To worry that hoovering the bathroom is unhygienic

I have a guy painting my bathroom today and when I came back from the shops he was hoovering the floor where he'd been doing some sanding.

AIBU to feel a bit squeamish at the thought of hoovering my kitchen and the rest of the house with a hoover that's been used near where the toilet's been flushed?

For once really hope I get told I'm being daft.

Impressed that he vacuumed. You're being daft. Smile

pigsDOfly · 16/08/2018 16:16

Yes, MeeWhoo is right about the fine dust. I had a perfectly good hoover ruined by a workman using it for building dust.

bluerunningshoes · 16/08/2018 16:17

you are being daft.

how do you get rid of long hair and dustbunnies in the bathroom if not using a vacuum cleaner?

Confusedbeetle · 16/08/2018 16:18

Oh you are hilarious.was he hoovering up shit? Even if he was, you just wash the hoover. he he get a life

SoyDora · 16/08/2018 16:19

Err... what?! What exactly do you think might happen?!
I always hoover out bathroom before mopping it, otherwise I find I’m just moving clumps of fluff and dust around with the mop!

Darkbendis · 16/08/2018 16:30

Phew, I am glad you all think OP's daft. Because I always hoover the bathroom too , I have cats and their hair get EVERYWHERE!

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 16:30

@SoyDora I was taught to sweep before mopping floors in kitchens and bathrooms. Frequently I don't bother cos I'm lazy.

gamerchick · 16/08/2018 16:33

Yes you're being daft for that

I wouldn't be happy someone using my hoover after sanding though, it's not good for the hoover to suck up fine particles 'remembers flour incident' Angry

PlatypusPie · 16/08/2018 16:37

My DH apparently turns into a werewolf in the bathroom, going by the amount of hair he discards - I hoover often. Actually, he now hoovers often after I pointed out an imbalance in the housework !

LEELULUMPKIN · 16/08/2018 16:39

Waaaaayyyyy beyond daft. The germs in the rest of the house can potentially be just as dangerous as those in your bathroom. E-coli anyone? I am amazed that anyone would even think that this is a genuine concern.

MrsJayy · 16/08/2018 16:40

I have a handhekd hoover it gets right into all the nooks of the bathroom its fab

TheRealHousewife · 16/08/2018 16:40

Ya daft bat of course you can use your hoover in any room in your home. You dumpling Grin

Bluelady · 16/08/2018 16:42

What madness is this?

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 16/08/2018 16:43

See when you use the toilet do you have special bathroom shoes if not you are trailing your imaginary nasties about the house on your feet just a thought for you

This.

ciderhouserules · 16/08/2018 16:45

Great. Just when I thought MN couldn't get more germ-phobic!

So - do you wash your tea-towels and pants together? Hmm

Sometimes I think MNers must all be crapping their pants, flossing their arses with towels, following through farts in bed - the amount of screaming about GERMS! Someone suggested today that germs can walk/float/stick to you/get transfered from arse to mouth via clean washing up towels...

Now you are worrying about germs being transfered around on your floors?

Bathroom dust is basically the same as the dust in the rest of your house - dead skin, hair and fibre fluff from towels/clothes, but also a lot of toilet roll dust. None of it is unsuitable to be vacuumed!

MissConductUS · 16/08/2018 16:48

I always hoover out bathroom before mopping it, otherwise I find I’m just moving clumps of fluff and dust around with the mop!

Exactly, if I don't vacuum first then there's hair, toenail clippings, dust etc. that I have to deal with when I mop.

My Vacuum (a Miele) has disposable bags and filters so it all winds up in the bin.

Loonoon · 16/08/2018 16:50

Daft as a brush.

AveABanana · 16/08/2018 16:50

My mother taught me that one must always sweep the kitchen and bathroom floor. You can imagine my utter astonishment the first time I ever saw someone hoover Shock We were never allowed the hoover in the kitchen. I really don't know why. It wasn't a hygiene thing - it just Wasn't Done.

Happyhippy45 · 16/08/2018 16:52

Slightly daft but I can relate. I used to hoover rest of house then do the bathroom last. Completely pointless exercise really but it made me feel better.
I think there must be something in it because they have separate mops/brushes etc in kitchens and hospitals to help prevent cross contamination.

category12 · 16/08/2018 16:54

You're being daft. You can always wipe down the nozzle if it bothers you that much.

iklboo · 16/08/2018 16:55

You're being a daft a'porth Wink

category12 · 16/08/2018 16:58

It's very different using a wet mop in a bathroom and then in a kitchen, Happyhippy - bacteria thrive in moisture. The dry end of a hoover is not at all the same.

MairyHole · 16/08/2018 17:00

You're being daft but I have the same secret squeamishness. I know it to be daft.

ibblebibbledibble · 16/08/2018 17:01

Ehhh??? I can’t even think what the problem could potentially be here!!
