Wouldn’t normally claim, but delay was about 8 hours Not confident in going through travel agent as not helpful If I claim through resolver or Martin Lewis link , do I get charged? Thanks!

I used Resolver to claim back my Barclays fees and I wasn't charged a penny. It was totally free and really simple to use.

monkeysox · 08/08/2018 17:22

Can do it for free. Money saving expert info.

MyDirtyLittleSecret · 08/08/2018 17:23

The question they'll ask you is did you miss something because of the delay? Another flight, an event you were going to and had paid for, work, hotel booked and you got charged despite not turning up. It will be something that cost you money that you can't get back if you're looking for money or a refund of your flight. If it isn't anything like that and you're looking for 'pain and suffering' compensation - you're likely to get a handful of air miles towards your next flight with the airline.

Acopyofacopy · 08/08/2018 17:25

There is fixed compensation for delays and you might be able to claim expenses on top.

Easy to do via the Resolver tool recommended by Martin Lewis.

celtiethree · 08/08/2018 17:27

Resolver is free and I gave used is successfully in the past to claim statutory compensation! As pp said very easy to use.

2Brieornot2Brie · 08/08/2018 17:27

The fixed compensation (under EU261 regs) only appy under certain conditions.

What was the airline, the route and the reason for the delay?

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 08/08/2018 17:28

Resolver is an amazing site to use, I’ve used it for flight compensation before, completely free 👌🏼

2Brieornot2Brie · 08/08/2018 17:28

@MyDirtyLittleSecret

That's not true. There may well be compensation due under EU261.

MyDirtyLittleSecret · 08/08/2018 17:33

Sorry, I see that now, applying USA rules here, most I've ever got out of an airline is a night in a crappy hotel after they bumped me and two others from an overbooked flight when no volunteers were forthcoming. Like I said I also got vouchers towards my next flight - because of course I'd be booking with them again, why wouldn't I?

SadTrombone · 08/08/2018 17:42

Another recommendation for Resolver here (no fees).

Celebelly · 08/08/2018 17:43

You can get free template letters online. We got one from Which last year and got £700. Took two mins to plug in our details and send it off.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 08/08/2018 17:45

What was the reason for the delay? The rules are very black and white here there’s no room for opinion tbh., it’s an EU directive and the amounts are set. If you are eligible Resolver is quick and easy but it’s eirhh making sure you’re eligible first otherwise it’s a waste if time. If it’s TUI definitely use Resolver they can take months otherwise

Celebelly · 08/08/2018 17:50

www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/letter/flight-delay-compensation-letter-template

This is what we used. We got about £700 from TUI for a four-hourish delay in November. There are reasons for a delay that mean you don't get compensation but it takes so little time to bung in your details that it's well worth doing even if you don't think it'll work out. We emailed it too so didn't even need to post. Got a letter back about six weeks later with a cheque attached.

2Brieornot2Brie · 08/08/2018 17:52

Everyone's advice is fine but EU261 might not apply. It needs to be an EU airline or a flight originating in the EU.

Aragog · 08/08/2018 17:53

I used the Resolver link on the MSE website. Was a RyanAir flight and they sent all the details to us the day if the actual flight. Had money in my account within 4-6 weeks. All straight forward, no problems. Got full compensation available, no fees.

Sister has just done it the same way for a long haul with Thomas Cook, via the Resolver link again. Once more, full amount paid, no feeds, within 4-6 weeks.

Caribbeanyesplease · 08/08/2018 17:54

Did they not hand you documents detailing your rights?

By law they have to

mummymeister · 08/08/2018 17:57

We were delayed going to North America and claimed 600 euros each which we eventually got back from the airline. we used the martin lewis website links and did it all ourselves. pretty straightforward but you have to stick at it and nag them to get them to pay up.

MrsWOLF1 · 08/08/2018 18:00

Son got€400 he used the martin lewis site

keyboardkate · 08/08/2018 18:05

I am not in UK, maybe Resolver is Uk based , I dunno, will look it up soon. Thanks for the tip!

Last year we were returning from Malaga to Ireland and just as we were about to get on the airbridge, a bloke with a clipboard said "cancelled" and that was that. Was with Ryanair.

As it was due to ATC strike in France (where else!), we had to Q for hours (we were not the only Ryanair flight affected) and under EU rules were not entitled to compo as it was a strike. But were entitled to accom and grub and taxis etc, and a rerouted flight.

Got to the top of Q eventually, and smiled at the lady behind the desk who was exhausted. She called us into a side room. This is true. She said we were the only people to smile at her, and she had a room in a five star hotel in Malaga City and would we like it? Er yes. No problem she said. Taxi provided to the hotel and back to airport two days later, all meals paid for.

It was Easter Week and we got to see Semana Santa parades in Malaga. Was great!

Sometimes shit happens, but our attitudes to those working hard on our behalf can pay dividends too. Just saying.

Holidaysun221 · 08/08/2018 18:05

Thanks everyone Yes it was from within Europe to UK . I’m going to use resolver Thank you!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 08/08/2018 19:11

What was the reason for the delay OP?

WickedGoodDoge · 08/08/2018 19:19

Definitely use Resolver. Our KLM flight home from Russia was brought FORWARD by 11 hours a year and a bit ago. KLM fobbed us off but within 3 weeks of filing via Resolver, we had our full refund. Have just filed another claim through it for a 5 hour delay to Vancouver with Air Canada a couple of weeks ago.

It only takes a few minutes and then you can track it online. As others have mentioned, compensation depends on why the delay happened.

WickedGoodDoge · 08/08/2018 19:20

I have bad luck with flights being delayed/cancelled!

RomanyRoots · 08/08/2018 19:23

Through Marin Lewis you aren't charged.
We got 500 where's the euro key? Grin
Were delayed 3 hours.
Your airline should give you the details at the desk, we got forms that explained it all.
Can't remember the airline though, sorry.
