And it was agony, I could literally feel the pain travelling up my leg and I felt sick and dizzy and its still throbbing

Its easy to deal with.. clean with sea wster then immerse in water as hot as you can stand for about half an hour but OUCH. Luckily I had people with me who took care of DCs and it was me not them

If you are off to the beach get beach shoes you can also swim in... It could save lots of pain. Im buying me and children some first thing tomorrow.

how awful. Are you ok now?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/08/2018 22:40

youch! Shock you poor thing.

BabySharkDooDooDooDoo · 05/08/2018 22:42

Jesus that sounds agony Sad

AndreaPorkin81 · 05/08/2018 22:43

Didn't even know what they were till I read this! They look nasty.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 05/08/2018 22:45

My DS had this a couple of years ago, he was in so much pain, luckily we were near a cafe which gave us a tub of hot water and it did go off eventually. Hope you're ok now.

Bunnybobtails · 05/08/2018 22:46

I used to have jelly shoes for the sea back in the 80s because of weaver fish (lots off the south coast then). Poor you, hope the pain eases soon Flowers

FaFoutis · 05/08/2018 22:47

That happened to me last year. It is agony but the hot water really helps. I was OK within a few days.
I still don't bother with the shoes, one weever fish in my 40 odd years suggests it's unlikely to happen again. I don't go near that bit of beach though.
Hope you feel better soon.

MsJudgemental · 05/08/2018 22:51

Touched one once accidentally- hand swelled up like a balloon and had to have a tetanus injection. Agonising.

FaFoutis · 05/08/2018 22:55

I found it interesting. We don't really have many experiences like that from our wildlife in the UK.
Also, thanks to the weever fish I actually got a rest on holiday for once.

Topseyt · 05/08/2018 22:56

I had this happen when I was a child, about ten years old. It was on holiday in Wales.

It was extremely painful. We didn't know what it was and it scared me and my parents so much that they took me to A & E.

That was over 40 years ago now and I still remember it as if it was yesterday.

listsandbudgets · 05/08/2018 22:56

Thanks Yes certainly painful.

I feel similar to you actually Fafotis. First one in 42 years. However if I dont wear the shoes the children wont and Id prefer to save them the pain now I know theyre about.

FaFoutis · 05/08/2018 22:58

That's true. I wouldn't like the children to go through it.
Where was your weever fish lists? Mine was north Cornwall.

Tallace · 05/08/2018 23:04

This happened to my son last year on holiday on the south coast.

Like a PP a cafe owner gave us some hot water to soak his foot in and it did ease the pain after about half an hour.

OrangeSamphire · 05/08/2018 23:05

You definitely need weever shoes at this time of year. Especially around Cornish coasts at low tide. We generally wear them from May to Sept.

listsandbudgets · 05/08/2018 23:06

South Devon... I felt so pathetic as I limped off weeping to the nearest cafe to beg for a bucket of hot water...

worridmum · 05/08/2018 23:08

They also live in the River Dee on the Wirral i found out this the hard way when i went paddling in the rock pools there.....

Devilishpyjamas · 05/08/2018 23:09

Bigbury/Banthsm lifeguards always have hot water available for those weever fished.

I don’t wear wetsuit boots (unless it’s bloody cold) but stamping in the shallows helps avoid being weever fished.

FaFoutis · 05/08/2018 23:09

Oh no, I'm getting less blasé now.

Nagaram · 05/08/2018 23:10

I had 2 next to each other. It was so painful. My foot only stopped hurting after 24 hours. I read of one fisherman who chopped his hand off rather than deal with the pain. Briefly considered chopping my foot off.....

Screaminginsidemeagain · 05/08/2018 23:11

Omg I feel your pain- they really really hurt.

Stood on one as a teenager- my young nephew was with me an I heroically managed not to swear until he ran down the beach yelling - ‘she’s going to die!’

It hurt for ages!!

AdventuresRUs · 05/08/2018 23:13

We're often on the beaches on the south coast. Definitely make sure kids have "water shoes" on.

busyboysmum · 05/08/2018 23:16

I stood on one when I was a teenager in Spain and it was agonisingly painful. So I feel your pain OP and I always tell my children to wear shoes in the water for this exact reason. There are loads of weever fish around at the moment.

thereinmadnesslies · 05/08/2018 23:22

I did this at watergate bay in north cornwall last year. Really hurt

SilageMarner · 05/08/2018 23:23

Oh you poor thing. I know two people who’ve done that and both say it was the most painful thing they’ve ever done. And one has given birth four times!

Hope you’re feeling better and have wine/chocolate/whatever you’re into
