Me and DH, and DD whos 14 months signed contract 4 months ago £875 a month, DH earns around £1600 a month, but we have been constantly living in the credit card since we moved in, paying energy/council tax/water and car insurance has just increased by 40 per month.
What will happen if we find somewhere cheaper, with the contract we have signed for 12 months here?

Could you get a job between 2 and 7? It won't matter what his work pattern is then because he will always be there between those times? Or a weekend job?

witwootoodleoo · 10/08/2018 22:33

Have you made a formal complaint to the catalogue company? Seeing as your mother has passed away I would report the fraud to the police and see if they will give you a crime reference number. Provide that to company and tell them again it is not your debt. If they don’t uphold your complaint you could make a complaint to the Financial Omudsman. It is worth a try as it will cost you nothing to try.

Beansonapost · 10/08/2018 22:34

Our phone bills £10 per month ...£5 each. ID mobile.

With WiFi everywhere we use WhatsApp and hardly text. You get stung when you call certain numbers though so might go up to £15 per month.

salopek · 10/08/2018 22:34

@Purplecrocsrock I'm so sorry you find yourselves in this situation.

DH made redundant and I was pregnant/no job, couldn't afford our rent and asked landlord to release us early from our contract given our new circumstances so we could find somewhere cheaper. Landlord told us we were tied in with no break clause. We racked up a serious amount of arrears over a 6 month period and we are now paying it back with 5% interest... whilst also paying rent in our new place.
This is capitalism I'm afraid.

planetclom · 10/08/2018 22:38

Just sell the car or get rid of it he is paying as much per month as he paid for it originally it's utter madness and get another cheap car with cheaper car insurance get rid of the gym membership Bam! Nearly £300 an month better off. In other new how about he get a bike and cycle or even run to work obviously depends how far away that is.

categed · 10/08/2018 22:38

You can get this sorted. Just now everything is massively overwhelming. You dh needs the car for work and you have no spare cash for a new one so until it sells you are stuck. You say in a few months time you will be £100.00 a month better off which is great. Phones, if you are out of contract look to going sim only, mine is 9.50 a month on 3. Look around for energy, i pay 75.00 for an old cottage with 3 bed and 2 reception so you may be able to save there.
What do you spend on food and whete do you buy your nappies? All the snall savings add up and will help you out. Debt free wanabe ate geeat and can help advise you.
Best of luck.

olderthanyouthink · 10/08/2018 22:38

The car insurance is totally believable to me. My dad offered me a free 53 Passat estate. To insure me (22, would be brand new driver) the cheapest quote was £8k a year and for my BF (25, license since 17) the cheapest quote was £3-4k a year. This is in south London.

The car needs knocking on the head asap. If he can cycle to work that's exercise and commuting in one go. Cycling and running are good for headspace.

violets17 · 10/08/2018 22:39

It's a little thing but you don't need to buy wipes, use face cloths to both clean and then a new one to dry. I used to take out a wet cloth in a sandwich baggie. Tightwad I know but I was so broke I had to save money anyway I could. And just in the washing machine with everything else.

I borrowed a book from the library called meals for £1 or something like that and got very old fashioned cooking mince and padding out with vegetables, pearl barley etc. Sometimes the only place you can save money is the housekeeping. There are a lot of tightwad tips online for instance using white vinegar in the washing machine instead of fabric conditioner. It's quite fun in a weird way if you can get into it.

There is a website called Turn2Us where you can check all your benefits. Secondary debts (unsecured credit card debts) - if you need to you can simply not pay. You can renegotiate with the creditors and tell them you are absolutely broke and facing homelessness and you will give them £5 pw or nothing at all.

If things get really serious you can file for bankruptcy, it costs about £300 and, as you don't own your property, you don't have much to lose.

With some benefits some waterboards will allow you to pay only 50% of the bill and the DWP pay the other half. Energy companies have a warm home discount for people on some benefits which give you about £150 off your bill. You can use the wifi at the library or any hotspot and giffgaff do monthly plans from £5 pcm for mobile phones.

BT Basic is a plan that enables you to have a home landline for something like £15 per quarter.

The car insurance....wow. Mine is £22 pcm and I drive a 2010 kia rio.

I would say just try to be as old fashioned as you can, flasks of tea, homemade sandwiches, don't buy anything out to eat or drink and entertainment can be playparks and the library.

CSIblonde · 10/08/2018 22:40

Forgot to say an agency near me is always looking for 2weeks only bed & breakfast for French students. You can specify male or female. Short term money till you are back on track.

Snowman123 · 10/08/2018 22:40

You can afford your rent.

