So many Irish here

I never thought I'd be doing this!
Anyway my Irish self and child are in Spain for my holidays. I'd like to think I'm fairly typical in that I'm currently chugging sipping wine on the balcony while my sons asleep.
lol and behold I just heard my balcony neighbor on the phone to....... god knows who but , the place is lovely it seems...... and I quote "but there's more Irish here now".
I'm so tempted to ask my son to ensure he brushes his teeth when he's done with his bottle of whisky.

I've always loved every Irish person I've met

That's kind of offensive. Especially as some of us are complete cunts.

luckyluckyluckyme · 09/08/2018 19:01

" I've always loved every Irish person I've met, "

well that's funny as they all wrote to me and said they couldn't stand you..

andbaby I originate from the pale but moved to the big smoke now.
I gotta be honest, I started this with lightheartness in mind but I'm kind of shocked at the excuses that have been thrown up here. I overheard the conversation, I know exactly the context meant. It was not a neutral comment. It was a negative statement. All 5 million of us Irish are just out for trouble!
Part of me wishes I could have a conversation and actually try and see what is the problem with us bloody Irish.

I've just been on holiday, it was full or Irish people! (Went to Co. Limerick 😁) ❤️ ☘️

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 09/08/2018 19:59

well I am 'English/Irish' and have noticed this 'problem' with the "bloody Irish" on many , many occasions...smirks, comments, outrageous statements...

Does she stay beneath you?

amazingtracy · 09/08/2018 20:10

fourfried believe me she is beneath me in the most important of levels. But- next door in the literal sense.

lol I thought of that as I wrote it...Grin
what a pity - your son could have started practicing Irish dancing, with you demonstrating...

SisterNotCisTerf · 09/08/2018 20:20

I'm kind of shocked at the excuses that have been thrown up here.

It happens on every.single.thread discussing the attitudes towards Irish people from some English. Minimising, excusing and then the usual “just get over it already”. I could almost predict how the threads will go now, I’ve seen it that often.

AmabelleOnabike · 09/08/2018 20:22

OP, we were on holiday in Spain earlier this year and our complaint was: but it was full of Irish! We are Irish, living in Ireland and were (irrationally) disappointed to be surrounded by our own in holiday! I'd have loved a previous posters complaint of being surrounded by other nationalities! We didnt mean that we disliked the Irish just that we wanted variety so, maybe your neighbour lives in some very Irish filled part of the UK and just meant she wanted a more exotic experience than the one she is getting.

When we did speak to any other Irish people on hols well, they were generally as warm and as friendly as you would expect and made us very glad to be a part of their gang! Hopefully your neighbour will have similar sentiments.

I lived in the UK for a decade (from the late 1980's) and was made to feel very welcome and appreciated 99% of the time. The 1% is hardly worth mentioning but included "it's a shame you Irish won't stop killing each other over there" (late 80's/early 90's northern Ireland activities.) And "us Brits are terrible at serving people because we are from an empire, you Irish are good because you've always been ruled" a warped comment overheard to some wonderful (Irish) shop staff. They were the sort of comments that would have embarrassed any decent person, whatever nationality. I would hope your neighbour had some obscure but not xenophobic reason behind her comments.

Enjoy your holiday, you seem like great Craic, love the gúna - especially for those hot evenings when you feel a bit of a dance coming on!

LuckyLuckyLuckyMe · 09/08/2018 22:22

Amabelle that's shocking ShockShock

Insomniac: Meaning that the stereotype is tall/fair/blue or green eyed/red haired freckled etc. Which is from the Vikings, Normans etc.

violets17 · 13/08/2018 01:22

I think your Foghorn Fred sounds fabulous.

wateroflife · 13/08/2018 09:42

You're not BU to call out the CF next door OP... but making your DS brush his teeth in whisky is tantamount to child abuse!

Whiskey I wouldn't have problem with but the stuff from across the water might make a true Irish lad combust!

RoseWhiteTips · 13/08/2018 09:56

“...my Irish self”?

Riiiiight.

An seo.
Not a cunt.
Love Spain.
Wish I was there.
Dont care what alf garnett types think of me.

YaLoVeras · 14/08/2018 16:53

Amazing tracy, stay out of her way. Racism is rife in certain layers of every society. Smallmindedness exists in Ireland too.

keyboardkate · 14/08/2018 17:04

I just love that the OP calls her son Foghorn Fred. Did make me laugh.

Now apart from nice gunas, red hair, green eyes and freckles, singing for Ireland and so on, how the heck would anyone know you were Irish?

Not that it matters, the Irish know how to enjoy themselves generally without any trouble. Same goes for everyone else. It is only a small group of arseholes that make a show of themselves anywhere you go.

Meandyoumake2 · 14/08/2018 21:42

Hope you met more Irish people,to invite up to your apartment and sing a few tunes 🇮🇪 I'm Irish I love meeting other Irish people on holidays it brings out the best in us lol
