2 jobs, similar in nature

Job 1
New job offer
Full time over 5 days
Close to home (5 mins drive away)

Job 2
Existing job
Part time over 3 days
An hour on the train each way

Both jobs similarish in nature, exact same pay. So do you work full time for the same money that the pt one pays? Or does the train journeys outweigh only working 3 days per week???????????

Job 2

SneakyGremlins · 30/07/2018 18:19

I'd definitely pick job 2.

beachmamma · 30/07/2018 18:20

Which job has better prospects for your future ? Which do you think you'd enjoy more in the long run?

tuckingfypo · 30/07/2018 18:21

Job 2, the hour train journey would be downtime to read, listen to an audiobook or music and an extra 2 days off! No brainer!

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:21

I hate the train though which is why I applied for the other job

Assuming an 8 hr day, job 2 plus commuting =30 hrs, job 1 = 40 hrs.

If you don't mind job 2 I'd keep it. 3 longer days are definitely better than 5 slightly shorter ones.

I've gone from 4 days a week to 5 days and it's a tough change and that's with a pay bump, for the same money.... Sod that

DroningOn · 30/07/2018 18:24

I'd need to really, really hate the train journey to justify the change.

Think once the bubbles burst with job 1 (and it always does) you'd regret it.

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:25

I'm actually in job 2 atm full time 5 days per week .... have the option to go to 3 days for roughly the same money as job 1.
I'm happy enough but hate the travelling hence reducing my hours.
The lure of working so close to home is tempting me though for job 1

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/07/2018 18:26

I think I would put up with the train journey for two extra days off tbh.

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:28

Everyone seems to think job 2 then?
What would you do with 2 days off? I'm worried I'll be bored?

OP posts:
delphguelph · 30/07/2018 18:29

I'd suck up the train. Do you have to change lines or is it direct???

delphguelph · 30/07/2018 18:30

Bored????!!!

beachmamma · 30/07/2018 18:36

Bored !? 🤭

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:37

Yip bored. I know it sounds sad but i dont actually know what I'd do on those 2 days. No one is home in our house until about 4.30. All friends and family work. So I'm not sure what I'd do on those 2 days .
I am really sad aren't I Confused

😂 Bored! I wish I had the chance to be bored.

I agree with everyone, I would definitely pick job 2, OP.

Karigan198 · 30/07/2018 18:46

Job 2. 6 hours travelling still doesn’t add up to 2 days work.

Karigan198 · 30/07/2018 18:46

And get a hobby lol. I would love two more days to do what I want. I could fill them so easily

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:48

Well guys I'm on the train on the way home atm and I'm swaying toward job 1.

The other option of course is to suck it all up, stop moaning and stay ft in job 2. Moneys great. ..... but I really hate this travelling! If I took job 1 I could even go home for lunch!!! Or am I just romantiscing now Grin

How much does the train cost? Because in real terms you are being paid less if you add on the cost of the commute.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/07/2018 18:52

At different times I’d make a different choice. When the children were small I’d have chosen the extra 2 days off. Now they are older actually 5 days with a shorter commute would suit me better. I’d rather be home earlier in the evenings and they are out at school all day so need me less during the day.

SciFiFan2015 · 30/07/2018 18:53

Job 2 and a plan for the time you spend commuting. Book? Audio Book? A MOOC?

TaraCave · 30/07/2018 18:54

Looksbetterwithafilter that's exactly where I'm at in life. When kids were small those 2 days would have been priceless

OP posts:
ApolloandDaphne · 30/07/2018 18:57

It sounds like you would rather be busy every day but home earlier. Job1 suits your needs right now.

seeingdots · 30/07/2018 20:18

I would choose job 2. Not just for the 2 extra days at home but because I wouldn't want to reduce my actual salary and limit the chances of getting future jobs that pay as well or better than job 2 already pays.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/07/2018 22:20

Job2. Work days are workdays in my experience whether they last 9 hours or 12 one doesn't achieve much else. Read on the train, switch off and your short evening will be more restful.i find that I struggle with house work if I work everyday and have no time for anything other than chores even if eg I do a half day here or there... it's tiring to do long days but more productive over the week.
