Knocked on door quite loudly and ringed the bell. I was upstairs by the time i was at the top of the stairs he litterally opened the front door and left my package there . I know i should have locked but is it really normal to try and open the door ? I was really shocked by this.
He litterally didnt even wait 3 seconds

I lock it when I go out, so not sure what the premium would increase.

DameSquashalot · 30/07/2018 17:05

why

sparklefluff · 30/07/2018 17:11

My postie will go into my back garden and see if I've left the kitchen window open and pop it in for me.
Always very grateful he does!

Tbh, I have the same delivery drivers and postie for everything and speak to them all so I wouldn't be concerned personally, but appreciate my circumstances aren't the norm

strawberrybodybutter · 30/07/2018 17:11

Don't think YABU at all. I would expect anyone who knocked at door (bar friends and relatives) to wait for an answer, not just let themselves in! I'd be shocked if this happened and would complain. I was walking round my house in just my old and tatty underwear cus of the weather last week, I would have been livid if some random delivery person poked their head through the door!

Bramble71 · 30/07/2018 17:13

I think the drivers are under so much pressure from their employers, I'm not surprised they'll do anything to speed up the process. My hubby used to be a postman and he said it was like waking up the dead sometimes, trying to get them to answer the door. He used to get abuse all the time.

mydogmymate · 30/07/2018 17:21

This happened to me too last Christmas. I complained to amazon, but didn't hear anything back. Crap.

NotTheFordType · 30/07/2018 17:40

I think this is intrusive and I'd be annoyed if it happened to me. But we generally keep the door locked all day so if someone has attempted it, I don't know about it.

The time I worry is when I get up early to go to the gym, go out and lock the door behind me leaving my son sleeping upstairs. I worry if there was a fire he won't be able to find his keys.

MustBeThursday · 30/07/2018 17:48

The amazon delivery man came into my porch once. I hadn't realised (while wrestling the DC and the pram in) that I'd forgotten to lock it. Thing is I heard the knock and a noise I assumed was something coming through the letterbox and opened the inside door only to pretty much scream in the poor mans face as I'm such a jumpy person and I was expecting post on the doormat not a person!

‘Breaking and entering’
Hmm

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/07/2018 20:05

Since when did breaking and entering involve walking through an open door and leaving a parcel?!

DeadGood · 30/07/2018 20:10

I’m incredulous that people leave their doors unlocked. Why do you do it? What’s the benefit?

User1472333009 · 30/07/2018 20:18

I used to be a delivery driver & would do this on occasion if I'd been knocking for a while and no answer. The customer gets their parcel I get rid of a parcel, win, win.
Were under a lot of pressure from stupid management who don't understand roadworks, traffic & car breakdowns.

I don't see the problem?

firsttimemum889 · 30/07/2018 21:03

Ok so i probably used the wrong word :p intrusive instead of violated is more appropriate ( english is not
My first language) .
I usually lock the door but tbh i have been doing stupid things lately including putting my keys in the fridge (havent slept more than 3 hours straight since ds was born )
I just wouldnt expect for someone to try and open the door if am not answering

As for the many threats about this i honestly did not see one before and i was really suprised today by this action hence the thread .

Anyhoo i will try to remember to lock during the day since this is the new normal now :)

Lock your door Shock

Celebelly · 30/07/2018 21:20

I'd feel a bit weird about the front door, but our Hermes man comes round back and lets himself into garden and leaves parcels in garage, which is fine by me. If someone opens our front door they'll be greeted by a very friendly and excited spaniel! I'd just lock it in future. He probably thought he was doing you a favour.

InsulatedNotIsolated · 30/07/2018 21:21

What i find more strange is the number of people who leave their front doors open Shock, don't you all lock your front doors once you enter?

Member745520 · 30/07/2018 21:24

A bit off topic - once when I was expecting a parcel I had to go out for a couple of hours, and when I returned the lady from 3 doors down brought a parcel up to my house, saying the old boy from the house the other side of hers had hurried up the path to intercept the driver and take the parcel for me - he must have seen me leave the house and was well known for keeping his beady eye on everybody Hmm. A few minutes later he went round to the lady in some haste and told her the parcel wasn't for him after all, and asked her to take it in for me, which she thought a bit strange, but did.

What she didn't know and he had obviously twigged from the delivery information on the back, was that the parcel contained cremated human remains... the last time I'd spoken with the deceased he'd asked if I could arrange for his ashes to be scattered where his wife's had been some years before.

Even better, what our nosey neighbour didn't realise, was that the ashes he couldn't handle were those of someone he'd been a real PITA to when they worked together in the past. A bit of gentle karma perhaps?

Celebelly · 30/07/2018 21:31

Our door is always locked before we go to bed, but if I'm in the house during the day then it's sometimes unlocked. Same with back door as dog/cats are always being let in and out throughout the day (and sometimes the back door is just left open most of the day if it's nice weather). We do live in a village though!

Given the barking that ensues when anyone comes up our drive, I doubt anyone would want to just wander in ;)

Stupomax · 30/07/2018 22:09

My dog is also a very very effective doorbell.

AgentProvocateur · 30/07/2018 22:32

I never lock the door when I’m in the house. I would feel like I was imprisoned. And I have friends and family that often pop in. (And parcel delivery men!) If anyonecwsnts to steak my kettle or perhaps a mug from the kitchen, they’re welcome to it.

notacooldad · 30/07/2018 22:48

I'm surprised at people being surprised at front doors being unlocked in the daytime!
Not only is ours unlocked but openas well although the vestibule door is usually shut ( or the other way round)

Our postman and delivery men usually open the door and leave a parcel and just shout 'parcel for you!' And we shout back, " thanks!"

Perfectly normal for us!

Ebeneser · 30/07/2018 23:04

I think I’m glad I live where I do. I regularly forget to lock my door before going to bed, have left keys in the door on the outside a few times and one one occasion totally forgot to actually shut the front door at all. If I lived in a city I’d have been murdered in my sleep by now!
