Neighbours overflowing bin - to complain?

FrauNeuer · 31/07/2018 09:46

Hi folks

Genuine question here.

Neighbours opposite have gone away on holiday and left their overflowing bin at the top of their driveway. There are no bags of rubbish on the street, but the bin lid is at a 45 degree angle because they have overfilled it.

Obviously I’m concerned about the potential for vermin, especially in this heatwave that we’re having. The bins are not due to be collected until Thursday.

Should I contact the Local Authority, or do you think they are unlikely to take any action?

I should also mention that I’ve reported these filthy people before for leaving bags of rubbish out. We frequently have to deal with debris blowing across from their side. If it was a one off, I’d be inclined to let it go, but I feel that they need a warning.

What would you do?

I bet the bin is full because they have rammed the empty box for their brand new extra large flat screen tv into it.

Who do they think they are not working, going on holidays, driving a car, doing DIY and now leaving their bin lid at a 45 degree angle. The bastards.

FrauNeuer · 31/07/2018 14:10

KatieMarieJ you’re right, I think this is an accumulative effect. Every 6 weeks or so, there is an issue with their household waste not being contained. It’s pushed me over the edge finally!

Leesa65 you see, i thought I was quite relaxed! Blush My Dad fastidiously swept up the leaves or snow outside our house in case someone slipped and fell (even though we lived in the middle of nowhere) and always said that losing control of your home was equivalent to losing control of one’s life. Shock I thought I was pretty laid back and most of the time feel as though I fit in pretty well. . . until threads about litter and noise come along on this forum! Blush

And your council tax will continue to rise if everyone rang the council when their neibours bin lid didn’t shut properly.
Btw council tax pays for a lot more than bin collection. In my brough only 10% of revenue is spent on waste. It would be a dam sight more if we all rang the council every time a bin was overflowing and that would take money from children’s services, oap services, disabled services and housing just a few items that are already underfunded.

FrauNeuer · 31/07/2018 14:11

What exactly is the problem? OMG it’s Groundhog Day again!!! The problem is that the litter is blowing onto my property.

FrauNeuer · 31/07/2018 14:17

Okay, thanks for the reasonable responses guys.

I’m not going to get into a ridiculous debate about how my desire not to be surrounded by household waste robs the elderly and vulnerable of care and resources.

For what it’s worth, I don’t understand the economics of not working but having holidays and vehicles, but that’s got nothing to do with the fact that they are awful neighbours with no consideration for anyone else.

I hope that everyone who has been unnecessarily rude will find something in their lives to be happy about.

Peace out.

FFS pull on your big girl pants and a pair of rubber gloves and GO AND PICK IT UP

FrauNeuer · 31/07/2018 14:30

Sorry BMW. As previously stated, I’m on maternity leave. I’m 8 months pregnant therefore will not be collecting up other people’s shit from the pavement.

I'm shocked that so many areas don't have special collections for nappies and medical waste. Ours has pink bags for this that get collected weekly. Recycling, dry and food, weekly and landfill fortnightly. It works well but I dread the collections changing to further apart.

Sisgal · 31/07/2018 14:34

Yes you are B U

chillpizza · 31/07/2018 14:44

Our bins very rarely shut close to bin day. We have fortnitely collections we recycle but both our recycling bins and large general bin are always full that’s without birthdays/Christmas or spring cleaning.

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 31/07/2018 14:51

@Davros that's really good!

I live in the Canterbury area and collections are meant to be fortnightly, but they regular don't turn up and it's left around 2.5/3 weeks. It's awful!

PuntCuffin · 31/07/2018 14:56

Is it actually 'shit' blowing onto your property? Or just a few bits of rubbish, which can quite safely be picked up? Phoning the council for a bit of blowing rubbish is ridiculously OTT.

So glad I live on a street where people have better things to do with their time than curtain twitch. We have had building work done and ended up with rubbish sitting around for way longer than 6 weeks Shock because our builder didn't clear it. Our neighbours felt sorry for us, rather than whining about it to the council.

And as for funding holidays etc. None of your business. Maybe they have private income. Or an inheritance. Or credit cards. Whatever. It simply isn't your business to judge their lifestyle and spending choices.

brizzledrizzle · 31/07/2018 15:14

Personally, I wouldn’t want other people’s waste in my bin but still, I do appreciate the idea.

Why? Unless they are chopping up bodies what is the problem with it?
Our neighbours put a bag in there on rubbish day, we don't have to touch their rubbish and the bin is emptied before we need to use it again.

Leesa65 · 31/07/2018 15:23

Just seen about not putting a bag or two in your own bin

OP, I have one waste bin (or black bin) and neighbour has two, so I am lucky in that they are willing to share the spare black bin.
It would solve the lid not closing on the neighbours bin issue if you did put a bag or two in your obviously not full bin.

Its being emptied day after tomorrow I saw somebody say anyway.

TheClitterati · 31/07/2018 15:45

We don't control our neighbours. Our neighbours don't control us.

Can you try squashing the lid down? Or take a bag and put it in your bin? That would at least solve your problem andvreally it is all you can do.

SilverySurfer · 31/07/2018 15:55

I would like to know how you know they don't work, OP? As a PP has already pointed out, a lot of people work from home these days, often at strange hours. Of course, that wouldn't fit in with your opinion of them being benefit scrounging, car owning/holidaying layabouts would it?

vandrew4 · 31/07/2018 16:04

Why do you not want someone else's rubbish in your bin? What do you think will happen?
Is your rubbish of a superior quality and you don't want it contaminated?

amawaster · 31/07/2018 16:51

I'm afraid I'd swear my head off before phoning you back to politely tell you I'd be doing nothing in this situation OP.

HaveSomeGrace · 31/07/2018 16:57

I’m a 30 something IT worker on maternity leave

Op you really need to chill out if this is the only thing going on in your life at 8mths pregnant. Sorry but you do sound far too invested in another persons business and the fact that you say this has been bothering you for a while is just crazy.

Take a chill pill 💊

PositivelyPERF · 31/07/2018 17:11

PositivelyPERF you still haven’t answered my question regarding the weeds... who do you expect will clear them if you don’t

The council clears weeds from the pavements here. Maybe you don’t live in as nice an area, as you think. Wink

YeTalkShiteHen · 31/07/2018 17:13

Fair point about weeds on the pavement actually! Council used to clear/spray them when we lived on a council estate, now we live on a private estate we pay factors to do it as part of the terms of ownership.

LakieLady · 31/07/2018 17:18

An angle of more than 30 degrees is surely a Police matter?

Grin Log it with 101.

PositivelyPERF · 31/07/2018 17:20

Don’t be silly, LakieLady Hmm

Definitely a 999 matter! Grin

LakieLady · 31/07/2018 17:43

I often pick up rubbish in the street. Our council doesn't provide bins, so a lot of people just put bags of rubbish outside, where the cats and foxes rip them open and the contents end up everywhere.

I thought this was quite a normal thing to do, but now wonder if IABU.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/07/2018 18:01

why don't you take some of it round to the tip?

What?!? Is that what you would do, seriously? I'd do the other things I advised you to do. If I were freaking out about a rodent problem, well, the Council may act but it won't be quick, the family can't act because they're away, so you're the only one left, aren't you?

You could do a stop gap of taking out enough to shut the lid to ensure it does get taken on Thursday, then put the surplus back in the bin after the collection.
