To think my daughter is an owl?

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 02:36

I have only had my daughter for 9 days, so we are both fairly new at this whole being a baby/parent thing.

However, I believe there is mounting evidence to suggest that my daughter is in fact an owl.

She is completely nocturnal. Still awake as I type this and staring at me with great big owl-like eyes.

She has long legs and big feet, with scratchy talons for toe nails.

She flaps her arms/wings constantly as if she is about to take off.

She has an insatiable appetite, although I have only tried her on milk so far, I think if I offered her a mouse she'd probably take that too.

Her poo looks as though she's eaten a ten gallon tub of bird seed. It's runny and wet and seedy. Seedy poo = bird. No?

She squawks. A lot.

However, she's fairly bald in the way of feathers. One would assume though that small owls don't have their feathers straight away and they are a bit pink and bald.

Also she doesn't really have a beak as such.

Her head doesn't turn nearly 360 degrees. Not that I've seen anyway.

I have attached a photo of her "perching".

I must get back to the child/owlet now.

(Awaits confirmation of owl baby status...)

Yup, looks and sounds like an owl to me OP! You've lucked out, very rare recessive gene the owl baby gene, and even when such owlets are born to humans they rarely look so pretty in pink. Enjoy your fabulous owl-child!

bonnyblithe · 05/08/2018 02:56

Omg. I am in love with this featherless owl

planetclom · 05/08/2018 02:56

Yup
With you and you have got this.
I found my humour got me through and I in fact like the feeling of never being quite awake or asleep.
Congrats x

You have a beautiful little owlet. I used to have one but now thirteen years later she has morphed into a preening, brightly painted parrot! Do you also have a lovely greyhound in your menagerie?

Ifeelinclined · 05/08/2018 02:59

What a beautiful little owlet!

Movablefeast · 05/08/2018 03:02

Try and keep your owl in semi-darkness at night and bright light during the day, start to set her body clock to recognize night and day and turn her into a "Morning Lark" for those delightful 5am wake times.

Sitting in a bright room at night will keep her an owl for longer if you so desire Wine

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/08/2018 03:02

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I just want to eat her all up. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr serious case of cute aggression.
My dd also looked like a baby bird when she was born. Grin
Congratulations on your baby owl. She's a peach. i bet you can't stop kissing her, can you..

NotBadConsidering · 05/08/2018 03:07

Tie a letter to Hogwarts to her leg and see what happens. You could be in for a lifetime of postage savings.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/08/2018 03:07

OMG. The way her little finger is sticking out. There should be a law against this level of cuteness. It's ridiculousGrin

Firsttimemum892 · 05/08/2018 03:09

Awwww so cute , I too had an owl haha

Perfecttwo · 05/08/2018 03:18

He he! She does look like a baby owl. She is super cute though!
Maybe if you offered her a mouse she might sleep! 😉

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 05:19

@Ameri

That lurking monster is a Czech wolfdog, fierce protector of the owlet. He like to sniff her head to make sure she's safe.

The fierce protector is also guardian of the biscuit tin and is terrified of pretty much everything. Apart from the owl. She must smell good...

@Awwlookatmybabyspider

no, I can't stop! She's so squishy and adorable, it completely makes up for the nocturnal behaviour GrinGrinGrin

(Dopey Czech wolf for reference)

Thanks @Movablefeast - we are just experiencing a delightful 5am wake up now.

I think this is actually my favourite wake up time as it's not pitch black outside.

She also seems to feed better at this time of day and falls asleep fairly quickly after feeding.

Just about to creep back upstairs with her and put her in her nest...

Oh the cuteness!!
I call Ds2 my little owl (He's 12 now) because he's always had a funny hairline at the front So his hair fans out like feathers and when he was a baby his eyes were huge.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/08/2018 05:49

Ahhhh bless. She’s so teeny tiny! Congratulations. Smile

This post made me think of dd. Before she could talk at maybe around 12 months, she used to make a “ooooo” sound, which sounded a lot like the twit twooooo of an owl when she wanted me to pick her up. Happy days. 😍

SnugglySnerd · 05/08/2018 05:53

She's beautiful! I'm up with my sky larks at the moment. We made it to 5 30 this morning, practically a lie-in! Enjoy your little owlet.

Ameri · 05/08/2018 05:59

Wolf dog is lovely (and looks nothing like a greyhound in these pictures Grin) Owlet will have great fun playing with him when she is older.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/08/2018 06:03

Definitely an owl. I have one too. Mine is now 35 and very, very wise. What a lovely thread OP!

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 06:08

Having thought about this further it's actually no surprise that DD is an owl.

I have what DH describes as "monkey feet" I.e all my toes are mobile and I can pick things up with my feet. Very much like an owl...

DH does have a massive beak, so he too could be part owl.

Two half owls = one full on Owlet.

Mystery solved!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 05/08/2018 06:13

I'm quite glad DD's away at the moment, at I've been blessed with a lark and an owl. Not too bad in termtime, because I wake the owl up, so she's in bed by 9.30, but during the holidays I have one up at 5 and the other awake until 11. I'm losing about an hour's sleep a night. I'll catch up over this week. Noisy parties notwithstanding.

bluemascara · 05/08/2018 06:21

Definitely an owl. 🦉
But a very flipping cute one!
I'd keep her if I were you 😍

SecretWitch · 05/08/2018 06:23

You have a darling owl! I had a bat. Often found upside down in cot, with wings outstretched. She possessed night vision and long grabby toes. (Sighs) That was twenty years ago and pup now has batcage of her very own.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 05/08/2018 06:29

Morning owlet! I entirely concur with your diagnosis of owl. This child is clearly one of the rare species.
