To not understand why people don’t return the BNWT items

Especially those that are still in store.....

.......or am I a cynical old bag and think they may have been obtained with a five finger discount? 🤔

"I do think though that when you've got someone on an auction site selling the same top in a size 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 all "bnwt" then that's more likely to be dodgy."

You mean like a shop does? Any reason for assuming they're dodgy rather than sourced from a wholesaler, ex-stock supplier, (or even a sale in the shop)? I know people who do all of these things for profit. Like shops do.

eyycarumba · 10/08/2018 10:58

BNWT means stolen. No it does not. I often sell BNWT items because I order them online and some companies charge postage, or don't take them back within the refund policy time.

tinytemper66 · 10/08/2018 10:59

I have sold items on EBay as BNWT and were not stolen! I didn't wear it and either couldn't find receipt or time had passed or I just couldn't be bothered and hid it away in the wardrobe hoping I would change my mind.
These days I am more than likely to take it back than hoard it and eBay it!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 10/08/2018 10:59

I generally return things but do have the odd disastrous thing bought in sales for later on , and when later on comes round, I think Oh no why did I buy this. They usually go to charity as I can't be bothered Ebaying them.

Atthebottomofthesea · 10/08/2018 10:59

Facebook selling groups, multiple sizes of the same item, still available in the shop full price = most likely stolen.

Not so much ebay. Too much hassle, items hanging around too long and postage costs.

winnieofwhitby · 10/08/2018 11:00

A relative of mine is an EBay seller (earns enough to pay tax). She sells stuff with labels on in different sizes etc because she researches sales and closures of shops etc. She most definitely isn't dodgy!

DMF1305 · 10/08/2018 11:02

My OH is terrible for buying something online, wanting to return it so puts it in his car & then a few months later I come across it because he's just not got round to taking it to the post office. Then I have to sell it online because it's too late to return it.

I've also been guilty of buying things in the past & putting it in my wardrobe, end up not ever wearing it & then a few months along I realise I don't like it anymore so again I can't return it.

These occurrences for us are few and far between though, so would never fall foul of any tax laws etc because it's obvious we've never bought them to try & sell on for a profit. We pay full price in the first place!

But I have a school friend on Facebook that will queue at 5am to get into the Next sales, buy a load of stuff and then put everything up for sale on Facebook and ebay. The tags are still on the items, but I know she's paid at least 50% less than what the tag says, because I know when the Next sale is on because I get a VIP sale invite on them a few days before. She'll try & sell them at around 70-80% of the retail value. I don't know if she declares it to the HMRC or not, but it's pretty clear that she buys those items to make a profit because she puts them up for sale on the same day as she has been posting about queuing outside the store at 5am, so definitely should be declaring those profits.

JaceLancs · 10/08/2018 11:03

I sell on eBay BNWT and have never stolen anything!
Sometimes I miss the return by cut off date especially if it’s not that near where I live
Sometimes I buy stuff to diet into and then either don’t lose weight or then decide it doesn’t suit me
Sometimes I buy at end of a sale when you can’t return eg M & S
Very occasionally I buy specifically to resell eg a designer dress in tkmaxx final clearance which will fetch more on eBay than I paid for it

AlexanderHamilton · 10/08/2018 11:08

Becasue life gets in the way sometimes.

this has happened twice to me since January.

dd bought a jumpsuit from Quiz to wear at Prize Giving. She then found out that a classmate was wearing the exact same one. Its a tiny year group and the jumpsuit had a very distinctive pattern. We had passed the deadline for returning it but they did offer an exchange.

She also bought a prom dress from Quiz online. She is in between sizes and put on a bit of weight so I panicked and bought another the size up. it was too late to return the other. Its still in all the packaging.

LeighaJ · 10/08/2018 11:15

At one point when I was stress shopping I had lots of BNWT stuff, none stolen. I just couldn't wear as much clothing as I owned.

ali0210 · 10/08/2018 11:22

I lived abroad and regularly ordered clothes online. When they arrived they either didn't fit or I just didn't like them. I couldn't be bothered with the faff of returning them (parcels often went missing anyway 🙄) so I just sold them on.

I also done the same with things I bought in store but didn't try on beforehand. I got stressed with thinking how difficult it would be attempting to explain that I wanted to return when I didn't speak the language very well 🤷🏼‍♀️

I can safely say that never once did I steal the clothes and the reasons for selling BNWT were completely genuine. So to all those Judgey Judy types on here, open your mind a bit!

hannnnnnnxo · 10/08/2018 11:30

I don’t necessarily think it means stolen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some items were stolen at all.

I personally have loads of items in my wardrobe with the tags still on, it’s just because I haven’t got around to wearing them yet as they’re out of season or I have better options that I gravitate towards (I have loads of clothes!). Sometimes I buy clothes to stock up on like basic t shirts, black trousers etc, I have quite a few of these items so I haven’t worn them yet so they’re just in my wardrobe with tags still on. Sometimes I buy things in the sale like heels or jackets but I’m not 100% loving the fit, so I may decide that I don’t actually like the item after all, at which point the returns period has expired.

