To pay for a tv licence

Not really but goddamn it's gone up by £3 this year , feel like I'm the only person who even pays.

I have one. So do all my siblings I speak to.

WhoWants2Know · 16/08/2018 21:19

I'm feeling increasingly reluctant to have one, as it doesn't seem worth it for the few occasions I watch IPlayer each year. I may cancel it and get Amazon Prime instead

Hamandcheesebaguette · 16/08/2018 21:20

I had one.

Currently trying to claim a refund which is the most difficult and convoluted process so now I have rage against the TV licensing people.

Tiptopj · 16/08/2018 21:25

It really annoys me that I can't opt out of it so I wouldnt be able to watch any BBC channels but i could still have sky for the rest. We rarely watch BBC and what we do watch on it isn't really worth the cost.

Seniorcitizen1 · 16/08/2018 21:25

I was in court Tuesday supporting a friend and the case before was a young woman who had reneged on paying her fines for not having a tv licence, so they do chase people who watch tv without a licence

Storm4star · 16/08/2018 21:27

I don’t have one. I just watch stuff on Netflix. Fact is, people think they have more power than they do. If they ring your doorbell you don’t need to let them in. They can’t take you to court unless you sign their bit of paper. They aren’t the police and they don’t have detector vans! I get a letter once a year. I ignore it.

Vicky1990 · 16/08/2018 21:32

I gave up my tv licence about a year ago as I was not interested in the crap now on offer.
It was very easy to do and I got a refund as I used to pay by standing order or whatever you call it.
I do not miss it as I am now liberated to do other things such as this, much more entertaining .

OutPinked · 16/08/2018 21:35

I ditched mine years ago when I also got rid of the sky TV package. I just watch Netflix, prime, 4od occasionally and the DC watch YouTube. I never ever watched anything live so it was utterly pointless.

divainred · 16/08/2018 21:35

i don’t have one i only watch Netflix not live tv waste of money

GladAllOver · 16/08/2018 21:39

The BBC needs your licence fee, to pay the compensation to Cliff Richard for fucking him over.
Hope that helps :)

CaveyLass · 16/08/2018 21:39

We don’t watch tv and just watch YouTube or rent a movie on iTunes or amazon.

When we did have tv, the bbc content just seemed to be aimed at pensioners anyway.

peachgreen · 16/08/2018 21:42

I happily pay mine. The value I get from the BBC - TV, radio, news reporting, recipes, iPlayer, website - far outweighs the negligible cost. Totally worth it. I'd happily pay double.

I find it really weird that people are happy to pay £50+ a month for Sky / Virgin, £9.99 a month for Netflix / Amazon / NowTV etc etc but resent the license fee. Even if you genuinely never use a BBC product, having a public broadcaster is so valuable in ensuring broadcasting standards remain in place. They don't always get it right but I'm still glad they exist.

mydogisthebest · 16/08/2018 21:45

I also think it is good value for money. £12 is nothing for most people. I have Sky but it is so much more expensive and they show repeat after repeat.

I would love to get rid of Sky but we have the F1 channel and both me and DH are big F1 fans. It is the only channel we would miss though

BackforGood · 16/08/2018 22:01

Another who feels they get really good value from it.
I regularly watch the new, then use the website for sports. Also the BBC Sports app on my phone. I like being able to listen to radio without adverts occasionally. There are several programmes that I watch - and again, I appreciate them being advert free.
Far better value than most things I have to pay out each year / month

Ontheboardwalk · 16/08/2018 22:22

Sorry but people pay for Sky/Netflix argument does annoy me. It’s my choice and I opt in to pay for both. I shouldn’t have to subsidise people who use the service when I don’t.

Pay for the BBC if you like it and watch it. I don’t, let me easily opt out and don’t take my £150 from me.

Some of the few things I do watch that the BBC has produced I end up watching after the events and paying for on Amazon so I’m paying twice.

I understand there are competitions laws in play but if I’ve paid BBC to produce a programme (that they then flog overseas) give me access to all the shows my licence fees have paid for

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2018 22:24

I pay and couldn't imagine not doing so! BBC4 is brilliant, so is BBC radio, and at least half of the TV I watch is either on BBC or was originally on BBC. I also use the BBC website multiple times a day.

SophieSellerman · 16/08/2018 22:26

I hate the BBC and their sodding licence.

I have a licence, so the DC can watch TV on their devices, if they want to, as I don't want to end up in prison. I listen to Radio 3 all day, which is, I think, free. I don't have a TV, so (obviously) don't watch it. Haven't done for years, and haven't missed it. I only have one DC who watches TV, and she watches Love Island. The others watch Netflix (share one another's free trials) and listen to R3/4. Is this a BBC thing? Do we need a licence for this? FML.

peachgreen · 16/08/2018 22:28

@Ontheboardwalk That argument doesn't make sense though - you're not paying to watch the show on Amazon, you're paying for the convenience of watching it at a time that suits you. Same as if you bought the DVDs. You could have watched it when it was on telly, you just chose not to.

I do agree that you should be able to opt out if you genuinely don't want to use any BBC products and I think the TV Licensing company can be heavy-handed (although actually none of the people I know who legitimately didn't have / watch a TV ever had any problems, they'd just have to send a letter every now and again) but I don't understand people complaining it's too expensive. It's great value, considering what you get. And I suspect most people who don't watch TV and therefore don't pay their license still listen to BBC radio / access the website etc.

AngelsAckiz · 16/08/2018 22:29

I don't watch any terrestrial tv, sky channels or catch up. Therefore I don't need a tv licence.

I watch Netflix and Prime.

If you watch any channels or catch up then you need a licence.

peachgreen · 16/08/2018 22:30

@SophieSellerman You don't have to have a license fee to listen to the radio but all the BBC's radio stations are funded by the license fee so the people who do pay it fund it for everyone else. Which, tbh, I'm happy to do - the radio is important and a lifeline for lots of people, and I can afford it.

OwlinaTree · 16/08/2018 22:32

I think it's worth it, it's less than 50p a day. I listen to the radio in the car, I love the fact that there are no adverts!

Radio 3 is BBC I'm pretty certain Sophie.

Ontheboardwalk · 16/08/2018 22:34

Amazon I meant Netflix. 10 series of Dr Who are on there that I can’t access through iPlayer or any BBC website

13 years for the 10 series of the only thing I really watch, they’ve had nearly 2 grand off me for this and I can now only watch it on demand via Netflix

OftenHangry · 16/08/2018 22:37

I don't mind because they do make great seties and documentaries quite often.
Used to watch plenty of them before I even came to UK so I owe them😂

Ontheboardwalk · 16/08/2018 22:38

peach the point is I wouldn’t have watched it on the BBC I would have waited till they flagged it to Netflix (appreciate I confused matters saying Amazon)

SciFiFan2015 · 16/08/2018 22:39

The impact of Blue Planet 2 alone justifies the cost of the TV licence for me. There's a fab video with Attenborough explaining it.
