to think there's no point buying summer clothes now?

I'll hold my hands up - I'm a pessimist. But I don't spend much money on clothes, and when I do it's always something I need to replace or cheap in the sale.

My sandals are breaking, but I'm reluctant to buy more as we're in August now - we only have another month or so of nice weather, and then it will be time for autumn fashions.

Is there any point replacing things like this, when I could just use the money to stock up on autumn necessities?

I’m in this predicament atm too, my 2 year old really could do with some more shorts but I’m thinking is there any point at this stage in the year when I can’t even reuse next summer as he’ll have gone up a size 🤔

Although you can wear your sandals next summer so I’d say get some new ones

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 04/08/2018 19:57

Can you get a cheap pair to see you through the next month?

SilverySurfer · 04/08/2018 19:58

If you buy now is there any reason why you can't wear them next year or do you you only wear what's in current fashion?

pandarific · 04/08/2018 20:00

Everything5pounds.com

Best thing ever op.

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 04/08/2018 20:02

Can't you wear them next year as well? Or do you dispose of everything at the end of the season.

Fiveletters · 04/08/2018 20:02

Everything5pounds is a great shout in this situation

JuniLoolaPalooza · 04/08/2018 20:03

I personally think it's going to stay scorching until the clocks change, so that's a good two months or so of daily wear of sandals.

This. And unless you're in Scotland, these days September weather is usually summery anyway.

5000KallaxHoles · 04/08/2018 20:05

My sandals are fucked but we're skint so I'm hanging on now - wanting a bargain in the end of season sales - but I'd buy summer clothes fine because I can just chuck a cardigan on over summer dresses and wear them into Autumn anyway.

Bluelady · 04/08/2018 20:09

Buy the sandals and wear them next year.

megletthesecond · 04/08/2018 20:12

Buy something half decent in the sale so they will last for next year?

Stopitjuststopit2018 · 04/08/2018 20:12

Re your son, you can pick up a shorts for about 3 pounds at Primark

DunesOfSand · 04/08/2018 20:14

On the shorts: if he's in nappies now, and likely to be out of nappies next summer, you may well find they still fit. Just buy them quite long now.

dollydelightful · 04/08/2018 20:22

Get sandals in the sales - they'll be half the price you'll pay if you wait until they're full price next year.

junebirthdaygirl · 04/08/2018 20:26

I love to get sandals in the end of season sales. Next year when the sun suddenly decides to shine you are all set to go instead of running around looking for nice sandals that are not too expensive. If l saw a nice everyday dress in sales l would buy it too.

FlorencesHunger · 04/08/2018 20:30

I would if I knew they'd last a few years wear. My croc sandals are as new and I've had them years and cost me about twenty pounds. This year bought some karrimor walking sandals for £20 out of sports direct and have worn them everyday since and imagine they will last years.

Think of long term investment rather than immediate.

AnnieOH1 · 04/08/2018 20:32

I would buy now for the simple reason that I can't stand cheap sandals, or rather they seem to hate my feet! I also remember last winter (with snow on the ground) having to wear my fitflops due to a burn on the top of my foot/bottom of my leg - thanks to the kettle dropping on my feet :( At least I had them to hand there and then =)

ForalltheSaints · 04/08/2018 20:50

You could buy a pair for use for several summers and not be a fashion victim, of course.

my2bundles · 04/08/2018 20:56

Agree with a previous poster. The lady who has a 2 year old needing shorts just get them, f he us in nappies then they will fit next year, or for the next 3 years in the case of my son because they lose the nappy bulk and tend to slim down around 3 and 4.

Sgtmajormummy · 04/08/2018 20:59

I think it makes perfect sense to buy something now. The shops will be getting their Autumn stock in soon, regardless of the current heatwave, so prices will go down soon.
If you get something you really like at a high price wash it overnight and wear it next day so you get the most benefit. Add a shrug or a light scarf in September, or wear a T-shirt under it.
Or do the cheap and cheerful 3 Primark tops and one bottom. £20 should be enough.

I also regularly buy Summer sandals for the following year and feel proud that I’m not rushing off to panic buy (premium priced) ones when I actually need them.

Summer clothes in charity shops often look sad and crushed, as if their owners have held onto them for years until the point of no hope (projecting), but you may find a beautiful bargain that you’ll wear for years to come.

Keep an open mind and maybe go on a few short trips rather than an “I have to find something TODAY” hellish 6 hours.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 04/08/2018 21:00

The shorts- does he have any trousers that are looking worn and too short at the leg?

If so, cut them off at the knee and you've got shorts.

trancepants · 04/08/2018 21:05

My 5, nearly 6 year old is wearing the size 12-18 month shorts he's worn for 6 summers now. He started wearing them at about 7-8mo as they fit nicely around his cloth nappy and they've just never stopped fitting. They aren't even a stretchy cloth, they are a combat style short with a very hardwearing material. It's weird because every year they still look the exact right size.

My sandals are fifteen years old. Do you chuck yours every year OP?

Echobelly · 04/08/2018 21:07

I'd get sandals because it's frustrating if summer starts early and you don't have any. I bought my last pair in the sale in late autumn and I was very glad I did so I had them ready for summer.

But you'd be lucky to find any now as everywhere's gone to autumn stock!
