Not really but goddamn it's gone up by £3 this year , feel like I'm the only person who even pays.

I have no problem with paying the licence fee, I get a huge amount of use of it: Radio 4 and 6 in general (The Archers and comedy in particular), occasionally Radio 3 or 2, I watch a huge amount of BBC 4 as well as Strictly and a few other channels.

When I didn’t need a license (before they changed the rules, you didn’t need a license if you only watched catchup on iPlayer) I never had any problems - I filled in a form once every few years saying I didn’t need a license, and that was that. Never got contacted or questioned about it.

ginghamstarfish · 17/08/2018 09:51

We stopped having a licence a few years ago as we thought BBC output was generally crap, news/ politics biased, and catch-up also rubbish - if I have to pay them then I expect to see a wider range of the stuff I've paid for, and available for longer, on catch-up. They make a lot of money flogging the programmes around the world, selling to Amazon, box sets etc, so not sure why the licence fee still exists, let alone go up every year. I do miss University Challenge, but not worth £150 a year!

longwayoff · 17/08/2018 09:52

Yes. Racecar. Northern people with northern accents. From the north of this country. Licence fee payers probably. Bloody outrageous isnt it?

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 17/08/2018 09:56

I don’t mind paying it, because I listen to Radio 4 pretty much all day every day. So no different to Apple Music (the other thing I’m most likely to be listening to) which costs about the same each month.

Stephisaur · 17/08/2018 09:58

We don't mind paying it, but to be fair ours renews the month before they usually put it up so we feel like we're cheating them a bit Grin

I like the comedy stuff on BBC1 and 2, and we watch a few of the dramas here and there. Once Doctor Who is on, you won't find me leaving the house on a Saturday night ;)

OftenHangry · 17/08/2018 10:10

I just wish we had more say about some series.
Like it would be nice to have actual chefs judjing masterchef (like the rest of the world has) 😂 "Shut up, Gregg" had become most said phrase during masterchef season😂

specialsubject · 17/08/2018 10:21

tv transmissions dont come via unicorn horns. the transmitters are owned and run by arqiva who are paid by the tv companies including the bbc.

most of us are not stupid enough to watch ads, but if you watch any channel you should pay for a licence. you only have to pay if you watch live, of course.

longwayoff · 17/08/2018 10:25

Let me distract you hangry. Looking for a little pre Christmas entertainment yesterday, it came to my notice that Gregg will be touring from September
"It doesn't get tougher than this. An evening with Gregg Wallace".
Coming soon to a theatre near you. Boggle.

PolkerrisBeach · 17/08/2018 10:30

Don't grudge a penny of it.

We have Netflix and Sky and watch a lot of that, but a lot of BBC and Channel 4 as well, never ITV.

It's worth it for:

Anything with David Attenborough
Strictly
Who do you think you are?
That police drama thing with Sarah Lancashire and James Norton
Poldark
Masterchef
Only Connect
All the great podcasts on radio 4 and the world service
Car share
Children's programming
Coverage of Wimbledon and big sporting events
Loads of their drama like McMafia and the one about the woman replaced by her maternity cover.

SisyphusDad · 17/08/2018 10:34

I very rarely watch live television but am happy to play the licence fee for Radios 3 and 4 alone. I don't like everything on either station but Radio 3 has introduced me to more music than anything else I can think of.

And further to that I doubt that there's any institution anywhere in the world that does more than Radio 3 to foster new music and support the best emerging musicians.

SisyphusDad · 17/08/2018 10:35

... pay the licence fee...

Pepper123123 · 17/08/2018 10:38

The TV license is becoming more and more obsolete, which can only be a good thing in my opinion.

I haven't had a license for years. By law I don't need one and I don't have live TV or use BBC iplayer. I still get bombarded with threatening letters every few weeks, but I know they're not worth the paper they're written on, so they go straight in the bin unopened.

I would rather miss out on BBC programs than give a single penny to that organisation.

