Me and DH, and DD whos 14 months signed contract 4 months ago £875 a month, DH earns around £1600 a month, but we have been constantly living in the credit card since we moved in, paying energy/council tax/water and car insurance has just increased by 40 per month.
What will happen if we find somewhere cheaper, with the contract we have signed for 12 months here?

I found the CAB so helpful when I was in debt.

Why does her DDs exact age matter Sunny?

JacquesHammer · 10/08/2018 21:42

Shop around for your utilities bills. Look for a cheaper deal.

The gym of course can be cancelled.

bluemascara · 10/08/2018 21:42

Why on Earth is your car insurance so high?
I'd get rid if you can manage on public transport
That's extortionate

GreenMeerkat · 10/08/2018 21:42

Car insurance 234? That's insane. That is definitely something that should be lower. What car is it?

RB68 · 10/08/2018 21:42

Shop around for insurance etc. Get tight with electricity - turn things off, only do so many washes and always a full load - use the 30 min cycle etc

When cooking cook double and freeze half so only needs warming up. Cook from fresh as far as you can as cheaper.

You can do ironing from home you will need to register with HMRC pay self employed NI, if you earn over 11.5K then pay tax. Don't forget you prob need insurance too for e.g. if something burned.

Look closely at bills and cut as much as you can - go payg on phones etc.

See a debt advice counsellor. Lots do it for free. Check out the moneysavingexpert site. StepChange and Christians Against Poverty also good.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 10/08/2018 21:43

Your car insurance is expensive. Is that the best deal you can get? That looks to be where money can be saved, plus the gym membership will probably have to go. Agree with others that rent is always prioritised over debt repayments

dingdongdigeridoo · 10/08/2018 21:44

Are you sure you can’t get any extra benefits? If you’re studying, there might be financial help available. Also, use the calculator at www.entitledto.co.uk/

RB68 · 10/08/2018 21:44

If you are money smart you can use credit cards for 0% rates but you must pay them down before bigger rate kicks in

Check what interst on catalogue as well - Money saving expert has lots of advise re how to pay stuff down the best way

Thatsfuckingshit · 10/08/2018 21:44

You need to list everything you are spending your money on and see where you can cut back.

Whats changed in the last few months?

Checking utilities can save a bit of money. However, if you are with British gas (who hiked prices this week) be careful moving to someone else. BG is always one of the first to put their prices up. The others soon follow suit.

Purplecrocsrock · 10/08/2018 21:44

Our car broke down around 6 months ago, so DH got our current car 'cheap' without checking insurance, its an 04 passat 2 litre Tdi. Stupid i know.
He won't be able to get to & from work without the car- hw is actively trying to sell it however

Is the car insurance for both of you? Assumed you are both young, drivers at that cost! Wow.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 10/08/2018 21:45

Cross posted, sorry

LuluJakey1 · 10/08/2018 21:45

He can cancel the gym. It is not a necessity. Your rent and council tax do seem high for a 2 bedroomed terrace. Where in the country do you live? Is that typical?
Ironing or cleaning is quite flexible if you are willing.

Chalady · 10/08/2018 21:45

My car insurance is £15 a month. Is that £240 a car payment?

Yambabe · 10/08/2018 21:46

£245 a MONTH for car insurance? Good grief I barely pay that for a year!

That's £3k a year. There must be a cheaper option than that for you?

SquidgyBanana · 10/08/2018 21:46

have you considered a DRO? You can do this with StepChange it will help you clear debts in your name even if your partner is working as it’s done on an individual basis.

Purplecrocsrock · 10/08/2018 21:46

The debt will reduce next month by 100 as it will be paid off.
If we can completely cut back one month and not use the credit card at all, then we would have more to spare.

Singlenotsingle · 10/08/2018 21:48

£245 pm car insurance? I thought you meant £245 per annum! That's outrageous! Go onto one of the comparison websites and see if you can't do a lot better.

LuluJakey1 · 10/08/2018 21:48

Wow, just seen the car insurance. Mine is that a year now on a 2011, 1.6 Renault.

sprinklesandsauce · 10/08/2018 21:49

Is your council tax over 10 instalments or 12? If 10 ring the council and ask them to put it over 12 months instead. You won't get a payment break but you will pay less each month.

Check if you can reduce your electricity tariff, run it through uswitch or something like that.

Your DH needs to cancel the gym, it is a luxury that he can not afford.

and as others have said, why on earth is your car insurance so high ? You need to shop around and see if you can reduce it.

talk to stepchange and see if they can help you to negotiate a payment plan for the cards and catalogue.

CSIblonde · 10/08/2018 21:49

Go on money-saving expert.com & find cheaper gas/elec supplier. I cut our bills in half doing this: it's v simple to change supplier. (I didn't tell my landlord till done & he was fine as way, way cheaper). Cash in hand ironing & cleaning work is flexible hours & plentiful where I live (NE London). Go 3rd party fire night & theft on car insurance until you are back on track. You can go back to fully comprehensive at later date. Some Councils do free cloth nappies scheme (to promote saving environment from plastic pollution). Search their website. Good luck.

LuluJakey1 · 10/08/2018 21:49

With a smaller car eg a megane or a micra, you could save £180 a month on car insurance.

Nicknacky · 10/08/2018 21:50

How can a 04 plate be 3k a year? Has your H been banned previously?

Amanduh · 10/08/2018 21:51

Your car insurance is ridiculous. You could be saving £200 a month on that. Your energy bills are very high too, shop around and change supplier. Cancel the gym. You could easily live on that salary if you jiggled things around
