Previous owners have left this statue behind in our garden. I have absolutely no idea what or who it represents. There is a winged angel on his hat (the hat has a lion’s face) and is that Pan in the middle of his chest?

A quick google suggests that it might be Pallas Athena, the Greek equivalent of Minerva. There's a painting by Rembrandt that shows her wearing a very similar helmet.

She is often depicted with a serpent or a cloak trimmed with a serpent, to represent her helping Perseus to defeat the gorgon Medusa.

AjasLipstick · 05/08/2018 14:48

It has a serpent's body yes? No legs?

PanPanPanPing · 05/08/2018 14:49

Just to add, the broken bit shows that it might be made from Plaster Of Paris (or something similar)?

AjasLipstick · 05/08/2018 14:49

There's talk of angels with serpent's bodies somewhere I've come across. Something to do with fallen angels.

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/08/2018 14:50

Isn't it Hermes/ Mercury the winged messenger of the gods? He's usually depicted with wings growing out of his helmet, rather than out of his shoulders, though surely full sized angel wings from his shoulders would give a better lift.

Googling Hermes statue gives lots of images of blokes with winged helmets, though none to match yours.

AjasLipstick · 05/08/2018 14:51

Are the second lot of pics of a different statue?

Racecardriver · 05/08/2018 14:54

Maybe it's just made up? Looks a bit Mars like but extra. Almost like some E saw a classical statie or Mars and thought why don't u make this as a garden ornament but add some random shit.

Racecardriver · 05/08/2018 14:56

The bit at the bottom looks a bit like a wreath more than a serpent. Oh wait, could it be a biblical figure, any lion stories in the bible?

50but17inside · 05/08/2018 14:59

I am in UK. Yes photos are of the same statue. The hat is not so much a helmet as a lion’s face. I have googled st George statues, Minerva, Pallas Athena - thank you for these suggestions but nothing That looks anything like this. I assumed it’s a man but who knows

In that case I think it's probably a mixture of styles/different cultures/history and was sold in local garden centres as a 'garden feature'!!!

50but17inside · 05/08/2018 15:29

Pan pan. I think that’s probably true Just seems very ‘dark’

OP posts:
PanPanPanPing · 05/08/2018 15:33

I don't blame you for wanting to find out who/what it is! But, unless you can find the manufacturer, I suspect it will be hard to pinpoint it?!

50but17inside · 05/08/2018 15:39

I haven’t even thought to look on the bottom. A made in China sticker maybe??? Am out at moment but will investigate on my return.

MsHomeSlice · 05/08/2018 15:41

winged lions are griffons if that helps any

Agastache · 05/08/2018 15:43

If you are in the UK, then why the fuck are you on mn and not in that pool?

Justgettothepoint · 05/08/2018 15:53

Going against the grain here but I like it. Would look fantastic in a bed surrounded by plants. Go on an antiques website and look maybe?

motherofmenaces · 05/08/2018 15:53

Alexander the Great had a lions head helmet... not sure I'm helping but it's really a lovely thing in a creepy sort of way Blush

50but17inside · 05/08/2018 16:05

Agastache I am prune like as have barely got out all day I promise!! Just had to dash to Sainsbury’s when teenage DC enquired as to dinner plans .... oops

Hercules? The nemean lion skin he wore as a cloak and the snakey bits could be the Lernaean Hydra. Athena was his half sister so she may have cracked it for some acknowledgement via his helmet. Any other bits we can't make out that might be the 12 labours of hercules? Apples horses, deer, boar, bull, birds and belt..

50but17inside · 05/08/2018 16:23

Well what do you know. We just tipped statue upside down and I notice a woman’s name and sirname engraved on the side of the statue. A quick google tells me she is a prize winning sculptor. I take it all back about garden centres. I have her contact details and am just emailing her now with a photo. How cool is this ???
