Re dd and school uniform?

Dd is 14. Going into year 10 in September.

In the may spring bank holiday she said she needed new school skirts. Agreed hers were looking a bit tatty so took her, spent 3 hours traipsing around finding just the right length and bought 4 new skirts.

I also suggested we went bra shopping while we were there and suggested we go up to a C cup as she was looking like she was moving out of a B. She insisted she was still a B cup and her current ones were fine, just a bit worn.

Spent £40 on skirts and £40 on bras.

Said last week we needed to get shoes (hers have worn out) and maybe 3 or 4 school shirts to replace the most worn ones she has.

She has now decided she is a C cup. So just spent another £40 on bras. A multi pack of 3 and a fancier black one. And the she announced that she needs new skirts as well as 2 of hers have 'broken'.

Was the first I have heard of it so asked her to bring them down. It looks like the adjustable elastic strap has been cut through the button holes. So they wont adjust small enough.

This is only on 1 side of each skirt. The other side on each skirt is still perfect.

Have told her I am not replacing them. I did say she could have 1 new skirt so she had 5 so will buy her 1 and then she will have 3.

She has just had an epic flounce. I have explained we are a bit skint at the moment. We got married in May and still paying that off. I am self employed and august has been unexpectedly quiet. Mainly.due to the nicer weather but not something I could plan or budget for as its a new business.

Dh is also self employed as a builder. We have our own company which normally pays me a wage but due to a non payer last year the business has struggled (hence me finding alternative work) which means that there has been less in the pot to pay DH as well.

I have explained all this to dd. She gets £10 a week spending money into her own account which she spends on clothes and make up. That's fair enough as it is her spending money but she went shopping last week and spent about £60 on stuff she didn't need just wanted.

I have 1 bra that fits me at the moment. When it's in the wash I wear one of my ones that don't fit properly and cope with a pokey underwire. I have stuff for sale to try and raise some money to buy a new saddle for dds pony.

Ds starts school in September and I have bought him all plain school uniform from Asda. He has nothing with th3 school logo on as I just can't afford it yet.

We aren't as bad off as some people and we are lucky that it will pick up again in September. We can afford to eat as normal (aldi tho, nothing fancy) and we can afford to spend a bit on day trips down the summer.

But there is no spare money to replace uniform that has probably been worn 6 or 7 times. And I could have done with spending £40 on her school shoes not replacing outgrown underwear that I wanted to get a bigger size in 3 months ago.

So AIBU to ignore the flouncing and stropping and stick to my guns on this one? She is generally a good kid. Works hard at school and does well, isn't usually stroppy and doesnt usually kick off. But when I was her age I had 2 skirts and wore them a couple of times each. Not once and chucked in the wash.

We also have the typical pile of clothes on the bedroom floor so even though she has had either 4 or 5 skirts all last year we still had a couple of mornings when she was hunting around for a clean one. I wash every day so just laziness from her.

Quite honestly I would tell her outright it looks like she’s damaged the skirts herself and on that basis they’re not being replaced. 3 skirts for a week is plenty.

Frouby · 14/08/2018 07:35

Lonicera rtft.

The logod stuff for ds is optional. There is a significant price difference between logod and non logod. I have budgeted for 5 x of non logod rather than 2 x logod.

My dcs have 5 lots of uniform mainly because we often got to the ponies straight from school. They change into jodpurs there but usually leave school tops on. So they get smelly and dirty.

We can afford the ponies. We are not going without basics to afford an expensive hobby. I have had ponies since I was 15. 25 years of affording them through a variety of circumstances. They are a way of life for us. We have gone without luxuries in the past to afford them. Because as a family the ponies are a luxury we chose over other things. School uniform is not a luxury. New skirts after 8 wears is a luxury. And it's wasteful.

New bras for me aren't a luxury. But an essential I can wait 2 weeks for because I am a grown up and can sling one in the wash and wear a pokey one for a day.

School uniform for ds is an essential. Logos on uniform is not essential. He is 4. He won't care. As long as he is clean and comfortable and in the correct uniform I have covered the essentials.

I wouldn’t be spending that much on bras, that’s crazy! Take her to Primark or New look!
Get her one skirt if you think she’s intentionally broken them.

