Aibu or does it get on your nerves too?! Certain shops when they are scanning your new purchases going on about how nice your new dress is!? Its obviously insincere because they do it with every customer. Im always polite and have chatter with them but I just feel like going obvs that's why im buying it.... what are you trying to achieve?! Grrrr just say hello and the price please that's plenty!!

M&S drive me nuts with this!

“Oooh, that’s a nice top, isn’t it?”
“No, I think it’s fucking horrible. That’s why I’m paying you £30 for it, Susan”.

adaline · 29/07/2018 20:57

It's a mystery shop criteria where I works

Byebyebye · 29/07/2018 20:57

How dare they not stay silent between greeting and informing you of the price. The cheek of them.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 20:57

I work in a dress shop

I might not say anything

But if i like an item of clothing or i know someone who has itor its a nice colour i will comment

Just making conversation Smile

I dont say it to everyone

condepetie · 29/07/2018 20:58

Complain to their central management. This is what they're instructed to do, they don't want to be chatting away to you any more than you want to listen to it, they want to get you through and out of the shop.

It is not their fault, I promise you that. Please try to be kind to them, management can be brutal if you're not smiley/chatty enough especially in clothing/accessories stores.

Bostin · 29/07/2018 20:58

They’re probably hungover

MaryPoppinsUmberellaHandle · 29/07/2018 20:59

I mostly hate it because it makes me uncomfortable and I never know how to respond (seriously! 🤦🏼‍♀️)

afreshnewname · 29/07/2018 20:59

God forbid someone’s trying to be nice and make conversation 🙄

pennycarbonara · 29/07/2018 21:00

Good reason to shop online, to avoid this.
(And differentiating from online is partly why management push this more now, I think.)

travailtotravel · 29/07/2018 21:01

Nice looking cherries. Are they nice?
I'm just buying them. I'll pop back and let you know....

MaryPoppinsUmberellaHandle · 29/07/2018 21:02

However, I don't think they're being intrusive or rude etc. They're just doing their job.

Justanotheruser01 · 29/07/2018 21:03

Oh im always polite my last job had stupid criterias too. And a nice oh is it still raining outside or whatever is fine but critiquing and offering other product suggestions just does my head in.

I think it's better than complete silence. For a lot of customers, it might be the only person who speaks to them in a day. You'd hate it where I live, where most people like a chat when they're helping you.

Why should I have to be practically mute for 10 hours a day just because I work in retail? Because if you want retail staff to say nothing more than a greeting and the total then they might as well put in automatic tills in every store, since computers won't accidentally try to start a conversation with their customers.

Sometimes I will make comments on purchases because I have to as part of our mystery shopping criteria - we have to engage the customers in conversation during the transaction and commenting on their purchases is the easiest way to chitchat - sometimes its because I would like some human interaction during the transaction instead of being treated like a robot who is just there to scan items and read out the total; and sometimes it is because I genuinely like the item and/or have been considering it myself and so will bring it up during the transaction and try to engage conversation based around it.

Ponocky · 29/07/2018 21:09

They're told to do it as part of their job. Affirming your selections is meant to make you feel happier at having made those purchases. Almost like their validating your need to buy the goods. Don't blame the cahsiers. They'll have a manager breathing down their necks to do it, along with pushing in-store credit and asking if you've seen their special buy items of the day.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/07/2018 21:09

I don't so much mind that. What I hate is
When you try something on and don't like and you hand it back and they say. "Was that any good". I feel like saying "Well would I be handing it back if it was,but You just can't be rude to these people. Theyre only doing a job and carrying out orders

Lululemonade · 29/07/2018 21:10

They are just doing their job - as previous poster has said it is on mystery shop criteria so they have to do it. They probably hate doing it as much as you hate hearing it. Just smile and get on with it

alltoomuchrightnow · 29/07/2018 21:10

I worked at TK Maxx and we had to . We were mystery shopped on it, also supervisors would hang around listening. Hauled into the office if we didn't do it, for a verbal warning. I never got one as I did it but plenty others did , some lost jobs over it.

ShatnersBassoon · 29/07/2018 21:11

It's a diktat from on high - make small talk, but nothing too personal e.g. 'I like your face', and nothing too vague e.g. 'ooh, the weather that I can't see from inside this shop eh?'

alltoomuchrightnow · 29/07/2018 21:11

Believe me, it's really hard for shy members of staff to comment on every purchase! for instance a 16 yr old lad who's temping and still at school, making a comment about a woman's underwear purchase!

alltoomuchrightnow · 29/07/2018 21:13

Even when I managed charity shops..we were mystery shopped on this. We also had add on sales, eg if someone bought a dress we'd have to suggest perhaps shoes or a bag to go with it. Drove me nuts. But that is the reality of retail.
I wish everyone could do a stint in retail to see what it's like on the 'other side'!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:14

When you try something on and don't like and you hand it back and they say. "Was that any good". I feel like saying "Well would I be handing it back if it was

Again depends on the shop awwww

In mine the customer quite often gives you the item they want to buy so you can take it to the till for them

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 29/07/2018 21:14

We are told to. I used to comment on stuff I really did like though. And y know those loyalty cards. I used to get into so much trouble when we didn’t sign up enough people. Seriously. A lot of trouble.
