Wibu not to reverse

DannyDogg · 31/07/2018 20:03

Blue cars are parked, mine is the green car and the ‘trainee driving instructor’ is the red car. He yelled that no one has right of way when cars are parked and I should reverse all the way back as he had priority. I wasn’t wrong, was I? Arrow are just to show direction.

He reversed in the end but yelled something I didn’t catch but it ended in woman so I presume ‘silly’ or the like

But she wasn't approaching. This isn't a case of her arriving at an obstruction on the other side of the road, seeing a car already travelling towards her to pass them but going "I have right of way so I'm driving". She has no reason to allow him to pass.

She had right of way and she had a clear highway, so she drove. He arrived at the other end, did not have right of way and did not have a clear highway. He drove anyway. In the situation where one car doesn't pay attention and you end up facing off, then someone needs to reverse. And that someone should be the person closest to a gap. He was closest to the end so he should reverse.

Tistheseason17 · 31/07/2018 20:30

You state that he had not started to pass the parked cars.

Therefore, as you were already passing them, and had passed most of them) it was your right of way and not his.

It is somewhere in the highway code. He's snippy and wrong!

LeroyJenkins · 31/07/2018 20:31

trainee driving instructor obviously needs more frickin training!

NaomiNagata · 31/07/2018 20:31

Highway code - if your lane is blocked then you do not have right of way. If the opposite lane is blocked then you do have right of way. But you must give way if a car is already manouvering.

The male driver had neither the right of way nor the right to complete the manoeuvre as he started it when OP was already well on her way and he could clearly see no space to pass.

SadieHH · 31/07/2018 20:33

Your right of way and you were already passing so double bubble. He was totally wrong and a crap trainee driving instructor.

dementedpixie · 31/07/2018 20:33

You had right of way as your side of the road was clear. If he was already part way along past the parked cars on the wrong side of the road then you would have to give way to him. As he hadn't then you were right not to reverse.

rosy71 · 31/07/2018 20:33

You have right of way. The blockage is on his side so he needs to wait. You were also already driving past the parked cars. You can't possible reverse back along a road; what if someone was driving behind you???

AnnieAnoniMoose · 31/07/2018 20:36

He’s a plank. He needs a LOT more training. Idiot.

lovelovelovepancakes · 31/07/2018 20:36

Round my way a lot of people do what the red car has done and refuse to reverse (I'm assuming their cars didn't come with that gear) so I would either (depending on whether I need to get somewhere quick or if I have all the time in the world) I will turn the engine off and put my keys on the dash and wait until they finally find they have a reverse gear or I go up on the pavement enough to quickly go past. The first one is my favourite though (it also works really well but then I do drive a tank so they have no where to go if I won't move) op you were right Grin

InfiniteVariety · 31/07/2018 20:37

He is being ridiculous for 2 reasons:

  1. the row of parked cars are on his side of the road so you have right of way.
  2. you had almost entirely passed the row of parked cars so the only sensible thing would be for him to wait until you had finished doing so.
PrudenceDear · 31/07/2018 20:37

Almost identical to a situation I had this morning except I was going past cars parked on my side (so on wrong side of road). As I got past 5 a car came right up in front of me, screaming abuse, threatening and made me reverse back past 5 cars, following closely and continuing to hurl abuse at me. Left me very shaken

Mrsmadevans · 31/07/2018 20:38

Pure idiot take no notice Op

AnnieAnoniMoose · 31/07/2018 20:40

Clearly some people aren’t familiar with the Highway Code, let’s hope they aren’t drivers 😂

endofthelinefinally · 31/07/2018 20:40

It has reached the stage where everyone should have a dashcam. So many nasty, aggressive people around.

ThePrincipal · 31/07/2018 20:44

What rubbish driving instructor is he? You have right of way, it's his side that's blocked. Also, you are more already committed than him and he only has a short distance to reverse.

He should have seen you coming alongside the cars before you could have seen him, so he should have waited behind the blue cars.

QuietNinjaTardis · 31/07/2018 20:53

I had this earlier today. A road where cars in general will see there is not enough space for cars to squeeze past so will wait when cars are coming towards you then go ahead once there’s a gap. I stopped behind a car that was waiting and then followed him/her when he moved on. Oh no. Some silly bint obviously thought she was special and didn’t have to wait so squeezed past the car in Front of me, me and the car behind me.
I’ve also had someone who was behind me while I was waiting for it to become clear, move out and overtake my stationary car and then get stuck because there were several cars coming towards him. Some people are just dicks. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Gabilan · 31/07/2018 20:56

he was adamant that he was right and told me he would know as he was a trainee driving instructor

Was there evidence of this? Even if there were, IME off-duty driving instructors can be fucking awful drivers. And when they're teaching there are often large gaps in their knowledge. He's just a self-righteous wanker who didn't want to reverse.

brizzledrizzle · 31/07/2018 21:00

Were you expecting him to reverse around a bend?

Why not? They have to teach learners to do it so they should be able to do it with ease and if they can't, well they need to do it until they can.

GabsAlot · 31/07/2018 21:09

hes not going to pass then is he-in what world does he have right of way youre almost at the end

AveABanana · 31/07/2018 21:17

Ahh I am sick of people doing this. Tuck in! Tuck in! I've seen people try to face down the bus while they overtake parked cars on their side of the road. I've had people overtake me, while I'm waiting behind a line of parked cars in order to let the car coming the other way with right of way.

I can only assume they were taught to drive by the fuckwit driving instructor you encountered today.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/07/2018 21:21

someone did that to me too. I just put the hand brake on and waited. they reversed.

EggysMom · 31/07/2018 21:24

Any evidence he was actually a 'trainee driving instructor'?

Or was he just a twat who thought this would add weight to his bullyboy tactics?

DannyDogg · 31/07/2018 21:30

No evidence, just what he said, I told my dp when I got home and he did say he wouldn’t have done it to him - our other car is more of a big van and dp never has any problems

It's because you are a woman OP. Didn't you realise your ovaries have to give way to his Big Man Testicles?

We have a similar issue where I live although it can be 50/50 on going through. Often though idiots come through even though there is a line of cars coming down and they get all huffy about having to reverse. One time it was about 50/50 with me and a car coming towards me. I was fully prepared to reverse and went into reverse except a twat in a BMW came up behind me and refused to move so I couldn't either. Car in front had to reverse a long way so me and BMW drove through and the wanker man passenger in the reversing car gave me shit through his window. His wife or whoever it was was trying to stop him but he was very aggressively gesticulating and calling me a wanker. Not even my fault. Being a twat on the road should be reason enough to ban people from driving IMO.