You can't afford your credit commitments. Your priorities are:

  1. Food & essential toiletries (nappies and wipes)
  2. Rent
  3. Electric/ gas
  4. Transport for work

Continue to add the rest of your bills to this list in order or priority. Any unsecured credit is at the bottom.

Okki · 10/08/2018 22:49

I was paying £28 pcm on a 2litre TDI Mazda 6 05 plate. Is that fully comp with mods and no no claims or something. Also are you tied in to your phone contracts - can you get a sim only deal?

Racecardriver · 10/08/2018 22:50

T
Absolutely cancel the gym membership. Absolutely no reason why your DH needs to go. Guns are often a more pleasant/convenient rxcersise option but they are superfluous. Can you DH cycle to work? This would deal with the car insurance issue. What skills do you have? If you went back to work full time would you earn more?

QuestionableMouse · 10/08/2018 22:50

The car is insane to insure. I drive a 1.9 TDI too and pay £25 a month!

My BIL used his details and the pic was the result. Jesus wept... It's not a cheap car if it costs that much to insure.

I cant afford my rent anymore!!
PiggyPoos · 10/08/2018 22:51

I've just moved within the fixed term.

Basically technically you are liable for the rent for the fixed term, but if you discuss this with they will most probably be flexible if another tenant can be found - that's what we did.

It was managed through an agency so we need have to pay nearly £400 in "remarketing" fees

Sparklyshoes16 · 10/08/2018 23:03

Try Tesco mobile for phone contracts we've saved £50 a month by switching to them...you can get gym only memberships from £9.99 a month...I'm really confused by your car insurance...possibly best thing to is sell it and scale right down to something simple such as a Ford Fiesta 1.2 or 1.4 does it have to be diesel? I had a 55plate fiesta 1.4 petrol was cheap as chips to run and roomy...Shop early eve/late eve when most things are reduced...batch cook...this has made a big difference to our finances...definitely get in touch with CAB or step change...they give great advice...not great with the parking ticket but just get it paid ASAP before it jumps up...good luck op!

middleagedalready · 10/08/2018 23:07

We have had a tenant leave early, they paid the remarketing fees mentioned by pp but when a new tenant was found they left early. Talk to your landlord/ letting agent and try and find a solution.

lostpigeon · 10/08/2018 23:09

How far is his work? He does not need the gym...cycle to work and back instead, like others have said. Am not surprised you are in trouble with your ignorance of this idea!

Labradoodliedoodoo · 10/08/2018 23:11

He could take up running instead of gym. Get a lower insurance car that runs more economically.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 10/08/2018 23:11

Also agency care work.

PickAChew · 10/08/2018 23:15

The phones, if you're not a heavy user, just go for 321 payg on three. Then you still have it but it won't break the bank if you need it.

Bowerbird5 · 10/08/2018 23:16

Why not do the ironing when your toddler sleeps. I did it for a while when things were tight when third baby was born. I had four young, single lads. They brought the basket and some coat hangers around. I used to do it when I put DS 3 down for a nap. I'd stick the radio or telly on and had it finished by the time I had to pick the other two 7 & 5 off the bus. It was surprising how much difference that extra bit made. If you live in a city you're bound to get some I was in a village. Worth a try perhaps. Good luck with the job interview.

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/08/2018 23:21

I work zero hours in events. There is normally a football or rugby game every week with concerts etc during the week. Could you do something like that? The one I work with puts all shifts online and you choose the ones you can work so that way you could be working round your dh?

Sparklyshoes16 · 10/08/2018 23:23

Ps My old fiesta on fully comp was £202.00 per year with Direct line that was with legal cover, breakdown and protected no claims included! Honestly a car is just something you need to get you from A to B it doesn't need to be a fancy thing...sounds like you and your OH need to sit down and go through everything with a fine tooth comb...I really do think you'll struggle studying, having a young child and working without the full support of your other half...hopefully with the extra £100.00 coming in next month and the cutbacks things will start looking up.

OldGreyBadger · 10/08/2018 23:26

My mum has passed away so can't claw back any money from her or as the catalogue said i need to prove to them it was her

Lawyer here - it's the other way round. They have to prove that you incurred the debt. Which, obviously, they can't. Tell them that your mother fraudulently set up the account in your name, that you're not paying a penny more and that you'll see them in court.

They might huff and puff but it will go nowhere.

BMW6 · 10/08/2018 23:35

This is truly bonkers. If I understand this correctly you are paying £240 per month on a car that cost £320 to buy?
And you have a child???

Can you truly not see how fucked up this is?
