AIBU to be disgusted over cinema prices

I was going to book tickets for the cinema with DS age 3 on Thursday. Now there's 5 showings of this film all day, but 4 of them are iSense 2D and only one of them is Standard 2D and that's not till 7pm, so already it means I'm being forced into a more expensive viewing as the buses don't run in my town past 6.30.
So I went to book tickets and they were £29 total for 1 adult and 1 under 12, even the 7pm viewing was priced at £24.
Now if I was to go as myself and 3 children at 7pm it would only cost me £22 total, but I don't have 2 other children to be taking and again I can't make the 7pm viewing anyway.

I take my DS cinema at leat every 2-3 months and I understand that it is school holidays, but I've never been charged even nearly this much before.

AIBU to think that The Odeon are taking the piss with their prices and also with the fact they make it even more expensive as only 1 showing out of 5 per day is for the only slightly cheaper standard 2D option.

We take our own drinks but I bought d's popcorn last week. 4.25 for the small size. Which was still huge and he hardly made a dent in it! Next time it will be a pack from the supermarket!!

Oysterbabe · 07/08/2018 17:43

Going out and doing stuff is expensive these days. At the weekend we went out for a pub lunch, a bog standard, unspecial pub lunch. It came to £65 for 2 adults, a 2 year old and a 7 month old. We didn't even order any food for the kids, fed them off our plates.

Butternutsqoosh · 07/08/2018 17:45

Meerkat movies, just booking for me and 3 DC tomorrow. I bought some random weekend travel insurance for a made up trip and got meerkat movie and food 2 for 1 for a year, cost me £4. Am using a code from a friend so it's half price at the cinema tomorrow. So worth doing!

NancyDonahue · 07/08/2018 17:45

There are ways of doing it cheaper. We go to the cinema a lot and have a kids pass which works out around £3 a month which gives 40% off cinema tickets from all chains. We also have meerkat movies which works out slightly cheaper if only 2 people are going as it's bogof so basically 50% off.

delilahbucket · 07/08/2018 17:45

£4.99 for everyone at our Vue at the moment. We take our own drinks and snacks. I often pay with nectar so it's free. We also have a local independent cinema. They don't show many films but they always have 1-2 of the latest and they have an interval where they serve ice cream like the theatres.

FoxInABox · 07/08/2018 17:46

Completely agree, I really do think all films will end up straight to buy online soon. As a family of five, if we go to the odeon we are looking at £50 before any sweets/drinks etc. We now only go the odeon if they have the groupon deal. Luckily we have a lovely volunteer ran cinema not too far away, which has all the latest films too, where it costs us about £21 for a family of five and the drinks and sweets are good fair prices too so we are always happy to buy them there to support the cinema.

I would also recommend kidspass. You can sign up for £1 for a month, sometimes it’s free. Cinema tickets are £5 for children and £6.50 for adults. You can buy as many as you want for that price, I think the codes they send you last 6 months. Just remember to cancel the subscription unless you sign up for a year which I think is about £30 and offers loads of discounts.

Elphame · 07/08/2018 17:47

It was £14 per adult ticket at the Odeon the other week and there were 6 of us in the room. Just 6.

I was so horrified at the price that I refused to buy any drinks or popcorn and it'll probably be another 6 years before I go again.

Complete and utter rip off and it looks like many others agree with me and stay away.

OlennasWimple · 07/08/2018 17:48

The cinema industry model feels very out of date

Lazypuppy · 07/08/2018 17:48

Vue cinena £3.99 any day. Or why don't you get some form of insurance from compare the market next time then you can have meerkat movies, buy 1 get 1 free.

Donthugmeimscared · 07/08/2018 17:49

£13 per person near me (surrey) so I just don't go.

Pickleypickles · 07/08/2018 17:49

The vue near me changed all the prices to £5 whenever you go a couple of months ago! Best thing they ever did it's gone from being empty to being packed.

Nuffaluff · 07/08/2018 17:50

We went to the local Empire today. I was amazed. Only £15 for one adult and two kids! Daytime prices.
Totally worth it just for the air conditioning!

BikeRunSki · 07/08/2018 17:52

£6.50 for adults, £5.50 for kids, everyone a fiver on Tuesdays at our local independent cinema. If you are U12 you get popcorn, a slush and a lolly for £2.20. It’s grim up north.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/08/2018 17:52

It's really expensive. I've always just assumed it's the overheads, and of course we don't have to go.
We've been once this holidays, and as we had pic 'n' mix plus went for prezzo afterward, it has been our most expensive day this holiday. 'Bout £80 for the day out. Our free days of cycling, parks, Woods, beaches, body boarding, camping, blackberry picking, play dates etc have been far more fun anyway.

Madcats · 07/08/2018 17:53

I used to be a tight-fisted mother that refused to take DD to anything other than Kids am movies. mobi.odeon.co.uk/kids/

At age 3, a child isn't going to worry if the film was released a few months ago.

Metoodear · 07/08/2018 17:55

Went to pictures today with my client I am a support worker their was 6 of us in the whole cinema

It’s August I was like Confused

Metoodear · 07/08/2018 17:56

Op do you have a theatre near you loads double up as a cinema it may be cheaper

mumeeee · 07/08/2018 17:57

We have a Vue and a Premier here both charge £4 for a standard adult or child a ticket.
There is also a Cineworld but I never go there now as they charge at least double the other cinemas

EduCated · 07/08/2018 17:57

Wish our Vue was £4.99 - was just under £15 a ticket for Mamma Mia on Saturday. Ok it was a Saturday night, but it wasn’t a brand new film!

I find it frustrating that the same chains are much cheaper in our nearest big city, presumably because there’s more competition.

Cantbelievethis123 · 07/08/2018 17:57

I took my 2 dcs to the odeon earlier and they wanted £29 for the 3 of us. What I did was buy a days travel insurance for £1 through compare the market and now I get 2 for 1 cinema tickets every Tuesday and Wednesday for a year :)

worriedupstairsneighbour · 07/08/2018 17:58

Wow, it's £5 for the Odeon in a few cities I've been to and also £4.99 for Vue and I'm in a big city

rubyjude · 07/08/2018 17:58

We buy the digital copy and just watch it on Amazon etc.

HowsAnnie25 · 07/08/2018 17:59

It is expensive but their overheads are ridiculously high. We try to go to our local independent one as much as we can. Their ticket prices are a little lower in price and we always buy drinks and/or sweets there as without the trade they'll close and it will be one less thing for the kids to do when they're old enough to go out alone. The prices you're quoting though are shocking!!

Mouseville65 · 07/08/2018 18:00

I went to ciniworld last week, 2 adults 2 children - only added 1 bag of popcorn and drinks as brought our own sweets £54!!! I couldn't believe it!
