit odd. Of course by pool areas I’d expect plastic and whenever we’ve rented gites or SC, the house notes have all been super clear about no glass by the pool for the very good and obvious reasons cited already. We can only get “free” drinks in the main bar and not by the hotel which is s pain but my boys are happy as Larry
I’d love to be out sampling risotto and fancy wine but with children, it’s not like that.
Hoping for a lake trip tomorrow and today I felt like a princess when we went out and I had wine- in a wine glass- at lunch!

How do I decide if I’m lower level clientele by the way?

OP posts:
AnExcellentUsername · 17/08/2018 21:07

call 101

Polkapjs · 17/08/2018 21:17

Call 101 why? I’m simply asking what AI is as I’ve never done it before. It’s a first world debate I grant you but a debate nonetheless no?

HolyMountain · 17/08/2018 21:22

We did AI last Summer in an adults only hotel and all drinks outside were served in glass, no plastic.

rainbowfudgee · 17/08/2018 21:22

Last year at on holiday at a AI resort, plastic cups, plates and cutlery were used at all the restaurants in the massive hotel at lunchtime. I guess because they were catering for such huge numbers. China was used at breakfast and dinner. Plastic cups at all times by the pool. It was a 4k holiday. I was a bit disturbed by the thought of all that plastic being dumped daily.

anotherangel2 · 17/08/2018 21:32

Adults only AL tend to be much better quality in term of food etc. How I miss those days! High quality plastic glasses in pool areas and outdoor dim light bars are definitely the norm in family friendly hotels.

ineedwine99 · 17/08/2018 21:34

Plastic round the pool, glass at the bars/restaurants

Polkapjs · 18/08/2018 19:45

It’s a huge amount of plastic being dumped. Hopefully will get recycled but I’m not sure...

BackforGood · 18/08/2018 19:55

Depends a bit on the Geography of the site. A lot of holiday places, you 'spill out' from the bar, or restaurant onto the pool area, or people want to sit outside so take themselves and their drinks out there, so you may be ordering in the restaurant, but the people at the table next to you might decide to take their drinks outside.

TSSDNCOP · 18/08/2018 20:06

Just back from AI, agree plastic if outside or taking back to room and glass in restaurants/bars.

That said, it's the same in non-AI hotels that I've stayed in too.

I was pleased to see re-cycling bins everywhere and paper straws. I'm hoping by next year the plastic glasses will be the type that can be re-used.

I love the anti-AI brigade on MN. I see that senior is leading the charge this evening. Have we had that AI is killing local business, is for heathens that loathe culture and might as well stay home for all the experience they experience.

Polkapjs · 18/08/2018 20:28

I like the ease of AI but I do feel like a sheep
I very much enjoyed my prosecco in a glass at lunch and my outdoor table. Was lovely to escape “the dining room”

SummerHoliday79 · 18/08/2018 20:35

We can only afford cheapish AI holidays and so don't do them because the food tends to be the same buffet over and over.

Instead we go self catering in Greece. We don't cook at all though (not sure why everyone thinks you must be cooking in self catering!) We stay in an apartment with a pool, bar/restaurant and maid service.

Eating out every day in various restaurants in the town actually works out cheaper/the same as paying for AI in our case.

Polkapjs · 18/08/2018 20:39

Yes I think in Greece that would be great. Good for me as a veggie too. I’m eating a lot of pasta and tomato sauce! And cheese. All the cheese. I couldn’t take the heat in August though as a wilting red head

OP posts:
RedHelenB · 18/08/2018 20:43

We're currently AI in Italy and it's plastic or cans round pool /beach and glass in the bar. And the food is fab loads of choice with buffet and a la carte.
