AIBU to be disgusted over cinema prices

I was going to book tickets for the cinema with DS age 3 on Thursday. Now there's 5 showings of this film all day, but 4 of them are iSense 2D and only one of them is Standard 2D and that's not till 7pm, so already it means I'm being forced into a more expensive viewing as the buses don't run in my town past 6.30.
So I went to book tickets and they were £29 total for 1 adult and 1 under 12, even the 7pm viewing was priced at £24.
Now if I was to go as myself and 3 children at 7pm it would only cost me £22 total, but I don't have 2 other children to be taking and again I can't make the 7pm viewing anyway.

I take my DS cinema at leat every 2-3 months and I understand that it is school holidays, but I've never been charged even nearly this much before.

AIBU to think that The Odeon are taking the piss with their prices and also with the fact they make it even more expensive as only 1 showing out of 5 per day is for the only slightly cheaper standard 2D option.

Same here.

Not surprising that Netflix has the edge.

Shutityoutart · 07/08/2018 17:22

Yep. We went this afternoon and I nearly had to remortgage the house. Such a rip off.

BackforGood · 07/08/2018 17:23

Wow!
That is ridiculous.
I was going to come and agree with you at £8 - £9 per adult being too expensive Grin

Faster · 07/08/2018 17:23

Jeez, standard cinema tickets where I am are about a fiver

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 07/08/2018 17:24

Blows me away that they charge the adult at all!! I've never recovered from the crap that was Moshi monsters Grin

MrsST · 07/08/2018 17:25

Don't live round near me then. If we go to our local cinema it's £60 for tickets and if we wanted some popcorn and a drink. Family of 4 with 2 kids under 5. Absolute joke. The same franchise of cinema is £25 cheaper if we go 10 miles away to the next one.

frecklesMaybe · 07/08/2018 17:28

piratebay ....

DorothyGarrod · 07/08/2018 17:28

In their defence the overheads are very high including getting the broadcasting rights etc. The industry as a whole needs a rethink otherwise cinemas won’t exist and everything will go straight to digital services.

RyanStartedTheFire · 07/08/2018 17:29

£12 for an adult ticket here and £10 for a children's ticket no matter how young they are. We never go, unless it's the £2.50 kids screenings.

LunaTrap · 07/08/2018 17:30

It's ridiculous. One of the cinemas near us now has all films £4.99 at all times. Much more affordable and the only one we bother going to now. (With drinks and sweets from Poundland!)

hungryhippo90 · 07/08/2018 17:30

Do u have a vue nearby?

Hadjab · 07/08/2018 17:30

OP do you work? If so, check to see if your employer is enrolled in any perks schemes. Mine is, and I get my tickets for practically half price.

hungryhippo90 · 07/08/2018 17:31

We have a vue which is £3.99 on Mondays, £4.99 any other day.
0.75p per ticket for booking If booked online

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 07/08/2018 17:33

Yep. £11.50 for an adult ticket in my local Odeon.

Luckily I can get them discounted at £6.50 otherwise we’d never go.

MissionItsPossible · 07/08/2018 17:34

I read that In the first few weeks of a film being released 70% of cinema tickets sales goes to the studio and the cinema gets to keep 30% which isn’t really a lot when you factor in all the other costs to run a cinema, including staff.

Racecardriver · 07/08/2018 17:34

Well then stop going. It's exoebsivr to run a theatre, especially if you are aircobditioning it. The whole point of capitalism is that if you as a consumer think that something costs too much you don't buy it. If enough people do the same either the price will drop or the business will stop offering it.

Summerisdone · 07/08/2018 17:35

@MrsST I'm the same, the next town over I'd be able to pay £11 less for the same movie on the same day, but because I don't drive it would cost me as much in train fare so not worth the extra travelling.

I find t absolutely disgusting, I've always known a cinema trip isn't so cheap anymore but I thought £29 for 1 adult and 1 child was extreme. By time u e bought bus ticket, been mothered to buy a McDonald's and also grabbed a couple of drinks and sweets from ASDA I'm going to be looking at about £50, I paid less for travel and entry to Chester Zoo just last month with DS

www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/deals-hunter/2018/07/2for1-meerkat-movies-cinema-and-meerkat-meals-restaurant-trick/

You can get BOGOF on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for a year for a couple of quid.

Damia · 07/08/2018 17:37

I pay for a discount thing called kidspass through work but I think anyone can get it. Gives you a discount off cinema tickets and lots of other stuff it's pretty good

userofthiswebsite · 07/08/2018 17:38

£17 per person at Vue Leicester Square the other day. Considerably more expensive than my local cinema but central London so can't be too surprised.

Summerisdone · 07/08/2018 17:38

@Hadjab my place of work don't, however my DM's work do and she could get us both tickets for £14 total, however it's only redeemable on standard 2D films which we can't do as they've only the one viewing at 7pm and we wouldn't be able to get home after, due to buses ending at 6.30.

adaline · 07/08/2018 17:38

£5 for an adult ticket here, no matter when you go. Cheaper for kids.

StellaHeyStella · 07/08/2018 17:39

YANBU don't get me started on the price of popcorn, sweets and bloody drinks.

Summerisdone · 07/08/2018 17:40

@hungryhippo90 unfortunately my closest Vue is quite a distance away by train, I used to live near one and they were always a much cheaper cinema chain. My local one is Odeon which I've always found to be the most expensive

11 pounds for tickets at showcase with the recliner seats the seats are very comfy so I believe it’s worth it and you can still use meerkat movies with those seats and if you get an insider card you get credit every time you get so you get money off in the future.
