Stingy Tooth Fairy

lemonslemonslemons · 02/08/2018 12:47

My daughter has her first wobbly tooth.

When I was a kid we had the stingiest tooth fairy that ever was. We got 5p a tooth. But it was ok, because it's what we were used to! That and porridge made with water for breakfast - it was the magic of the 5p that was so special.

I can't believe the lengths some parents go to nowadays. I heard recently that one mum gives £10 per tooth and writes a mini book and does fairy feet in icing sugar.

I don't have time for that. AIBU? £1 should suffice...right?

£1 coin for front teeth £2 coin for back teeth.

Allfednonedead · 02/08/2018 14:13

@NormaNameChange your DD sounds like a darling! Such a sweet thing to do.
For some reason, siblings looking after each other like that makes my heart melt.
OP, my DS just lost 3 teeth in 2 days. No way is the tooth fairy giving him £30! £1 a tooth and lucky to get it. (Seriously. I forgot both nights. Blush)

Thesearmsofmine · 02/08/2018 14:14

£5 for the first tooth here(because I knew there was a book he wanted to buy) and between 50p and £1 after depending what change I have.

Winterbella · 02/08/2018 14:22

NormaNameChange Thats so sweet.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 02/08/2018 14:22

£2 for the first tooth and £1 thereafter in our house. The tooth fairy leaves a letter or a certificate (rooftops printable) in an envelope along with the coin. The tooth fairy that comes to us is skint so can't give any more than that.

KurriKurri · 02/08/2018 14:23

I think I used to get 6d (shows age) fro the first one and 3d thereafter. My mum also used to tell me to tie a piece of cotton round my tooth tie the other end to the door knob and get one of my sisters to slam the door to make the tooth come out.

I am not in favour of every single event (or non event) being turned into a hoopla. £10, books and fairy feet are all barking mad. How is anything special and exciting when everything is made into a circus ?

Trialsmum · 02/08/2018 14:26

It’s a £2 coin here. Mind you last time I didn’t have a £2 so left 2 £1s and ds wriggled about so much he lost one of them ( he also wriggled about so much he’d lost the tooth before I got to it). He eventually found both the other £1 and the tooth so thought his luck was in 😂.

BiddyPop · 02/08/2018 14:33

We started at €1 per tooth, but the larger teeth coincided with DD being much older and aware of the value of money so the last few were all €2.

Absolutely no notes or anything else magical like that - I'm unimaginative like that. (Although, her stuffed toys have sometimes got up to mischief during December in the middle of the night - like setting up a storytime session, or having a tea party - we never quite went as far as a cotton wool ball snowball fight, and absolutely NO actual Elves, on shelves or otherwise).

FuckMePinkAndCallMeCedric · 02/08/2018 14:44

Mine get £2 coin for a tooth I think it’s just because they look the most interesting and and £2 seems a lot of money when you’re 6 or 7 or whatever. Probably not to those who get a tenner a tooth mind you Hmm Shock

Sunnysidegold · 02/08/2018 14:50

£1 a tooth here too. The tooth fairy only writes a note to remind them about excellent brushing and to cut down on sweets.

celticprincess · 04/08/2018 22:07

I’m from the 20p generation back in the 80s. Mine now get £2 for the first tooth and £1 for subsequent. I used to spend mine down the paper shop on a bag of pick n mix or a magazine. You really can’t buy much now unless you leave a £1. Used to be a trip to Poundland for the eldest but now they’re both losing them they get out in their money boxes and saved for more expensive things along with pocket money.

LouHotel · 04/08/2018 22:26

For my first tooth I got 2 pence coin, a new toothbrush and note to say that by not brushing my teeth before school I had made the tooth worth less.

I got a £1 the next time after becoming a teeth cleaning maniac.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/08/2018 22:37

The tooth fairy used to give me 20. She gave my DD £1 for her teeth and thought that was generous. Wink.
Putting all jokes aside for a minute. £10 per tooth. Shock. it's no wonder kids are entitled little blighters these days.

Witchend · 04/08/2018 22:40

50p in our house.
Never had a complaint.

villainousbroodmare · 04/08/2018 22:44

NormaNameChange I think your older kid is amazing Grin

Cachailleacha · 04/08/2018 22:45

£2 for the first, £1 thereafter, never did the fairy. Only up to 10 teeth at age 12.

Butterflycookie · 04/08/2018 22:51

I thought it was always £1 Confused

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 04/08/2018 23:00

Ds got £1 for his first. 10 years ago.
Then his dad was the fairy, so he got 2 shiny pennies. Yup. 2p.
Then 50p for the small ones and a pound for the bigger ones. I might give a fiver for the last one. If it ever comes out... he is 15!

He did get a note pinned to his door once. From tooth fairy. Sorry, I can't collect your tooth or give you a coin as I can't get across your floor. There is no space for me to land.
A couple of days later, he left an apology note for fairy and had tidied his room.

Dd has her first wobbler now.
Will probably give her £2 for it as it's her first. Pound each for the others.

StripyHorse · 04/08/2018 23:13

I got 20p in the 80s. DCs get £1... skilfully slipped under their pillow first thing in the morning as we suddenly remember. Oops! We have got away with it so far. I love the note about not being able to get the bed though - need to use that with DD2.

AmberNectarine · 05/08/2018 00:02

£2 here, but upped to £5 for teeth lost due to misadventure (all too frequent and not sure why the Tooth Fairy is incentivising this).

Acceptableinthe80ss · 05/08/2018 00:05

Mine had £1 or £2 per tooth.
I didn't want to give them more than that or they'd have knocked their adult teeth out too for an extra bit of cash 😂

Duffmcstockings · 05/08/2018 00:11

I think the first tooth was a fiver. Couldn’t be bothered to go to the shop and split it. Since then we have had £1, £2 and nothing of we forgetBlush sometimes the tooth fairy turns up after breakfast.

Donthugmeimscared · 05/08/2018 00:16

My three all get £1 a tooth is need a second job to do £10. My youngest did seem a bit miffed the day he got his pound in 10 and 5ps .

Cachailleacha · 05/08/2018 09:37

Do others pay secondary school aged children the same as younger children? Or stop paying for teeth? My 12 year old still has 10 teeth to lose.

NutElla5x · 05/08/2018 09:45

I don't remember the tooth fairy ever visiting me as a kid [ yes bring the violins] so I though I was being generous giving my kids a quid, which they were quite happy with. It's about the magic-or should be- not the amount of money they receive.
