Is food suddenly loads more expensive? Why?

Ok. Panicking if it continues.
Just been to the local shop for tinned tuna and couldnt get it below 2 pounds. Corned beef 2. 50.
These were once cheap options for sandwiches. Now i see them as protein to be saved for an evening meal, and for sandwiches to be made from paste, marmite, soft cheese etc.
I have noticed my usual bread rolls go from 90p to 1.10.
Milk stayed the same. Squash much more money.
Is it just me? Yes i could have gone to aldi and not the corner shop but even so.
I honestly dont see how places like tesco are going to stay open if this continues, nor how anyone could afford to fill a trolley for the weeks shop.
Is it just me or is food becoming too expensive? Thats before tv license, water, petrol getting dearer each year.
How are we supposed to manage when wages dont rise at the rate of inflation?

Funny how people always have the fuel to power an oven to cook pizza and chips but are never able to use a slow cooker or make an omelette.

Quite...

RedToothBrush · 03/08/2018 11:41

Ping.

Maybe we will go back to a much more basic diet with meat and dairy as expensive luxuries. But we will see childhood illnesses increase and disparity between the diets of rich and poor become even wider.

If people eat less meat and dairy, they will get healthier, surely? Meat and dairy are the worst things you can eat, even worse than sugar.

MrSpock · 03/08/2018 11:43

I think people just don’t know how to cook to be honest!

At the end of 2017 there were 79,000 families in temporary accommodation (B&Bs or hostels) so I can well believe there are a number of people with very limited access to cooking facilities. Crisis estimates this number will double by 2026.

cloudtree · 03/08/2018 11:46

...and 3 peppers have how many calories?...

Oh for goodness sake. Read the whole post. I am not saying that will sustain anyone. I am saying that if I don't have to buy a pack of peppers that is money that can be put towards something else. Likewise salad leaves which can be grown for next to nothing, spinach, spring onions etc etc.

MrSpock · 03/08/2018 11:48

Rocket leaves are really easy to grow! Used to have a window box and just pick them that day for a salad, it was great.

cloudtree · 03/08/2018 11:50

Of course there are people with no access to any cooking facilities whatsoever etc but aren't we talking in general terms about the majority here and how we can actually do something to help with the problem?

At the end of the day its simple. The prices will increase and there is not much we can do about that. So you have a choice. You either try to supplement what you can afford to buy (because it definitely is cheaper to grow certain things) or you don't (whether that is because you don't have the space or because you don't have the inclination)

Watch 'What the Health' on Netflix for starters.

MrSpock · 03/08/2018 11:56

No. You made a claim and you should be able to provide evidence for that.

An article or study would be nice, otherwise it looks like hyperbole and vegan propaganda

Buteo · 03/08/2018 11:59

Don’t think we’ll need to worry about the health impacts of dairy so much after Brexit:

At an event held today at the London School of Economics (LSE), pan-European dairy cooperative Arla Foods will warn that if the findings of a LSE report prove true, non-tariff barriers to trade and restricted access to labour after Brexit will leave British consumers facing a dairy dilemma which could see the availability of butter, yoghurts and cheese become restricted.

Meat prices will go up even more because this year, farmers have had to use their winter feed early due to the hot summer. And lots of farmers are struggling to sell on their cows for fattening at the next stage because of the high cost of feed.

serbska · 03/08/2018 12:00

@Buteo assuming 4 people in all of those families, plus another 5k rough sleepers... that's 0.5% of the UK population.

The same news reports say 120,000 children in temp accom. 18.9% of the uk population is < 16. So thats 1% of children

serbska · 03/08/2018 12:02

And this thread is for people using MN (on electronic equipment which costs £, using electricity that costs £) and are complaining about the cost of food... it isn't a fucking summit ton how to solve child poverty!

NameChanger22 · 03/08/2018 12:02

No. You made a claim and you should be able to provide evidence for that.

Sorry, are you the internet police? I stated my views. Believe them or don't. Do your own research, or don't. I don't care if you have the same views as me.

SleepFreeZone · 03/08/2018 12:04

I think food prices have been steadily increasing since the recession. I also think that we eat far too much.

Grace789 · 03/08/2018 12:04

The heatwave us going to fuck up the harvest so I expect a massive hike in prices in the autumn and winter

MrSpock · 03/08/2018 12:07

No, I’m just someone who knows how to structure debate and evidence claims. Hmm Don’t say something and then be unable to back it up.

I understand it has been a double whammey - they had to keep them inside for longer due to the wet spring (used more feed) and then the grass has been fucked by this heatwave (more feed)

Farming is a hard life.

Buteo · 03/08/2018 12:09

So less than half a child in each of your children's classes at school.

If only poverty were so evenly distributed across the U.K.

But you are having a fucking laugh to say that all poor people would love to cook rom scratch rather than eat shit food, if only they had a saucepan and a hop and 30p on the gas meter.

Who said that? I think the argument is more that it may be the only option to buy cheap but nutritionally poor food that can be microwaved for instance.

Good for you. If you are interested in this you can do your own research. I've given you a lead.

Buteo · 03/08/2018 12:11

Assuming that you have a £1 for the meter of course.

serbska · 03/08/2018 12:15

@Buteo you keep rubbishing every way that people have suggested to reduce food costs because not everyone can do them.

Fine. You can sit and hand wring about the minority of people who have super shit lives, maybe start a new thread about child poverty?

Meanwhile we can stay on here and swap tips on saving a few £ off their weekly shop in ways that many people can.

Buteo · 03/08/2018 12:22

serbska

you keep rubbishing every way that people have suggested to reduce food costs because not everyone can do them.

Bollocks. My first post on this thread was in support of a PP that pointed out people may not have cooking facilities, ie those in temporary accommodation.

Nowhere have I “rubbished” peoples efforts to minimise food bills. You have completely made that up.

And stop tagging me, it’s tiresome.
