Knocked on door quite loudly and ringed the bell. I was upstairs by the time i was at the top of the stairs he litterally opened the front door and left my package there . I know i should have locked but is it really normal to try and open the door ? I was really shocked by this.
He litterally didnt even wait 3 seconds

Why would a key dependant lock reduce your insurance premiums, when many people seem to choose them specifically so they can leave them unlocked?

Stupomax · 30/07/2018 16:09

Normal for rural Sweden

Normal for small-town America too. I don't know anyone who actually locks their front door here...

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/07/2018 16:10

Do you ever get any randoms wandering in?

Armchairanarchist · 30/07/2018 16:10

Normal where I live.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/07/2018 16:14

Yep, rural Wales and our lovely postman just pops parcels on the hall table because I won't hear the door from upstairs or up the garden

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 30/07/2018 16:14

Unless I am actually standing by the front door and open within 3 picoseconds of the Bell going, I find they will either bugger off sharpish or leave the parcel outside to be pinched 😬 I have no chance if I’m upstairs or, god forbid, in the loo 🤨

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 30/07/2018 16:18

Violated is a bit dramatic but I know what you mean 😁Grin

It does feel intrusive. I don't think it warrants a complaint but perhaps a bit of a telling off or close encounter with a dog if you catch him again.

PoisonousSmurf · 30/07/2018 16:18

We live down the road from one of 'Her Majesties' open prisons.
A self locking door is a must! They 'guests' do have a habit of going for a wander.
I always carry a spare key on me and have a keysafe.

Stupomax · 30/07/2018 16:19

No. Sorry to disappoint.

sourpatchkid · 30/07/2018 16:19

This happened to me - except DS was new born and I was "new mum both boobs out initiating breastfeeding" on the sofa directly opposite at the time. I'm still a little mad about it. It is intrusive- if I don't answer the door, don't come in - that's not a complex rule?

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/07/2018 16:20

Disappoint?

justathoughtnow · 30/07/2018 16:23

I'd just be glad to get my parcel. Such a pain in the arse to get it if they can't deliver. And yes, as PP said, it is because they get paid very little per parcel and have very tight delivery schedule.

Rhiannon13 · 30/07/2018 16:28

Mine does this sometimes and I'm grateful because it saves me having to collect the parcel from the post office (and saves him from having to faff around too). If I don't want him to, I lock the door. Simple really.

scolotti · 30/07/2018 16:32

@Nquartz yes I could lock my door. But I don't really expect strangers to open the door to my home. Especially not a delivery man.

scolotti · 30/07/2018 16:35

@RideOn my child knows to be careful when coming in as he knows the cat can run out. A stranger opening the door to drop a parcel in wouldn't be prepared for my massive cat farting out in the road

lightonthewater · 30/07/2018 16:37

yes, this has happened to me several times.

cloudyweewee · 30/07/2018 16:38

My cat never farts in the road.

scolotti · 30/07/2018 16:40

@cloudyweewee Grinto be fair he would also probably try to fart in the road

cloudyweewee · 30/07/2018 16:44

He's not a particularly flatulent cat which is just as well as he sticks his bum in my face to wake me up. At least the delivery man didn't do that.

specialsubject · 30/07/2018 16:46

we need these people, they are the easy meat for the burglars so the rest of us who actually lock unattended doors have a better chance.

part of adult 101 is not to walk through a door that locks without the key in your hand. And to have a spare with someone or in a keysafe if you are the type that is likely to do this.

delivery man is in a tearing hurry and can't wait for you.

Iama because they are more secure when locked, as I said. And people don’t buy them to Leave them unlocked when they are out... generally having people in will deter most opportunistic burglars. Ive just had a quote for a new front door. Wasn’t offered anything but 5 lever, and I wouldn’t want anything else.

cardibach · 30/07/2018 16:53

soecial are you serious about this?

How many burglars do you think hover around looking for doors which may be open and may have a stealable itemjust inside them and may not have a person or large dog immediately behind them when opened? The doors aren’t ‘unattended’. They are doors to occupied buildings.

TooManyPaws · 30/07/2018 16:55

Postie used to do this all the time at weekends before I had a new porch built with a large mail box. The dogs know the posties but they bark whenever someone is passing in the road. I never lock the doors when I'm in until nightfall but then I'm rural and no one is just passing. The six dogs can sound like the Hounds of Hell too.

NewYearNewMe18 · 30/07/2018 16:59

I dont know if i am being very dramatic but i felt a bit violated

Dramatic is an understatement

DameSquashalot · 30/07/2018 17:04

We've just moved into a flat with a door that needs a key to lock. I love it because you can't lock yourself out. I lock the door when I'm home so nobody can wonder in. The only thing that worries me is when DH comes home drunk and only puts the chain on. I could easily kick the door open (I think 😁)
