I’m currently a week into a 3 week camping tour of Europe and I’m ready to jack it in. I surely can’t be the only one to find this whole malarkey fucking hideous. Sleeping on a sloping bed in a tent hotter than the devils furnace, kids screaming day and night, neighbours who hate our wellbehaved Placid lab and have instructed us to keep him near to us at all times, never feeling clean, marriage hanging by a thread, no personal space or time alone. Not even wine is helping. And 50 bloody euros a night for the privilege!!
Please tell me I’m not alone on my detest for this form of holiday and share your tips to help me survive the rest of the holiday!

Fuck camping. I would never do it, got PTSD from my festival days and the mere sight of a tent makes me shiver.

I did however do a glamping weekend I. Yorkshire- had a lovely time but had a proper bed, clean showers, toilets etc. But even that was £100 a night so probably won't do again!!!!

Learn from this and treat yourself to a week in a nice hotel next time

I loathe camping. That’s all we did when I was a kid - camp. Never feeling clean, no privacy and not sleeping well.

DP does car shows and I camped for 2 nights about 6 times and I loathe it as an adult. He would get pissed all day with his mates and I would be left to deal with the kids trying to cook on a crappy gas stove. I could feel the anxiety rising in the days before the car shows. On the day we left I would just want to cry.

I grew a back bone and have refused to ever set foot in a tent again.

I spent 3 weeks camping in a malaysian village followed by 3 weeks camping in a malaysian jungle. I LOVE camping.

Just about to set off for 3 nights in devon

mamaduckbone · 08/08/2018 19:11

I love camping, but I’d only ever pitch up once - sounds like hard work touring. We’ve just done 10 nights in France and I was ready for a bath and some home comforts by the end of it.
The only thing I would say is after a while the craziness of sleeping on the floor, sharing your toilet with other people and being permanently grubby becomes your normal, so maybe you just need to break the pain barrier!

Metoodear · 08/08/2018 19:11

I hate camping

We camp it’s very cheap I am afraid it cost me 300 to stay www.eurocamp.co.uk/campsites/paris/pa012-la-croix-du-vieux-pont/ataglance.html

In a tent I would cost us nearly 900 to stay in the shitist holiday home for the week

We are off on our thrid holiday this year in two weeks we couldn’t afford this is we didn’t camp

Pumkinfailure · 08/08/2018 19:12

I think we can safely say I’m not a camper and will NEVER be doing this again.

I feel for you OP! Drink all the wine.

Do book a night somewhere nice to give yourself a break. DP can manage.

Perhaps a future compromise could be the static mobile homes on similar sites? I love those. Real beds. Own toilet & shower.

Wine Flowers

Pumkinfailure · 08/08/2018 19:14

Those that love it, how do you cope with the lack of quiet and personal space? I’m mean, surely you just need to poo and a room with no one else in it. I’m quite an extrovert and love meeting new people but this experience has made me hate everyone around me!

I love camping - in our caravan.

Flushing loo, comfy bed, air conditioning and hot and cold running water.

No fucking way would I camp in a tent.

Pumkinfailure · 08/08/2018 19:15

Need to poo IN a room with no one else in it- bloomin autocorrect!

Mummyschnauzer · 08/08/2018 19:15

Ooh I love camping. It sounds like camping is not your thing. If your in France get yourself to a decathlon and buy a decent campbed and thick sim. Heat reflective tent canopy?sleep with your head on one of those dog cooling mats? Buy more wine with a vodka chaser. Sack it off and book into a hotel. Life is too short to be miserable on holiday

Lynne1Cat · 08/08/2018 19:16

I've never been, never will. My husband only ever went camping when he was a child. I like having a comfortable bed, peace and quiet, and being able to use my hairdryer.

If I were you, I'd spend as much time on the beach/park/anywhere else, as possible, in the day, and get drunk every night.

Notevilstepmother · 08/08/2018 19:16

€50 a night seems an awful lot.

Mummyschnauzer · 08/08/2018 19:17

Re the pooing! What do you do at work? You could put loo paper down the toilet so there’s no splash lol! Otherwise just accept that the other people in there also sometimes fart on the loo

blueskiesandforests · 08/08/2018 19:18

Camping is great fun for single nights, 2 nights sometimes. We just have a basic tent, so 3 nights might be fun still in a glamping tent...

For more than 3 nights you want a cabin or mobile home with its own bathroom and kitchen and separate bedrooms and living room and terrace. A lot of glamping campsites in Europe have those for almost the same price as the big glamping tents you have to use the communal toilet block from.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 08/08/2018 19:18

I love camping but HATE campsites. Hell is other people.

It's also much nicer with pre kids (less work) but it's a nice experience to give them so I suffer though it.
3 weeks though? Fuck no. Find a Travelodge.

Ivorbig1 · 08/08/2018 19:18

I don’t mind camping, fucking hate all the people, especially those that let their kids roam, they usually latch on and annoy the crap out of someone else. I’d book an airbnb if itscthat bad, you’ve two weeks left yet!!!

Mummadeeze · 08/08/2018 19:19

I feel so sorry for you. I have been for one or two nights three times in my life and hated it every time. Sleeping is so uncomfortable and unbearable. Poor you. That really does sound awful.

Ivorbig1 · 08/08/2018 19:19

Agree with if... campsites are shit.

FlotSHAMnJetson · 08/08/2018 19:19

I got it out of my system doing DofE as s child, I now only pay to stay in places nicer than my own home!

PandaPieForTea · 08/08/2018 19:20

We camp, but only for a few nights and within striking distance of home.

That way I know that we can go home anytime we want/need and, if it is the middle of the night, DH can go back and get our stuff the next day. We have bailed once when I sprained my ankle and hobbling to the loo was a pita.

There isn't really a good time to camp. If it's warm enough at night then the tent heats up from the early morning. If it's still light in the evenings then the sun comes up way to early.

I learnt from a wise woman that you should never go on holiday anywhere less comfortable than home and I think I agree with that.

3 weeks camping in Europe sounds like hell.

HelpmeobiMN · 08/08/2018 19:20

I love camping but even I would baulk at 3 weeks of it!

Seniorschoolmum · 08/08/2018 19:20

YANBU. I’d honestly rather stay at home.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 08/08/2018 19:20

I have never ever pooed at work! I'm with you OP. Pooing needs privacy.

MargoLovebutter · 08/08/2018 19:21

I hate it too! Cannot understand why anyone would willingly put them selves through so much discomfort. Why would you stay somewhere less comfortable than your own home? Just why?

Pumpkin sod the wine, you need gin and lots of it. Just remember it won’t last forever—even though right now 3 weeks must feel like fucking eternity— and you will appreciate your own home when you get back in a way you could never have imagined. Gin
