Ok. Panicking if it continues.
Just been to the local shop for tinned tuna and couldnt get it below 2 pounds. Corned beef 2. 50.
These were once cheap options for sandwiches. Now i see them as protein to be saved for an evening meal, and for sandwiches to be made from paste, marmite, soft cheese etc.
I have noticed my usual bread rolls go from 90p to 1.10.
Milk stayed the same. Squash much more money.
Is it just me? Yes i could have gone to aldi and not the corner shop but even so.
I honestly dont see how places like tesco are going to stay open if this continues, nor how anyone could afford to fill a trolley for the weeks shop.
Is it just me or is food becoming too expensive? Thats before tv license, water, petrol getting dearer each year.
How are we supposed to manage when wages dont rise at the rate of inflation?

The government instructed the press to tell us the world will end when we leave the EU so people should stockpile food. Then prices go up.

Good way to get money being spent I suppose.

OftenHangry · 02/08/2018 13:13

Corner shops are often more expensive because they don't have the buying power big companies do.

Madbengalmum · 02/08/2018 13:15

£2 for a tin of tuna, you are going to the wrong shop, not even that in mands or waitrose!

GuntyMcGee · 02/08/2018 13:20

Unfortunately OP a few factors are at play with this: uncertainty over Brexit, people stockpiling food, so more short term demand, a vile winter and hot summer, drout in some areas mean farmers have had to use winter stores to keep crops and animals alive, which will have a knock on effect on food prices. It's only going to get more expensive. Which means we're going to have to be less wasteful and more creative.

longwayoff · 02/08/2018 13:23

Better find a £ shop asap

DesertIslandPenguin · 02/08/2018 13:25

Sainsbury's basics tuna chunks is 80p.

Price's tuna chunks (at Sainsbury's) is £1.75 and £1.49 at Asda.

Corner shops will always be more expensive than supermarkets. Get the mySupermarket app and shop around.

It was the coop...

Go in Jack Fultons and do as much shopping as poss then top up at the supermarket.
If you don't have Jacks a poundstore for tinned stuff.

Starlings27 · 02/08/2018 13:27

Just bought a four pack of tuna tins at M&S for £5.

Food is going up, though, definitely.

m0therofdragons · 02/08/2018 13:29

Tesco tuna is 95p or brand tuna is £3.50 for 4 tins Confused

Overall though, I've just done a big shop and was slightly taken aback when it came to £132. I looked down the receipt and there's no big expensive item just lots of little things. I assumed that was the difference for all the lunches for dc in the holidays. It's £20-30 more than my usual shop.

Starlings27 · 02/08/2018 13:29

Someone above mentioned the hot weather conditions - I'm expecting bread prices to rise as a result of poor grain harvests due to this summer. That's fair enough but what I find annoying is that the prices don't seem to come back down after a good harvest.

megletthesecond · 02/08/2018 13:32

It's been going up for a while.
Butter shortages and cocoa production problems are just a couple of reasons IIRC.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/08/2018 13:40

I think supermarkets are using brexit as an excuse to ramp their prices up to make more profit. Tesco's profits have increased constantly over the past year. Very naughty.

niketrainersarecomfy · 02/08/2018 13:43

Dragoms true i popped to tesco the other day for gluten free bread and bought a few other bits, it was 30 quid for 2 carrier bags
Looking the recieps nothing stood out either.

Yes it is.

The NFU have warned that due to poor harvest, food prices will rise again at the end of the year.

I believe that wheat harvest have been affected, as have onions, potatoes, peas, carrots and lettuce.

So a price rise in bread, is unsurprising.

Oh yes and Brexit.

frangdoodle · 02/08/2018 13:45

The pound is worth so much less now, because of Brexit.

Grumpbum123 · 02/08/2018 13:47

It’s toothpaste I’ve mainly noticed the price rocketing

RedToothBrush · 02/08/2018 13:48

BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT

Racecardriver · 02/08/2018 13:48

You can buy fresh meat for less than that in my local M&S. You are just shopping in the wrong places.

Millybingbong · 02/08/2018 13:50

Corned beef has been that price for a couple of years. I remember being gob smacked as I thought it should be cheap too

niketrainersarecomfy · 02/08/2018 13:50

So how will we manage post brexit financially? People will lose their homes, and food banks will see increased use.
How will i feed the kids?
I usually go to aldi but rises will affect there eventually.

vandrew4 · 02/08/2018 13:50

corned beef has been hugely expensive for years

LoveInTokyo · 02/08/2018 13:52

Unsurprising, since the pound is tanking and most food eaten in the UK is imported.

vandrew4 · 02/08/2018 13:53

The local co ops tend to be expensive as well

vandrew4 · 02/08/2018 13:54

is that £2 per single tin of tuna??!!
