To not understand why people don’t return the BNWT items

Especially those that are still in store.....

.......or am I a cynical old bag and think they may have been obtained with a five finger discount? 🤔

If they repeated sell new stuff, they might just be buying old stock wholesale prices and reselling it. Like tk maxx but on a tiny scale

surreygirl1987 · 10/08/2018 10:27

Sometimes it’s dodgy but not always. I sell the occasional bnwt item myself. Often a gorgeous dress I bought on whim in a sale, put away for use at a wedding, then realise it doesn’t fit as well as I remembered or I don’t like it as much. I also bought my wedding dress bnwt on eBay!

WineAndTiramisu · 10/08/2018 10:28

Usually because they've been in my wardrobe for a couple of years so I'm pretty sure the shop won't take them back!

WomanInBoots · 10/08/2018 10:28

Some people have marginally chaotic lives under a semblance if normalcy... myself very much included. Actually being organised enough to take something back to a shop? Blimey. But every so often I can rally enough pep to have a clear out and a few BNWT items go onto eBay.

Plus if something has been bought in a real shop and is not faulty the shop doesn't actually have to accept return of the item, although they might offer an exchange or voucher. Many shops do refund to keep people happy but there is no legal requirement for bricks and mortar shops to do so.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 10/08/2018 10:31

My SIL passes me loads of her unwanted clothes, she has a bit of a shopping habit. Probably a third of them are BNWT. She definitely doesn’t steal them, she just buys too much and never wears it.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 10/08/2018 10:32

For me its because it would cost me another £20 to get to the shops.

HedgehogPoo · 10/08/2018 10:34

I bought a couple of handbags recently that have price tags on but I'm 100% convinced that the they were probably used, although very lightly. I think that the tags had been re-attached as the plastic link was far too big and didn't look like the type that the company would have used. It's probably easy to buy equipment that re-links the tags, unfortunately.

eniledam · 10/08/2018 10:35

I often sell stuff that's BNWT on ebay. It's mostly because I've bought it, meant to return it, but then lost the receipt/ran out of time to return it (within the 28 days).

Sometimes I buy stuff for winter in summer, or vice versa. But by the time winter comes around, I've gone off the piece of clothing. So on eBay it goes.

TwoBlueShoes · 10/08/2018 10:37

I often wonder this. I think it just doesn't occur to some people. I mean, obviously for some people it's a huge hassle to return things but I'm on a flea market Facebook group for the city I live in and some things are definitely returnable to the shop it was bought at.

The other thing I wonder about is people who faff around selling things like a spatula. You know, arranging pick up times and meet ups in town. Surely it's cheaper and easier just to buy a new spatula?

hibbledibble · 10/08/2018 10:40

On local Facebook selling sites I think they are often stolen or fake.

For some brands though I know people buy things and save them to sell on, as it's possible to make money, when it's no longer in stock/sought after.

HaveSomeGrace · 10/08/2018 10:43

BNWT can also means it’s a gift that they don’t want. My sister gets clothes off me for her 2 at Christmas. I spend about £15 on each of them. Come January they’re advertised as BNWT on eBay for 99p. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Faceisamess · 10/08/2018 10:45

Can you take something BNWT back without a receipt?

I've always assumed you couldn't and therefore never done it.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 10/08/2018 10:47

BNWT means stolen

Hahahahaha! I sell loads of BNWT every summer when I have a chance to sort through things. During the year, most of my clothes are bought online. I work long hours, sometimes it takes me a week to open a parcel and sometimes even months go by before I try something on.

Othing dodgy at all. Just stuff that is too late to go back and I don’t need.

DerelictWreck · 10/08/2018 10:47

BNWT means stolen.
Shock no it doesn't!

I sell a chunk on BNWT on ebay because I lose receipts/ change size/ live far from shops etc.

Chewbecca · 10/08/2018 10:47

For me it is because I have missed the return date. Sometimes by months/years. I.e. It is something I bought that I thought I would wear but never did and eventually accept that it will never be worn so time to exit the wardrobe.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/08/2018 10:48

A friend buys from a certain store off their discount rail. She only chooses those things that have a designer label. Then sells them on EBay.

She has a legitimate business and knows what sells and what doesn't. She has been running it for years

BNWTs does not mean stolen.

doormatof · 10/08/2018 10:49

I sell BNWT all the time. Never stolen anything in my life. I buy things hoping to be able to wear them then either forget until i know longer fit it or like it or some things that I've not had the chance to wear and probably won't.

Pimmsypimms · 10/08/2018 10:50

I sell BNWT stuff on eBay, but it’s never stolen!!! Just sold one the other day, I bought it about 5 months ago but never got around to wearing it, so obviously I can’t take it back as it’s been too long.

PixieCutRegret · 10/08/2018 10:51

My pet hate is when they ask for the price on the tag with "Just want what I paid" in the description..

zoobud · 10/08/2018 10:51

I'm so disorganised that I never return stuff or get round to putting it on eBay.

MsJinglyJones · 10/08/2018 10:52

I read somewhere recently that most women have multiple unworn, BNWT items in their wardrobes. I don't because I do generally return things that don't fit etc, but it IS a hassle. I can understand why some people never get round to it.

PatchworkGirl · 10/08/2018 10:52

I always assume they left it too late to return (or the shop doesn't take returns).

Yesiamhappy · 10/08/2018 10:53

I live abroad - costs a fortune to post things back for a refund. Also get gifts which we don’t use. None of it stolen

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 10/08/2018 10:53

Because I am a compulsive shopper and bundle stuff away, find it months later and then try and have to do something with.
Also I've lost 10 stone and now have a number of things BNWT including designer that I want to sell....op you have put me right off now that people will think I have nicked them!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 10/08/2018 10:53

On eBay at least, a private seller with loads of BNWT items for sale is much more likely to be a business seller who doesn't want to accept returns.
It's also surprisingly easy to find wholesalers who aren't fussy about proof of trading status, so lots of people supplement their income this way, on Facebook or elsewhere. Obviously that's not a good thing if they don't also declare the income, but it doesn't make them dealers in stolen goods.
