To think my daughter is an owl?

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 02:36

I have only had my daughter for 9 days, so we are both fairly new at this whole being a baby/parent thing.

However, I believe there is mounting evidence to suggest that my daughter is in fact an owl.

She is completely nocturnal. Still awake as I type this and staring at me with great big owl-like eyes.

She has long legs and big feet, with scratchy talons for toe nails.

She flaps her arms/wings constantly as if she is about to take off.

She has an insatiable appetite, although I have only tried her on milk so far, I think if I offered her a mouse she'd probably take that too.

Her poo looks as though she's eaten a ten gallon tub of bird seed. It's runny and wet and seedy. Seedy poo = bird. No?

She squawks. A lot.

However, she's fairly bald in the way of feathers. One would assume though that small owls don't have their feathers straight away and they are a bit pink and bald.

Also she doesn't really have a beak as such.

Her head doesn't turn nearly 360 degrees. Not that I've seen anyway.

I have attached a photo of her "perching".

I must get back to the child/owlet now.

(Awaits confirmation of owl baby status...)

Too cute!

FrozenMargarita17 · 05/08/2018 07:24

Oh, do keep the owlet and let us know how she grows! What a sweet little thing.

Rowgtfc72 · 05/08/2018 08:37

What a lovely owl!

I had a monkey. She was born at 37 weeks so had very hairy ears and hairs down her back. I even looked for a tail. Turned out she was a sloth. Slept twelve hours from 2 weeks and not very entertaining!

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 09:07

@bluemascara I think I will keep her. She's just too adorable not to! Grin

@Rowgtfc72 this little one was similarly born at 37+1. Hairy arms but no hairy back. Conclusive evidence of owl baby 🕵🏻‍♀️

@SecretWitch your bat baby sounds adorable Grin
This one tends to stay the right way up, will have to see how that develops!

@Ameri - no, he's not quite a greyhound is he Wink he's about the same size and about as lazy but that's as far as it goes I think!

What a very beautiful owl she is too!
I suggest contacting the international bird if prey centre in Gloucestershire ( amazing place) as they will advise you on training techniques.
Seriously though she is beautiful. Congratulations. Smile

JellyBears · 05/08/2018 09:18

Aww she’s so sweet.

GetThisBabyOut · 05/08/2018 09:27

Ahh what a beautiful little owlet 😂😍

I am eager to see what I can birth in the coming weeks. Given the current rolling and wiggling, my money is on a large freshwater fish - possibly a tench?

WineAndTiramisu · 05/08/2018 09:29

Very cute owl!

WineAndTiramisu · 05/08/2018 09:30

And even cuter wolf dog! Are they easier to train than a husky? (My huskies refuse to be trained!)

DippyDiplodocus · 05/08/2018 09:38

@WineAndTiramisu absolutely not 😂 he's a total moron, not much sense, don't even think he possesses an attention span.

He's EXTREMELY food orientated - great you might think for training. The only problem being that he's so fixed on the food he cannot focus on anything else. He just stares at the food item until you either give it him or he does a random sit for no reason.

In his three years of life he has learned "sit", "paw" (that took a loooooooong time and he will only offer the left, never the right) and "chair" which is his version of "go to bed".

Thankfully because he's so moronic he's also a huge soft thing. His heart is in the right place, his brain not so much.

Just for context we do have three other dogs - all different breeds and they are perfectly trained and can do many nice tricks and have manners, so for that reason I am mostly inclined to believe that the wolf is just a bit backwards Smile

@GetThisBabyOut - good luck with that one! Are fish nocturnal?!

I know most don't have eyelids. You could be in for some very sleepless nights!

Her legs are so long Smile she is bloody adorable. I love Owls, she would look good perching on my mantlepiece.

DippyDiplodocus · 02/09/2018 07:47

Hello all,

I thought I would give an update on our baby owl as she is now FIVE WEEKS(!!!) where the bloody hell did that go?!

Our owlet is still super squishable and kissable, just a little bigger now. Appetite is still insatiable and her eyes seem to be even larger than before. She is very grabby at the moment, so we have started introducing her slowly to her natural habitat (see attached photo. You get lions in the forest, right?) 👀

It's so exciting watching her grow and change but I must admit I'd like to keep her small forever Halo
