On holiday so might get chance to read a book! Any Recommendations welcome

OP posts:

I really enjoyed Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel and the Wool trilogy by Hugh Howdy. Both set years after apocalyptic scenarios.

IHeartKingThistle · 29/07/2018 23:09

Everyone enjoys The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.

Musicalmistress · 29/07/2018 23:54

Pillars of the Earth trilogy - totally didn’t expect to like them but turned out to be a very good read!

Itsnotmesothere · 30/07/2018 00:47

Currently enjoying the Farseer by Robin Hobb. I also downloaded Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson- it's only 99p on kindle at the moment

penguingirl · 30/07/2018 01:57

My favourite sci-fi is Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

Otherwise I would recommend Freedom by Jonathan Franzen as excellent holiday reading.

Oh, and yes, get on it with Neil Gaiman, so good!

PeachesPlumsPears · 30/07/2018 02:14

Started reading books by Bill Bryson which was suggested in another thread. Very funny, well written.

SophieJo · 30/07/2018 06:41

Just discovered Amanda Prowse.
Have read Anna and another book called Theo. Going to the library to find more.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 30/07/2018 06:45

Where are you on holiday? What mood do you want to set?

JT05 · 30/07/2018 07:55

Another vote for Eleanor Olliphant, also The Keeper Of Lost Things.

misskatamari · 30/07/2018 07:56

Ready Player One is brilliant. My absolute favourite book. And totally different to the film if you've seen that.

I've just finished the seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle as well, which was really good. Sort of groundhog day meets murder mystery meets body swap. Really different and clever. Highly reccomend it

MaMaMaMySharona · 30/07/2018 08:09

Another vote for Eleanor Oliphant, A Man Called Ove and Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry! Also along the same lines of the last 2, The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared!

My favourite books are The Goldfinch and (ultimate all time fave) A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara Smile

NicoAndTheNiners · 30/07/2018 08:19

Recently read All The Light We Cannot See which was excellent.

iklboo · 30/07/2018 08:33

Who Sent Clement by Keith A Pearson. I'm really enjoying it.

wilbyroo · 30/07/2018 09:22

The Summer of Impossible Things..just finished it last night...brilliant!

LockedOutOfMN · 30/07/2018 09:39

This is a really helpful thread! Thanks, everyone.

I'll add my 2p on Eleanor Oliphant...I mostly enjoyed reading it but I did find it a little - maybe these aren't the right words - O.T.T. or clichéd. The protagonist, I felt, should have been a slightly more complex and nuanced character but was instead painted in very broad strokes.

softkittywarmkitty28 · 30/07/2018 09:40

The chalk men
Finished it in 2 days- loved it

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 30/07/2018 09:45

I can't find Ghosted by Rosie Walsh on Amazon... is that definitely the right title? There's one called The Man Who Didn't Call - is that the one?

MatildaTheCat · 30/07/2018 09:54

Another vote for the classics, Flowers for Algernon. Although a sci fi (not my favourite) it was a fabulous read and totally absorbing. It’s a classic so you can also feel a bit smug. Smile

Anything by Anne Tyler, anything by Laurie Graham ( my absolute favourite author), the Elly Griffiths series set in Norfolk ( archaeologist helping p9ice investigations), anything by Tessa Hadley.

Life, an exploded diagram, Mal Preet.

Could go on and on. I’ve read quite a lot of the titles above and whilst ok reads some are pretty lame compared to really well written books. Not being a snob, I loved Eleanor Oliphant, I just like a book to be well written.

MatildaTheCat · 30/07/2018 09:56

Also Tracey Chevalier, especially Remarkable Creatures.

PhilODox · 30/07/2018 09:59

If you like sci-fi, then I recommend Alastair Reynolds. Someone recommended his books on a thread a few months ago, and I can't get enough of them- have completely got me back into reading after a too-long hiatus. Definitely the e-reader version though- all his books are about 800 pages long!
Start with Revelation Space.

Can second All The Light We Cannot See- fantastic book (not sci-fi), so well written, I didn't want it to end.
I also loved (reading) A Man Called Ove.
I always like to recommend This Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson. Again- it's a huge book, but I really never wanted it to end- based on Darwin's voyage, superbly written.
For comfort reading, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and William Gibson.

penguingirl · 30/07/2018 14:31

@MatildaTheCat Grin It's a beautiful book isn't it. I always recommend it to people, so few seem to have heard of it, such a shame as it really does deserve it's place in classics.
I also second Anne Tyler, so easy to read yet not simple or boring. Such great characters and I'm always right there with them.

wink1970 · 30/07/2018 14:33

if you like Sci-Fi and have a naughty sense of humour, try the 'Clovenhoof' series by Heide Goody. It's about Satan being exiled to earth, where he ends up living in a flat in Birmingham, creating havoc and getting pissed on Lambrini. Brilliant series.

Stephisaur · 30/07/2018 14:34

@wink1970 that sounds hilarious. Off to order that now!

jj21 · 30/07/2018 14:58

Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce
The Lido by Libby Page
RIvers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
second The Tent, the Bucket and Me and Ready Player One (not like the film)

hidingmystatus · 30/07/2018 14:59

If you like romantic crime fiction with a kickass heroine, JD Robb, Janet Evanovich, SR Garrae.
