Cleaner with or without uniform?

I'm in the process of starting a cleaning business, and I just wanted to ask those with cleaners, do your cleaners wear uniform?

My great-grandmother had 2 cleaners in her later years, neither wore a uniform.

The only upside I see to a uniform is that nosy neighbours are less likely to call the police on them when they enter and you're not at home.

Bumble1830 · 07/08/2018 20:01

I was once a cleaner, I had a uniform, which I found better as I didn't want to get bleach etc on my "normal" clothes. Uniform was black trousers and a pink polo,(everything was pink though, hoover, mop buckets etc) not company signed though.

outofnames · 07/08/2018 20:02

Mine wear their own clothes but with a tabard with the company name over the top.

I pay £15 an hour (midlands) but they supply all their own cleaning materials so I don't have a panic the night before they're due that I've run out of bathroom cleaner/polish/bleach etc!

Cleaningbusinessobssesion · 07/08/2018 20:03

@DilianaDilemma what is your profit if the cleaner is paid x amount of £?

Cleaningbusinessobssesion · 07/08/2018 20:06

@DilianaDilemma do you mind if I PM? Smile

@Cleaningbusinessobssesion, misunderstanding? I don't run a cleaning business. I meant the people who clean the office where I spend my days doing something altogether unrelated.

Sorry, I realise that wasn't helpful! Sad

Cleaningbusinessobssesion · 07/08/2018 20:07

@DilianaDilemma oh ok, sorry I must have misunderstood then Blush

NP at all ... I could have phrased it a tad more carefully! Smile

We pay £15/hr + 5 weeks holidays at full rate. It was £13/hr, but we moved so we asked to pay extra for her travel if she'd come to our new place. She's quick, good and trustworthy so it's well worth it.

Scribblegirl · 07/08/2018 21:19

No worries! Worth a go ;-) good luck!

DowntownDallas · 07/08/2018 21:27

I'm in London, and I've thought of charging £12.50 an hour.

How will you get staff to work for you? You will need to pay NI and pension contributions etc

DowntownDallas · 07/08/2018 21:29

Sorry and holiday pay. You cant possibly empty people and only charge £13 an hour in London.

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 08:00

I think no uniform for a self employed individual but a 'company' tee shirt' or polo for a company cleaner.

toomuchtooold · 08/08/2018 08:07

When we had a cleaner we actually avoided the company that made people wear uniforms - I mean if someone wanted to wear a tabard or whatever to keep their clothes clean I of course wouldn't have a problem with that, just don't want to put anyone to the added inconvenience of wearing a uniform if they don't want to.

sahknowme · 08/08/2018 08:12

Uniform with a logo - then it can be claimed as a corporate expense.

FrowningFlamingo · 08/08/2018 08:15

I pay £12/hr for a self employed cleaner who comes in old gym clothes with holes and bleach stains Grin
That's above average pay for my area but not by much and I should probably give her a pay rise.
For an an agency I'd expect to pay more and in my (limited) experience they usually have a branded polo shirt or tabbard.
Recently used an agency for an 'emergency' clean before a big party and they charge £16/hr if it's not a regular client Shock and they weren't very good either so def won't be using them again! The boss of the agency does my mums cleaning for £13/hr I think and is great.
If it helps all my self employed cleaners have used my cleaning products and hoover etc whereas agency ones seem to bring their own.

FrowningFlamingo · 08/08/2018 08:17

Oh, I'm in the south east London/Kent borders

Trialsmum · 08/08/2018 08:20

I don’t think it’s necessary, but it may work out cheaper to get a few polo shirts embroided with your logo and claim them against your taxes.
