To think teen girls get "nana" old before their time?

sadsac1 · 06/08/2018 21:21

I follow a few accounts on You Tube and Instagram- mainly for their foodie posts etc - but these girls are 18-21 mainly (the big bloggers) and act so differently to my and my friends at that age.

When I was that age, Saturday's were about shopping, maybe grabbing a McDonald's or something similarly unhealthy in town and most importantly getting dressed up and going out for a good dance and to be honest, drinks and snogging!

Most of these girls do video logs where their day is either the gym and then tea and cake followed by a night in watching a box set or reading with a green tea and some peanut butter before meditation before bed at ten.

Now before you flame me, I know this is healthier and great habits for later in life but I can't help but feel your young days are for letting your hair down a bit...but then I think social
Media is their social life so that's probably something to do with it...

My eldest (22) is the kind of person you are talking about, shes actually a makeup artist but for about a year has started to make some money from youtube as well. I think her average viewer is 14 so she has a responsability to set a good example, her videos would also be demonitised by youtube and she would struggle getting brands to work with her if she showed anything irresponsable or inappropriate.
Being a 'youtuber' is a job now so I guess they have to be proffesional when they are at work (on camera).
DD hasnt had a drink for 4 years, goes to the gym 3 times a week and has a healthy vegan diet but she definately still has fun and lets her hair down, she just doesnt find drinking alcohol and eating crap fun.

JaneJeffer · 06/08/2018 21:58

I know what you mean sadsac

Seasawride · 06/08/2018 22:00

God I am 50s and have more fun. I plan to wear purple and spit! Fuck green tea and knitting. Smile

Echobelly · 06/08/2018 22:00

When I see 'the kids' at my gym working out with their mates, I admire it honestly. £24 wouldn't buy you much of a night out or many drinks - £24 also gets your Puregym membership each month and hours of workout time with your mates. I think they get a much better deal!

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 06/08/2018 22:01

You do know that vlogging isn't real life dont you?

And WTAF is 'nana old'? Other than ageist bollocks.

haribosmarties · 06/08/2018 22:02

this is getting a bit 'Four Yorkshiremen' but back in my day it was tracksuit hoodie and sharing warm corner shop cider in a massive plastic bottle sat in the bushes at the park....

Teens today are all immaculate and look like they work in the City.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 06/08/2018 22:03

But these blogs are all lies

It's like advertising, all lies and the product they sell is themselves

BlueBug45 · 06/08/2018 22:03

OP those on their late teens/early 20s do go to parties and go out to clubs but they just don't get as drunk as we did anymore. Some take drugs while others simply don't bother. They simply like spending their money on other things and see getting shitfaced as a waste of money, especially if they are students with loans.

sadsac1 · 06/08/2018 22:04

I do understand creating context, brand influencers and how being a you tube vlogger is a job. Those big names can't be seen knocking back the booze of course! Too many young impressionable followers!

I also learnt a lot at uni, made wonderful life long lasting friendships and developed independence and character. I also got shit faced more now than then. My friends done the same. They are now responsible mothers, solicitors, police officers, managers and living pretty happy lives.

My original point is that I think young people think it's cool to knit and drink tea and bake, where once it was seen as cool to go out drinking and snog someone and eat a burger at the end of the night. Each to their own, but they DO do this because they think it's cool
And instagrammable.

My mum always says enjoy your youth because you're a long time old..

JaneJeffer · 06/08/2018 22:08

It must cost a fortune being photo ready all the time. I only have boys but their hair has to be done every few weeks to keep it looking right and then there's the gym.

huggybear · 06/08/2018 22:09

Why do you consider going out and partying more fun than staying in with a boxset? Different people enjoy different things...

Seasawride · 06/08/2018 22:11

BlueBug

Of course some do and some don’t!

Teenagers are the same as they ever were.

Some drink loads some don’t, some drug some dont!

There’s nothing different about teens today. I have 6..

This is a total myth. Just like internet fake bollocks

corythatwas · 06/08/2018 22:13

I had a whale of a time at uni, but there is no way I would have had photos of myself in my more relaxed moments plastered all over permanent noticeboards for future employers to see, had the opportunity been available. I would just have gone on partying and made bloody sure nobody put pictures up anywhere where I had no control over who got to see them. Which seems pretty much what today's teens are doing.

My own dd is at drama school; they have special classes in managing their social accounts so as not to damage their careers.

EstuaryBird · 06/08/2018 22:13

God I am 50s and have more fun. I plan to wear purple and spit! Fuck green tea and knitting.

I'm with you, seesawride! I'm 63 (yes, I know I should be on Gransnet but this is more fun) and love my 'metalhead' lifestyle, lots of friends, lots of gigs and Festivals and lots of cider!

Armchairanarchist · 06/08/2018 22:25

My eldest is 22 and doesn't drink. The thought of going to some sweaty club amongst drunks is his worst nightmare. He loves clothes, his car and is saving for a deposit to buy a house. He works hard and sees alcohol, cigarettes and drugs as a complete waste of money.

Jozxyqk · 06/08/2018 22:27

How does it affect you? You seem to be taking it quite personally.

nellierose · 06/08/2018 22:28

It's true that the young can't do drunk stupid shit anymore without it being instantly pictures and/or videoed then sent around the next day, often on public platforms. You see videos on FB and think how 15 years ago those events would have been nothing more than a hazy embarrassing memory the next morning

LucilleBluth · 06/08/2018 22:29

I agree op......there's a kind of humourlessness to that generation. I blame the state of the world and social media. Being young, making mistakes, being reckless etc is character forming. I'm so so so glad that I had my teenage years and early adulthood in the 90s.

I'm currently listening to Radiohead with a huge glass of Rioja.

OlennasWimple · 06/08/2018 22:29

I miss the days of 50p vodka shots (with lime, because it was free, rather than Coke which cost another 50p Grin ) at the student bar

I guess once universities started charging large fees there became an inevitable onus on students to knuckle down and study rather than party (much like overseas students and mature students did back in't day)

KeepServingTheDrinks · 06/08/2018 22:31

To was going to say exactly what saidthesharktotheflyingfish said....

If you believe cloggers are RL, you are naive in the extreme.

You are generalising and pigeon-holing teens, which is patronising and stupid. You may as well make sweeping statements like "all boys..." Or "in the 1960s everyone..." Or "everybody in their twenties...." Ner. It's rubbish

And I also find your reference to "nana" ageist and insulting.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 06/08/2018 22:32

Sorry for typos. Damn predictive text

lubeybooby · 06/08/2018 22:36

It's a thing. They call them generation sensible - my DD is part of it, her and her bf are 22 and don't drink, never have.

I am not generalising but things don't become a social cliche for no reason - plenty do still go out but there is certainly a big rise in it being ok not to go out and do shots til 6am just to fit in

nothing wrong with it either

I believe it is down to the rise of anxiety, especially social anxiety, and the internet, videophones everywhere, not wanting to lose control and end up on youtube drunk with your skirt up round your knickers telling everyone you love them

sadsac1 · 06/08/2018 22:38

I'm not taking it personally. Honest. It's a topic of interest to me. I had my wild days, I'm all set Grin

Nana is a term lots of young people are taking on to describe themselves actually....it's used proudly.
So where is it derogatory?! Confused

Also, on a side note...although it's great the gym has become the focal point for a lot of young adults, it's to "grow a booty" and "make gains" rather than general health for the majority...it's today's version of looking model perfect....
