Tipping is not the done thing.

You are not expected to tip in the UK! I'm not sure why some people think otherwise.
I would only tip if service was above and beyond but it is not an expectation and I wouldn't "cave" if it was crap service.

Husband and I had a rubbish meal at a well known resturant chain for our anniversary. I complained at the time but nothing was done about it.
Left husband to pay the bill and he tipped them. Bloody hell, I want my fiver back!
Seriously considering LTB over this.

Ah loveintokyo. Love belitting people dont you? So just because she doesn't tip they don't deserve a job above minimum wage?

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:09

Oh have I got your knickers in a twist Tokyo 😂😂😂😂 put that dummy back in your mouth honey.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 23:11

If she's not prepared to tip then she shouldn't be eating in restaurants where tipping is customary.

I do find it bizarre that people are talking about tipping as though it's a question of affordability though.

In my experience the stingy non tippers are not usually poor. Just rude and entitled.

Customers who were obviously less well off generally seemed more appreciative of good service, not less.

IceCreamFace · 10/08/2018 23:11

Icecream so you tip minimum wage retail workers too to subsidise their minimum wage job ?

Read my reply. Of course I don't. As I said I would be happy to pay more for them to be paid higher though. The very obvious difference is that those workers don't expect a tip - they don't budget for a tip. A waitress is expecting tips because that's what people do in restaurants. That's going to be part of her budget and a reason she or he accepted that job.

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:11

janni it just shows her true colours now everyone no works in retail has a crappy job. Her family must be so proud.

Willow2017 · 10/08/2018 23:12

The jobcenre plus jobs are only available online!
I have 4 different jobsearch websites sending me info on jobs (although some are crap. i live in scotland and they send me jobs for major companies in london apparenlty at a tiny village near me with 20 houses and a pub!)
Most major retailers only do online applications. You cant just go.into shops these days with a cv its all done centrally.
All the local pubs and restaurants are on these websites if they need staff. You can go in in person but its quick and easy to search online.

Dont know why you would think waitressing jobs are not advertised online?

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:12

@sweet. Shush, how dare you talk to her like that, go back to your minimum wage job and do as you're told.
Because Tokyo thinks its ok to belittle and say people who disagree with her shouldn't earn above minimum wage, but you're also rude for not tipping above minimum wage. SmileGrin

May I show you my excellent service skills Tokyo and offer you Wine or a Cake, tips not necessary as I'm just doing my job.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 23:13

now everyone no works in retail has a crappy job

Not at all.

I just assumed that sweet's job must be crappy because she doesn't think she's rewarded appropriately for it.

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:14

Willow cause she said she was a waitress 10 years ago so she knows everything as things are exactly the same in 2018 as they were in 2008 didn’t you know that? It’s hilarious 😂

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:15

@willow. IKR, literally most jobs are shown online now a days Grin but bow down to the wisdom on @Tokyo as she earns more then minimum wage so knows better then us lot.

@Tokyo have you decided on Wine or Cake yet, and may I point out Cake comes with a free cup of Brew

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 23:16

Dont know why you would think waitressing jobs are not advertised online?

Maybe they are eventually if they are desperate and the job isn't filled in the normal way. But usually it won't get to that stage because someone will walk in looking for a job and they can fill a vacancy without having to advertise it.

I imagine that will be even more the case "in 2018" when people are apparently falling over themselves to get a job.

ArcadePixie · 10/08/2018 23:18

I used to work in a fast paced kitchen. We loved tips. It helps a lot and now I always tip . Always. It’s a shit industry.

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:18

😂 and it still insists it’s right . You can’t make this up are we being trolled here .

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:18

Again I think most are advertised online first Grin.

I don't want to rush you or anything Tokyo but do you need help picking Wine or Cake or maybe if you're adventurous a Gin

Thesearepearls · 10/08/2018 23:20

So OP now that you have been informed that tipping IS the done thing, will you change your attitude?

PickAChew · 10/08/2018 23:20

I tip when it's not crap. Eg ds2's barber is £9 so I give a tenner and say keep the change.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 23:20

Again, it is completely unsurprising that some of you apparently think it is so very difficult to get a job. Pretty sure I could get a bar or waitressing job tomorrow if I wanted one.

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:21

I'm sorry I can't tip. Yes look down on me people, for how dare I or others earning minimum wage go out and eat and enjoy ourselves. And then how dare I not tip someone earning the same wage as me. Because obviously I should bump their wages up and not get a bump my own.

I would like for recognise and say thank you to everyone for working hard in the service industry and I'm sorry I don't tip.

rainbowsandsmiles · 10/08/2018 23:22

Most major retailers only do online applications. You cant just go.into shops these days with a cv its all done centrally.

Agree with that. Been out of work for a few years (SAHM looking to get back to work) and tried taking CV's out round all the agencies, and into shops/restaurants etc.
Only to be told to go back home and apply online.
I'm fkn HERE! In person, with my CV etc! Apparently nowhere does paper versions anymore.
Everything job wise is online.

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:24

Go on then @Tokyo. Please walk into any restaurant in Leeds, hand them your CV and ask them to hire you.

Or Instead look online and apply straight away. Grin or realise that with 4% of the population out of work and many more wanting more hours that getting a job isn't easy. Also recognise people have shrinking budgets as wages haven't risen with inflation, and therefore have else money to spend on going out and little treats and therefore there's less jobs available.

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:24

ok Tokyo I take back everything , next time we save up for months to take the kids out for their birthday I will leave one at home to pay for the tip. Anyone who can get a job at the drop of a hat must be right.

I will go back to as you called it my crabby retail job where none of us are deserving of our minimum wage and know my place . Maybe one day I will make it to be serving food where you can tip me and keep me in my place.

PickAChew · 10/08/2018 23:25

Icecream so you tip minimum wage retail workers too to subsidise their minimum wage job ?

No idea about ice cream, but if a retail worker gave me 20 minute or more of their undivided attention, then I might tip. I worked at a family run suit hire place back in the 80s and people did tip when they settled the bill.

rainbowsandsmiles · 10/08/2018 23:25

I used to work in a fast paced kitchen. We loved tips. It helps a lot and now I always tip . Always.

Yeah, I bet the ones who aren't deemed the "right" public facing job but on the exact same wage and don't get tipped would love tips too. No doubt it helps. Doesn't mean one's more entitled to it than others though.

sweetsomethings · 10/08/2018 23:26

Yeah rainbows it’s exaclty the same where I work we are told not to accept any CV if people try to hand them in

Janni01 · 10/08/2018 23:26

Also jobs are advertised online please see
www.indeed.co.uk/m/jobs?q=Waiter+Waitress&l=Leeds

Omg someone with minimum wage just showed you that actually they may know more hen you in one little thing Grin

Know have you decided on Wine or Cake and tbh I'm expecting a tip know as you're taking the bloody piss taking ages to decide.
