Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

I know someone who pronounces the t in patio as a d. So the paddy-oh doors, sitting out on the paddy-oh Hmm. It really makes my brain scream!

May I throw in ‘mischievous’ which is pronounced ‘MIS-chevous’ and not ‘mis-CHEE-vious’? There is no ‘i’ after the ‘v’!

This is my Australian hell: "ashume" instead of "assume", also "preshume". I hear it on the TV, from newsreaders.

Aaarggh.

I am a pedant. However even though I know the spelling my DD complained that she was mercilessly ribbed by her uni friends for saying cutelry for cutlery. Oh dear Grin

People pronouncing the l in almond irritate me. I hadn't realised it was a regional thing, I thought it was just odd. I'll try not to be too judgemental about it in future!

My personal pet hatred is people saying garage as garridge. It sets my teeth on edge.

I wonder if "garridge" is a northern thing. It's how I say it. "Garaaaaaage" does my head in though "GARaage" does not.

The OED says all are OK.

Definitely GAR-age not Garaaaage!

Report
EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2018 04:21

Actually when I think about It garridge doesn't bother me if said by someone with, for example, a Liverpudlian accent. It's only really annoying when it's pronounced that way by someone with a southern (ish) accent.
I really need to stop over thinking this and get back to sleep!

If you say ARRRR-mond, you are wrong. Unless you are part of the crew of the fucking Marie Celeste.

There's a certain British YouTuber who is a chronic mispronunciation offender. Almond, croissant and many many more every day words are butchered on a regular basis.

She irritates me so much it's impossible not to watch. Blush

Croissant is frequently pronounced as croysant (croy as in Croydon, sant as in pant) in Melbourne. It's as if it's poncy to say it in the French fashion.Hmm

Never heard anyone say al-mond in my life. It's ahmond.

I’m intrigued as to what’s wrong with pronouncing it “bag et”?

Definitely ahmond

The one that irritates me is “ibuprofen

I say eye-byu-profen. Not sure if I'm correct, but someone I used to work with had a bad back and was always taking 'i-byoop-rofen'

Pissed me off so much.

There seems to be a recent aversion to the 'st' sound, so people add an h or three.
Shhhtupid shhhtudents.
I can't be the only one who has noticed this.
Also 'sicth' instead of 'sixth' - the x is replaces with a c sound. Apparently that is correct but makes no sense.

StealthPolarBear · 05/08/2018 09:02

And I'm sure when the film was out everyone talked about six-th sense. The new pronunciation seems very recent.

I've read this entire thread to see how @LadyOdd thinks baguette should be pronounced??? It's bag-et for everyone I know!

I'm on team ah-mund.

Also, mischievous - I say misCHEEvous, no extra i in there anywhere!
