To think a coffee a day whilst breastfeeding is fine?

I keep getting mildly disapproving comments Hmm

FIL asks if I want a decaff when we go over. I say, oh thanks but I've not had a coffee yet today so might have a regular one. He will check a couple of times with raised eyebrows and last weekend said "right, so x is having tea, y is having decaff and Johnny is having regular coffee as she wants her babies to be up all night."

DM also keeps asking, whenever the twins have anything slightly out of the ordinary wrong or have a shit night, "Have you been drinking coffee?"

I am beginning to feel a bit persecuted Confused I have one cup a day, mostly instant at home but a couple of times a week a small or med size from a coffee shop.

I even tried giving up caffeine entirely for one week of hell but apart from making me a crabby witch it did nothing.

Please tell me it is normal to drink coffee when bf???!

It's fine, tell them to keep their noses out Wink

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/07/2018 11:27

Of course it's fine. Here's the NHS advice:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/breastfeeding-diet/#caffeine-and-breastfeeding

Up to 200mg of caffeine a day is fine, an instant coffee is about 100mg and a filter coffee 140mg. I'd print that NHS page out and show it to them next time they mentioned it!

HowIWishYouWereHere · 30/07/2018 11:28

It’s definitely fine.

Sarahrose21 · 30/07/2018 11:28

I live on full fat coffee and breastfeed, baby sleeps fairly well for a 6 month old sometimes even going through the night it doesn't seem to make any difference if I drink coffee or not
Tell them to keep their noses out

PinkHeart5914 · 30/07/2018 11:29

Yes it fine!

I have breastfed 3 dc and always had a couple of cups a coffee a day and shock horror even a few glasses of wine now and then!

Oysterbabe · 30/07/2018 11:29

I'm breastfeeding and get through a coffee or 5 during the day. It hasn't effected my milk production and my baby sleeps great. I don't think I could survive without it, I haven't had a good night's sleep since my eldest was born in December 2015.

mude · 30/07/2018 11:30

Same, I have one or two instant cups at home a day. Sometimes a cappuccino out. Baby sleeps fine

LaurieMarlow · 30/07/2018 11:46

Lordy, I'm on at least 3 cups a day. And not the instant kind, the real stuff. I'd be lost without it. DS is thriving.

I didn't even know people cut it out until i started watching The Letdown. Grin

Tell him to do one.

I'm still breastfeeding my toddler and pregnant and I drink a cup of coffee a day. Shocking.

MangoApplePear · 30/07/2018 11:50

Grrr this would annoy me so much!!

It is an old myth that you should avoid normal amounts of coffee when breastfeeding. Almost no food is off limits. Hardly any of it goes into your milk- almost none!!

I would get your facts together on this and respond with the information to shut him up.

Freezingheart · 30/07/2018 11:51

It’s absolutely fine. With my first I gave it all up and dc1 is a wired child. With dc2 I drank coffee throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Calmest baby ever. My conclusion is it makes no bloody difference. If anything I always think the chemicals in decaf are probably worse.

People should butt out! I used to have the same comments from someone who ran a singing class I took my baby/toddler to!!

MangoApplePear · 30/07/2018 11:55

This is an extract from the research paper I just posted:

“Because no caffeine has been detected in an infant's urine with maternal consumption of up to three cups of coffee a day, it is unlikely that infants experience measurable exposure to caffeine. However, if a mother consumes more caffeine in one day than is found in 5 cups of coffee (750 mL), caffeine could begin accumulating in an infant's system, causing symptoms of caffeine stimulation12).”

Ennirem · 30/07/2018 11:57

God, even when people don't actively scold you for breastfeeding at all they find a way to try and be domineering about it.

Coffee is fine. Babies don't sleep because that's what babies (by and large) do. Tell him he gets to complain when he's the one up all night with a child hanging off each nipple. And tell him when that day comes, you will smile sweetly and bring him a decaf coffee Grin

Ennirem · 30/07/2018 11:58

I am always slightly devilishly amused by the faint looks on people's faces when I feed my daughter with a pint on my other hand Grin

Pengggwn · 30/07/2018 12:00

Honestly, I would tell him to stop it. It's none of his business.

WeeM · 30/07/2018 12:02

I never had decaf, it’s rank, and I bf for 10 months and baby slept like a dream! In fact sitting in costa whilst feeding was a favourite pastime!

megletthesecond · 30/07/2018 12:02

Yanbu. I didn't do decaff tea when I was bf (or pregnant). I'd rather drink less than have the decaff version.
I had an awful lot of fat coke too which possibly explains a few things.

firawla · 30/07/2018 12:04

It’s fine, I don’t think I know many people who give up caffeine to breastfeed. I’m still bf dd 18 months and have drank coffee throughout with no issues.
Your fil is a bit of an idiot, plus as a man should not try to make out he knows more about breastfeeding than you, by his stupid patronising comments. It’s very rude and controlling

ppeatfruit · 30/07/2018 12:09

In moderation yes and IMO it won't affect your baby's sleep patterns BUT our gd had terrible nappy rash . poor little thing, really painful for her. I suggested to ex dil that it could be the acid in the baby's urine from her heavy coffee habit, when she stopped it the rashes cleared up quickly.

deptfordgirl · 30/07/2018 12:11

I have at least 2 a day. I have a newborn and a toddler so definitely need it! I really don't think much gets through to the baby.

Theweasleytwins · 30/07/2018 12:31

Um how else are you supposed to survive breastfeeding twins😁

You can have coffee while pregnant so why not breastfeeding as long as it's not excessive amounts-Nhs website it useful

mehhh · 30/07/2018 12:34

It's absolutely fine

reluctantbrit · 30/07/2018 12:35

I had only one cup of tea in the morning but DD didn’t like me having dairy, spicy or acids food and fizzy drinks so I was already on a restriction anyway. I would have killed anyone commenting on my food or drink intake.
