Would you live forever if technology allowed?

If the technology existed which meant people couldn't die, would you choose to use it to live forever?

No chance. The thought of having to work and struggle financially for always would be awful

dudsville · 13/08/2018 11:52

Yes, definitely. I'd love to see the progression of the gender debate, I'd love to see the scientific developments, etc. In fact what I'd really like isn't too live forever but to come back from death from time to time to check in.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/08/2018 12:01

I would imagine its only 50 years away before this happens. I am probably going to miss out but my children or grandchildren will probably be the first transhumanists to achieve immortality. So jealous to live so close to such an evolution of humanity but not close enough to grasp it. Oh well, I will die in envy.

Oysterbabe · 13/08/2018 12:02

God no. I'm only 37 and I'm already pretty tired.

safariboot · 13/08/2018 12:03

Assuming there are no "gotcha" drawbacks and I can end my life if I choose, then yes. Our universe, our planet, and the creative output of humanity are vast. I'll never run out of things to do.

ElenOfTheWays · 13/08/2018 12:12

Yes. I want to see how it all ends Grin

blurredspeech · 13/08/2018 12:14

What about if you could live for as long as you wanted and die when you choose?

OP posts:
Frosty6611 · 13/08/2018 12:20

@blurred yes i’d be more up for that but I think it would be so dangerous as the world would become incredibly overpopulated

Gromance02 · 13/08/2018 12:41

Yes - I would. As long as I have the lifestyle and health that I have now.

Gromance02 · 13/08/2018 12:43

You could try every possible career, travel everywhere, see where space exploration takes us.

HirplesWithHaggis · 13/08/2018 12:48

Like dudsville, I would like to be able to pop back, even just once, in about 100 years, to see how future historians write about the political period we're living through now. Brexit, Scottish independence, reunification of Ireland domestically... will all of the shenanigans be known, will the "victors" gloss over them? Actually, make that twice, once in 100 years when confidential government memos will be released (and the truth about Dunblane), and again 50 years later.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/08/2018 13:13

But would you. Once you have a house everything you save after that could be invested so that you could just travel. Might take a few hundred years but you could have an eternity to live

Boofay · 13/08/2018 14:12

@McNutty
Will look out for it. Is it on Netflix or Prime Video?

LeftRightCentre · 13/08/2018 14:17

NFW

RedneckStumpy · 13/08/2018 14:20

Yes, but I would want a farm in a isolated area miles from anywhere. I would live there with my family, living off the land and never interact with human civilization

Janni01 · 13/08/2018 14:22

No, the world is already overpopulated, we have serious climate change issues affecting us right now, not enough money for even basic services.
Why would I want to live longer and make this situation worse?
In all honesty I would rather they gave us the option to legally and easily kill yourself like dignitas in this country.

StorminaBcup · 13/08/2018 16:49

What about if you could live for as long as you wanted and die when you choose

Then yes, sign me up! My family's gene pool is crap so I'll probably be shuffling off in my 60's when I'd actually like to stick around and see the dc have families of their own.

haverhill · 13/08/2018 16:50

No way. We’re meant to die.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/08/2018 16:52

No way. We’re meant to die

Says who? What do you think medicine is for?

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/08/2018 16:54

I used to tell my Grannie I wanted her to live forever, and she’d pat me on the hand and say “ah but my dear, I’d get awfy tired.”

I didn’t understand then, but I get it now.

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/08/2018 16:55

It’s the circle of life isn’t it? People are born, they live, they die.

What’s the alternative? Nobody being born, if nobody dies? How would we all fit?

haverhill · 13/08/2018 16:55

We’re biological organisms which at some point and for myriad reasons cease to function. That’s life, literally. Medicine can prolong life and cure diseases, of course, but we aren’t designed to live forever.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/08/2018 16:59

No. I wouldn't enjoy it. How dull would it be, not feeling like you had to cram in the fun stuff or take once in a lifetime opportunities?

Ratbagcatbag · 13/08/2018 16:59

Yes, yes yes I'd pick this. Like raspberry I'm utterly terrified of being dead. Not the process of getting there. But just nothing. It scares me senseless and keeps me awake at night.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/08/2018 17:14

If we could live forever I suspect everything about having children would change. We would find a balance so that the world didn't become overpopulated. One in one out?

Medicine extends life, I dont hear many people refusing health care on the grounds of 'the circle of life'. We aren't designed full stop, so its silly to say we aren't designed to live forever. Otherwise we could just say we were designed to have a brain that developed the ability to enable us to cure the problem of our cells ageing/dying.
