To not accept that there is 'period poverty' in the UK.....?

rosetree7 · 05/08/2018 20:27

Fully expecting to be told I am BU, but I genuinely do not get this 'period poverty' malarkey.

Some reports say periods cost £42-45 a month (£500 a year.) Never in my life have I - or anyone else I know - spent £42-45 a MONTH on their period. Not even a tenth of that actually.

Some of the things they (supposedly) spend money on are tampons and STs (obviously...) You can get a pack of sanitary towels for less than a pound. Less than 50p in some shops!

And also mooncups.

Although mooncups cost £16 to £22, most mooncups will last 10 years, so you'd only buy 3 or 4 in your lifetime!!! And they also spend on pain relief - but paracetamol and ibuprofen are 16 to 26p a packet from Wilkos. And plenty of other shops sell them for a similar price!

Oh and apparently, they have to keep spending money on new underwear every month. What a load of shit.. I have bought 18 pairs of underpants in 5 years, (at a cost of around £25 for the entire 5 years!) 5 pairs of them are dark coloured - and I wear them for my periods. Never in my life have I bought new underpants for every new period.

So what is this all about? And how on earth are they coming up with such a ludicrous figure as £42-45 a month?! Confused I mean, some girls are apparently using toilet roll as they 'can't afford' sanitary towels? In most cases, toilet roll is more expensive than sanitary towels FGS!

YeTalkShiteHen please don’t worry, it’s all good 😊 I just sometimes lack a filter, and speak/type before I think! I genuinely believe that the only way I’ll allow what’s happened to me to beat me is if I bury it in shame. Then he (the perpetrator) has won. If I keep speaking out about it, then he never wins. I have nothing to be ashamed of, I didn’t do anything wrong xxx honestly, please don’t stress 😊😊😊

I can not believe how vitriolic people are being about an issue that is widely know to be happening in the UK and worldwide right now.
I understand that people may find it hard to understand how someone could spend over £40 on their period in one month but those costs soon mount up. At £3-5 per box of tampax, and I need three boxes per period in three different absorbancies, at least two packs of night pads at around £3 each, feminax ultra x2 (it’s all that works) at £4.99 per box that’s already £31. Per month. That’s a lot of money.
Judging people who are in poverty in my opinion means that you are the lowest of the low. It doesn’t matter one jot how girls found themselves in this situation, all that matters is that there are people out there in the position to help them and provide them with what they need. The Red Box Project is a fine example of this, and some of the people here commenting their vile thoughts should consider donating to them, it might make a change for you to contribute to something positive in the world.

For those of you who like the original poster don’t believe in period poverty, look around. Look at the massive campaigns sanpro companies are creating to ensure girls have what they need. And read this research, might be eye opening. plan-uk.org/media-centre/plan-international-uks-research-on-period-poverty-and-stigma

To be honest, having now done a bit of research on old SavvySaver, am just embarrassed I got hooked in so easily 🤨🤨 Whoever it is is clearly a thundering fucking lunatic 😳

PortiaCastis · 07/08/2018 21:19

The other thread's just been deleted

RebelRogue · 07/08/2018 21:22

@SavvySaver24 did you seriously went there?

Fucks sake, can't believe that a discussion about women and girls missing out, suffering from poverty etc can "start" such vitriolic responses.

We've reached a new low.

Nebularin · 07/08/2018 21:23

Her nasty post has gone!

PortiaCastis · 07/08/2018 21:25

Good, it was revolting

Willow2017 · 07/08/2018 21:28

You do understand that businesses fail because of lots of factors

You do understand peoples circumstances change through no fault of thier own and leave them up shit creek without a paddle don't you?

Oh obviously not one rule for you and one for the rest of us it seems.

BishopBrennansArse · 07/08/2018 21:28

Thundering fucking lunatic 😂

BishopBrennansArse · 07/08/2018 21:31

Willow, no. She's somehow different her bankruptcy excusing her financial commitments and therefore causing financial hardship to others in the process makes her superior to those on zero hour contracts, being screwed by the government or employers not prepared to pay a living wage.

Willow2017 · 07/08/2018 21:33

As other posters have reasonably pointed out, a moon cup lasts indefinitely
You seriously want a pre teen to use a mooncup?
Never mind wash it out in open toilets at school?
If her family cant supply san pro do you suppose they will buy her a mooncup?

PortiaCastis · 07/08/2018 21:36

Grin Grin love thundering fucking lunatic that made me laugh which is a good job really as the aforementioned was making me cross with it's vile mutterings

Atthebottomofthesea · 07/08/2018 21:36

I am guessing the deleted post had something to do with my post. I am truly sorry to those who were hurt by the response.

Willow2017 · 07/08/2018 21:49

Bishop
I agree her business going bust will make little difference if she goes bankrupt. Right off the debts and the employees are left up the creek hopefull budgeting furiously with a magic wand until any new job/help from benefits eventually comes along. Silly sods should have no doubt have 'budgeted' for losing thier jobs.

YeTalkShiteHen · 07/08/2018 22:16

thundering fucking lunatic

Ahahahaha!

PlainVanilla · 07/08/2018 22:22

Why is this suddenly an issue?
Who is interested?
Companies wanting to make money.
I think the emphasis on girls/women is distasteful and demeaning.

Dottierichardson · 07/08/2018 22:24

PlainVanilla OMFG read through the thread and then you might find out!

RebelRogue · 07/08/2018 22:28

@PlainVanilla going through periods without adequate supplies is what's demeaning.

PortiaCastis · 07/08/2018 22:31

Plain Vanilla bleeding on a school uniform in the classroom in front of the boys and teacher is demeaning

YeTalkShiteHen · 07/08/2018 22:32

I despair of some people.

PerspicaciaTick · 07/08/2018 22:33

I think the emphasis on girls/women is distasteful and demeaning

Yeah, period poverty should be more inclusive of men Hmm.

Frequency · 07/08/2018 22:35

I don't think it is a new issue and what products are they going to sell? Women need sanpro whether they buy it or it's bought for them and donated to charity. The sanpro companies are hardly going to notice a massive hike in sales unless, of course, thousands of women and girls are going without adequate sanpro...

It's become more of an issue because the gap between the haves and the have nots is bigger than ever and more people are being pushed into poverty via underemployment, zero hours contracts, universal credit, the tax credits freeze.

Life is getting harder for the people at the bottom, and for once, thank God, they're not taking it quietly.

cathf · 07/08/2018 22:58

I don't know whether to be amused or annoyed at the assumptions made about me and my situation on this thread. You haven't got a clue.
Keep my assets? I wish.

BishopBrennansArse · 07/08/2018 23:00

Now you know how some of us feel with your 'just budget' ignorance then don't you?

Pissedoffdotcom · 07/08/2018 23:01

Still missing the irony then cathf...
