I nearly drowned yesterday. Really had thought goodbye was horrid.
Was coasteering was v v nervous before doing it but nudged by Family I agreed.
I jumped in not knowing it would feel like iced water. I hated it but swam with the others. I learned how to walk out of the water with the wave rather than climbing.
Second time the waves wouldn’t let me get out. They swirled me round and round until I didn’t know which way was up. I pulled my back and started to properly panic. Each time I tried to breathe another wave swamped my head.
The instructor was there quite fast but I was unable to find a breath and I passed out. I came round floating on my back with the instructor calling to me whilst he dragged me but that made me v disorientated and I was trying to scream with panic but the water kept going over my mouth. I passed out again and the next thing I remember I am in a rock shelf and the instructor was calling a lifeboat. I remember vomiting then going again. I came round to the instructor shouting that I needed to help him as the tide was coming inand we had to move. I bum shuffled up to another ledge and started to feel more aware of things. The life boat arrived and once they got me on the little inflatable I vomited lots and passed out again.
I woke up in the lifeboat house and started talking gibberish about them having names on their wellies and that we were on a boat but inside a house and I didn’t understand.

By the time the ambulance arrived I had been warmed up and everyone had been so kind I couldn’t really work out what it had all been about.
The instructor saved my life. The lifeboat people too.
I have wandered round on holiday still today wondering if people can tell that in early died yesterday

Feels confusing and odd.

Oh OP that is awful. So sorry you had to experience that, you must have been petrified. Massive hug. You're not BU at all. X

cafenoirbiscuit · 13/08/2018 23:17

Wow - scary experience. Glad you’re still here 😊

StrumpersPlunkett · 13/08/2018 23:18

Feels v strange tbh not sure but will process quickly but is it still ok to be affected by it today?

OP posts:
UterusUterusGhali · 13/08/2018 23:19

Oh that sounds terrifying.
Hopefully it will improve the guide's practice.
I don't think we realise how fragile life is until an incident like that. Be kind to yourself.

QOD · 13/08/2018 23:19

How terrifying 🤗
You poor thing. I live by the sea and aged 14 swam so far out that when i finally turned, I couldn’t see England. What a moron.
Rest up. Cry. Feel alive x

Wallabyone · 13/08/2018 23:19

Gosh, so glad you're ok. It sounds terrifying and I would expect it to stay with you for a while. Take care and do talk to those around you xx

StrumpersPlunkett · 13/08/2018 23:21

Thank you so much for being kind.
I haven’t cried at all and think probably when the time is right it will help?

yummumto3girls · 13/08/2018 23:21

OP that sounds very scary and no wander you feel traumatised. Have you heard of cold water shock? Current advice is that when jumping in to cold water the worst thing you can do is try swimming straight away, best to float on your back get use to the temperature before swimming otherwise risking heart failure etc Doesn’t sound like your instructor assessed the situation properly and combined with your anxiety resulted in this, were you wearing a life jacket? It is perfectly normal to feel traumatised, keep talking about it as it will help you to deal, but overall you are ALIVE, don’t dwell on what could have happened!

Cuppaorwine · 13/08/2018 23:22

Awful op Flowers pm me if you need help I have experience of ptsd. Xxx

Noqont · 13/08/2018 23:23

Yes of course it's ok to still be affected by it today. That's massive, and really frightening. But, you are ok, thank goodness, and things will get better. And you'll stop thinking about it. You're still in shock at the moment.

Redland12 · 13/08/2018 23:23

What a horrible thing to have happened to you, you must have been so terrified. Reading it was like going through it with you. I am so sorry. Do you think you could be in shock still a little? Sending a lovely warm hug.🌷🌷

Jimpix · 13/08/2018 23:25

What a terrifying ordeal you’ve had, it’s to be expected that you’re still very shaken. Give yourself time to process this and take good care of yourself x

Summersup · 13/08/2018 23:25

That's incredibly frightening, you poor thing.

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 13/08/2018 23:27

Horrible for you OP... Could you have a debrief with the instructor when you feel up to it?

Heratnumber7 · 13/08/2018 23:27

That sounds horrible.
I can empathise because a couple of years ago I nearly choked to death in a restaurant. I couldn't breathe for ages and I thought I was going to die.
Note: if you ever need to do the Heimlich manoeuvre, you need to do it REALLY hard. So hard you might break ribs.
DH is no weakling, but he didn't do it nearly hard enough the first few times.