DiagramFan · 17/08/2018 10:50

Someone mentioned it previously but for clarification, here's the criteria for needing a TV license...

What is live TV and when do I need a licence for it?

Live TV means any programme you watch or record as it’s being shown on TV or live on any online TV service. It’s not just live events like sport, news and music. It covers all programmes on any channel, including soaps, series, documentaries and even movies.

If you’re watching live TV, you need to be covered by a TV Licence:

if you’re watching on TV or on an online TV service
for all channels, not just the BBC
if you record a programme and watch it later
if you watch a programme on a delay
    to watch or record repeats
to watch or record programmes on +1, +2 and +24 channels
to watch live programmes on Red Button services
even if you already pay for cable, satellite or other TV services

An online TV service is any streaming or smart TV service, website or app that lets you watch live TV over the internet. This includes services like All 4, Sky Go, Virgin Media, Now TV, BT TV, Apple TV, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video and ITV Hub.

NameChangeEverydayLOL · 17/08/2018 10:52

i dont think ill bother when we get our own place. we only watch netflix and amazon prime now and have done for 2 years straight. SKY etc is far too expensive in itself and you dont even use most of the channels.

Smart TV and catch up will do!

PolkerrisBeach · 17/08/2018 10:53

I think people are missing the point that if everyone stops paying the licence fee, there will be no Doctor Who, Poldark, Line of Duty or any other BBC shows to watch on Netflix as they won't be made in the first place.

Vicky1990 · 17/08/2018 11:20

As far as I know you do not need a licence to watch itv catchup.

RebootYourEngine · 17/08/2018 11:33

I pay the fee because there are some good programmes on the bbc. There may not be a huge amount however those few that i do watch are worth it.

Kittysacunt · 17/08/2018 12:00

2 years ago we said we no longer needed one, unplugged the cable as the smart tv doesn’t use it. We only watch Netflix, 4od and prime. Never had another letter/call etc

Nearlyhaveahouse · 17/08/2018 12:07

Please pay... Otherwise we're out of a job and I'll be on benefits and probably lose my house...!
For those who like listening to the radio, there are ppl spending weeks making one programme for you to listen to and they need paying Smile
I think bbc could spend a bit of money communicating how they spend their money. Might help ppl understand.

SlartiAardvark · 17/08/2018 12:11

I have one, we have Netflix, Amazon Prime & a host of channels on the Virgin box & I still think the BBC is bloody good value.

I've taken to recording anything I want to watch if it's on Channel 4 (for example) so I can fast forward through the incessant adverts.

I'd willingly pay more to get more ad free channels....

longwayoff · 17/08/2018 12:14

You dont know what you've got till its gone. We'll be very sorry if we ever lose the BBC.

KlutzyDraconequus · 17/08/2018 12:27

You dont know what you've got till its gone. We'll be very sorry if we ever lose the BBC.

I wouldn't give a flying fuck if it went tomorrow.

Bunch of bullying arseholes criminalising people than can't afford £12 a month. Well done them. We should be very proud of a government sponsored, government mouthpiece that spends public money on products they then profit from and all the time they harass innocent people and prosecute poor people and give them a criminal record.
Woo round of applause for them...

peachgreen · 17/08/2018 12:48

Tbh I would pay even if I didn't watch any live telly. I listen to the radio loads, the website is my go-to for news and recipes, I think the documentary-making is unparalleled and even if I didn't catch them on TV I've watched loads of brilliant shows they've commissioned (GBBO, Line of Duty, Detectorists etc etc).

GladAllOver · 17/08/2018 13:48

Netflix
Amazon
Sky
Virgin

  • all US owned, and showing US programmes.

For all the BBC's faults, we do need a UK broadcaster making British programming.

Cooroo · 17/08/2018 13:56

Detectorists. Only Connect. BBC4. Radio 4. Radio 3. Worth every penny although we mostly watch Netflix!
