I had an awful job interview today and I am bereft - AIBU to ask for your perspective?

Interviewed for an executive manager role today, was invited to apply for the role (ie we have this coming up, we think you’d be a good fit, apply!)

I was more nervous than I usually am and some of my answers were subject to cross examining. No other word for it, exact phrase was “you said earlier “x y z. Why?” I felt stuck and lost and I’m really scared that I fucked this very badly up. I don’t know what came over me.

I am sad. I thought I’d have this in the bag? I did preface by saying “I apologise in advance, I’m incredibly nervous”.

Has anyone had a disasterous interview that turned out well in the end?

I think I would have been impressed by your improvisation skills smile. Drawing things in real time sounds much more engaging than death by PP

I was thinking the same! Why would that be a cautionary tale? Seems like Lyndor had a lucky escape!

Congratulations OP on being offered the role! Just goes to show that you can never tell!

Well done. Now remember to negotiate more money / better T and Cs

Dancetherain · 15/08/2018 17:24

Yay! Well done you Wine

daisychain01 · 15/08/2018 17:42

Well done, really pleased for you!

Thanks, everyone! I told the hiring manager that I thought I'd done really badly and she said 'it was your nerves, and you did well'. Ha!

Ruby well done you. But make sure now you're in pole position you ask for more money - it's usually the only time you can - and they won't want to go through the whole recruitment thing again. On top of which they'll see you as a canny negotiator.

They want you because you clearly know the business from the ground up, can fit in seamlessly and won't cost them time or money knowing how things work/who everyone is.

I'd also ask if there are training courses available they'd pay for.

Well done you, once more. As PPs have said, check your terms and conditions.

I actually cried at an interview for a care job after feeling empathetic towards some of the residents and thought I stuffed the interview, but I got the job despite getting a bit emotional. Hope it works out for you, if anything nerves show you are human and can be endearing. All the best

Awesome - now negotiate a salary increase!

RubyWho · 15/08/2018 21:01

I did manage to negotiate a increase in salary and also the location of the post so that I will have 0 commuting costs. Good enough for me!

I’d be surprised at someone in an interview for a senior role discussing their nerves tbh. yes directors do admit that they are nervous in job interview. I’ve done so myself (and got the role) and also been on panels for others. Also a the nerves show - I’ve interviewed chief execs for a wide range of roles (as I sit on a couple of boards) and the sweat and stuttering gives it away. In fact the most confident people I’ve usually intervi have been graduates

anothernameagain000 · 15/08/2018 22:21

Oh damn didn’t RTFT!! Congrats Flowers

missymayhemsmum · 15/08/2018 22:49

surely as an interviewer you only probe for a fuller answer if you are actually interested in the applicant/ know they are not doing themself justice? If they're a non-starter you get the thing over by going through the motions.

missymayhemsmum · 15/08/2018 22:50

nor did I. Congrats!

ConkerTriumphant · 15/08/2018 23:14

Hurray!

Raindropsonmynose · 16/08/2018 10:10

@RubyWho well done you ! So pleased for you

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/08/2018 10:12

My last interview was internal and I knew some of the panel. That made it far worse for me! I really ballsed it up. I am afraid it didn't end well but just to say you're not alone!

SnowyAlps · 22/08/2018 15:06

I’ve only just found you again- Congratulations!! That is brilliant news!!