I totally agree with you... YANBU! my oldest is 5 we buy asda uniform as it seems every day he comes home with new pen on it that wont come off...I refuse to spend £8 a jumper when they need replacing every few weeks!
also I think the way you are teaching your daughter about money is 100% right, just because she decided she wanted new skirts (when she already had skirts that are like new & damaged them) doesn't mean she should get them.
also very jealous about the ponys that would be my dream!
congrats on the wedding Smile

I’m with you OP. Your DD has been deliberately destructive and I wouldn’t replace the skirts either. I hated a dress Mum had bought me when I was about 10 so poked knitting needles through it..... I looked a right tit wearing it but Mum knew exactly what I’d done and refused to throw it away. The rest of your post is useful context and it’s bloody annoying when some posters gripe about that rather than the core issue.... your daughter knows money is tight (temporarily) at the moment and has deliberately damaged stuff to get new! The rest of your Post is useful context and I’m struggling to believe people are criticising you for having a clean set of uniform for each day! Get a grip people! If it makes OPs life easier then go for it....people really do lose their shit over the stupidest of things on MN!
I had the very same bra issue....made worse by the fact m&s discontinued my favourite multipack 😭 so had one with both wires in tact and two with only one wire. Due to changes in my job.... temporarily money is tight for us but for months I like you prioritied money on other things! I did however discover that matalan bras are amazing (almost identical to my m&S ones) and able to support my enormous, unusually sized boobs (when I’d tried them a few years ago they didn’t suit at all). I know have four new shiny supportive t shirt bras for the cost of one m&s one!

GreenTulips · 14/08/2018 08:12

Please can you get some nail scissors and take the wires out! Nothing bad will happen and you'll be a lot more comfortable -and ask DD to do it as she seem to have this hidden talent!

Thank you Rachel and Piefaced. I should have known better than to post in AIBU. I forgot about the frothing over irrelevant things.

I need to spend a day mooching around the shopping centre trying on different bras. I usually buy fantasie full cup in a 34hh as I know they fit and are comfortable. 34hh is a dodgy size to find and sometimes I might be a 36h or 36hh so if I order online which I usually do and they dont fit I have to faff about sending them back so I tend to stick to what I know fits even if they are a bit spendy.

I work when the dcs are at school so it means either taking a few hours out of work or dragging ds (4) with me and he isn't good at shopping. Or going at a weekend which I can't face as it's so busy.

But I do need to make a bit of time to try and find a couple of alternatives.

I need to buy a sports bra soon as well to ride dpony in the new saddle I have sacrificed school uniform for too. No doubt that will be seen as living beyond my means too. Sigh.

I should know better than to admit to ponies. Because they are only for rich people aren't they? Not normal working folk who sometimes have to stretch and manage a budget. We are not allowed to have ponies. Just goats and 122inch tvs. And must spend on expensive branded uniform, can't possibly manage with 1 bra for a short period of time and wilfull dds can have clothes replaced she damages by being a brat. Won't someone think of the children? Grin

I don't buy the logoed versions of the uniform for primary either OP - it's on the uniform policy as "this stuff is available logoed - you don't need them to be but if you want it... it's here" so considering how much it gets wrecked by fucking whiteboard pen... they get the Asda unlogoed uniform instead (as do about 80% of the kids there after the Reception new starter eagerness wears off). Last year they had logoed cardigans and DD1 in particular always just preferred to wear the supermarket ones she had as the heating in school's always so hot that the logoed ones were too warm for her!

Frouby · 14/08/2018 08:25

greentulips I might actually try that. My favourite bra is my old maternity bra from when I was pg with ds 5 years ago. I wear it under my pjs in the house. Its too big to be supportive enough to leave the house but is very comfortable.

34HH though, I will probably sag about all over. Plus 1 boob is bigger than the other so the wires hide this a bit I think as it gives the emptier cup some structre.

Will buy new ones in September then set about pokey one. If it works I probably have 3 or 4 with either wires missing in 1 side or were digging somewhere.

OP posts:
bluerunningshoes · 14/08/2018 08:27

for primary my dc had one set each of logod stuff (for school photo, open day, inspections...)

secondary is so much stricter and much more expensive.

bluerunningshoes · 14/08/2018 08:29

if the wires dig the bra doesn't fit. I gave up on wired bras, but at only a d that's not too much of a problem.

Broken11Girl · 14/08/2018 08:34

I'd be furious with this. Deciding her bras fitted, getting new ones in that size then deciding they didn't after all, is ridiculous and as for damaging her skirts...too right she wouldn't be getting anything for a while.

GreenTulips · 14/08/2018 08:35

Wires dig in if they've poked out the bra- or in this case twisted.

Easily removed - but do both sides as they end up abit lop sided!

slashlover · 14/08/2018 08:58

Off topic slightly but are you near a Bravissimo? They're brilliant for having a wide selection of larger busted bras (34K here) which you can try on.

Also, please don't machine wash your bras, it ruins them. I wash mine in the bathroom sink with gentle detergent. If you're in a hurry and you have to machine them, then you can buy a special bag to put them in before they go in the machine.

Frouby · 14/08/2018 09:38

Not near a bravissimo sadly. Nearest one is about 40 miles away.

Don’t even get me started on sports bras! Whichever brand I use I end up with a mono breast!
