To get a cat without a cat flap?

Never had a cat before but considering adopting one as the children are desperate for a pet.

I would want the cat to be able to go outside and don’t like the idea of a little tray.
How do you go about this...are they let out, similar to go a dog, last thing at night to wee and first thing in the morning? I’m clueless!
Would it be selfish of us, and hard work, to consider getting one without a cat flap? Thanks!

I've had 2 black and white neutered male cats - both lovely, affectionate, easy going cats! On average my family had 4 cats as I was growing up. I have come across 4 cats in my life, who were grumpy, aggressive and likely to attack everybody at the drop of a hat, except their favourite human:

  1. one black and white male
  2. one tortoiseshell female
  3. one tabby male and one tabby female

My brother rescued the tabby male, as a kitten from some teenagers, who were playing football with him and a sibling (who died). I don't know if this affected his view of people?

The other 20 or so cats of all colours and both sexes (neutered), were easy going, affectionate, etc - little balls of fluff!