Also I’m very busy and sometimes miss the return period, especially with online returns that need to be posted. Don’t get me wrong, 28 days is a decently long time to get around to returning something. But some of us work full time where shops/post office are closed before and after work, and have other plans over the weekend rather than go shopping, so those 28 days can pass fast. It’s obviously much easier to get to the shops if you’re at home most of the time.

notacooldad · 10/08/2018 11:30

My sister buys way too much stuff and never gets around to wearing it all so she often sells with tags still on.
Also she bought a load of clothes at the beginning of spring to wear on holiday to wear when she lost weight. She never lost the weight!!

My sister would not knowingly buy fakes and she is not a thief or would buy stolen goods to pass on.

Skyejuly · 10/08/2018 11:33

I have many items new with tags. A return is often a pain for me.

longwayoff · 10/08/2018 11:36

Sauce ,Jen barber, I put 4 bnwt in a charity bag last week. Paid for thanks. FAT. Too fat to fit I'm afraid. I thought the charity would get a better price with tags left on. Didnt realise I was making a reputation for myself.

hannnnnnnxo · 10/08/2018 11:38

Any reason for assuming they're dodgy rather than sourced from a wholesaler, ex-stock supplier

😂you’re having an absolute laugh. No self respecting major clothing retailer would allow their products to be sold from their wholesaler or supplier or as ‘‘factory seconds’’. They just don’t. They don’t need the pennies from these third party sales and can just write the items off. Faulty? Written off. Excess stock? Heavier markdowns within their own stores. They have to respect their brand identity and customer experience, which they won’t with authorising random eBay sellers to sell their products. Their suppliers are not authorised to sell their stock on either, it is the property of the company!

You’ll never find Louis Vuitton selling their products to third parties to resell as ‘factory seconds’. You wouldn’t even find a high street store like Topshop or Zara doing that.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/08/2018 11:41

I found a brand new suit in DS2s wardrobe a while ago. This was purchased for a wedding we were attending last year. I ordered in loads of size combinations for him to try, returned most and then he decided to wear a kilt so the final option suit was never worn and was forgotten in the post wedding haze. It'll need to be sold BNWT as he has grown 2 inches and lost 2 stone.

BikeRunSki · 10/08/2018 11:49

I bought dd some trousers recently. They don’t fit, but I just have not had time to return them. We’re off on holiday and the return period (15 days) will have expired before we get back.

I’ve also bought out of season clothes which my dc have grown out of by the time the right season came around.

Aus84 · 10/08/2018 11:52

I have one listed on eBay at the moment. I bought it online but even though its labelled a particular size, it definitely runs larger so doesn't fit. Gorgeous dress from a great brand but can't return sale items.

notsmartenough · 10/08/2018 11:53

I wouldn't assume that anything BNWT on Ebay is stolen - half the time it's probably for any of the reasons mentioned by previous posters.

I've bought a lot of BNWT clothes from Ebay in the past and many of them had the same smell. I thought it was a coincidence that all the sellers seemed to use the same washing powder but then I volunteered in a charity shop and the clothes all smelled similar. The manager used a spray on them and I suspect others must do the same (or put something in the steamer water).
Since then I've stopped buying from Ebay and buy directly from the charity shop!

We get a lot of people buying to sell straight on Ebay, anything with tags on, designer stuff etc.

Not quite the same thing but we've also had a couple of young women in buying lots of clothes with tags on.
Apparently their boyfriends give them the money for them. Not what they actually paid but the price on the tag!

I've never bought anything off Facebook though as I wouldn't be able to tell if it is fake or stolen.

As for my own wardrobe, I buy stuff either online or on the high street and hardly ever take it back as I think I'll lose weight. So, it's still in my wardrobe until I clear it out and take to the charity shop.

ballseditupagain · 10/08/2018 11:54

I've sold stuff bnwt and haven't stolen it. How ridiculous. Generally it's because it was a gift and I didn't have the receipt or I missed the often small window for returns. Or I thought I was going to loose weight and didn't. Sometimes bought in sale for not very much so not losing much again to sell on and less hassle.

BertieBotts · 10/08/2018 11:56

I am totally useless at returning things to the point that I would probably have to sell rather than attempt a return.

Then again I would also be crap at selling things because getting to a postbox is similarly hard (less so now we have a Hermes packetshop opened just next door!) and I'm rubbish at arranging meet ups, but generally these days I just try not to buy things unless I'm 100% sure because I know I won't be able to return the item in time.

But then by the time I sell it on it's not usually in store any more.

Howhot · 10/08/2018 11:56

I used to buy lovely dresses that I'd vow to fit into one day and eventually admit defeat and donate to charity. I know better now....

WhentheDealGoesDown · 10/08/2018 11:57

AUS84 In the UK , you can return sale online goods, its 14 days to let them know you are cancelling the order then 14 days to return, its the distance selling regulations.

ScattyCharly · 10/08/2018 11:58

I gave something BNWT to the charity shop yesterday. It was a pack of socks which would have cost me more to post back or drive back to the store I had it delivered from.

Also people sometimes sell BNWT stuff if it’s past the return deadline, or something bought in a sale you can’t return. Or a gift. It’s not always stolen but of course some of it is. It can be obvious from a seller’s feedback sometimes.
