Aibu or does it get on your nerves too?! Certain shops when they are scanning your new purchases going on about how nice your new dress is!? Its obviously insincere because they do it with every customer. Im always polite and have chatter with them but I just feel like going obvs that's why im buying it.... what are you trying to achieve?! Grrrr just say hello and the price please that's plenty!!

Have no objection to the odd comment but in my local (small) supermarket I ALWAYS seem to end up in the queue with the same lady who comments on absolutely everything I buy and any offer she HAS to make sure you have everything included in it. I know she is doing her job / looking out for customers but I do find it really condescending- I am allowed to buy things that are included in a deal without buying them all to get that deal- rant over! Smile

I bought ingredients for a Mixed Berry Tiramasu from Sainsbury's the other week. The lady on the checkout told me I must have been mad to spend that on a dessert, it was a waste of money and I'd have been better off buying a Viennetta! Confused

lindalee3 · 29/07/2018 21:18

Well they mean no harm and are just being friendly. And as a few people have said, some shop assistants are told to be friendly... But I have to say it irks me a bit when I pop my magazine through, and they start reading the front of it and commenting, or they say 'having a party?' when I have 3 bottles of wine, or when they comment on how many yoghurts I am buying... '20 yoghurts...... buying for a football team are ya?'

Mind yer own business ya nosey moo. Hmm

One woman I used to know put in a written complaint once to a certain supermarket because a checkout operator commented on her husband's 'just for men' that he was buying to cover his grey hair. 'THIS FOR YOU IS IT? FOR YOUR GREY HAIR?!' The whole shop heard. Rude, nosey cow. She was there for a few months after, but then suddenly disappeared. Probably sacked in the end.

I like it, as I’m shit at buying clothes so choose to take it as a genuine compliment... Grin

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 29/07/2018 21:30

But then u get an email about the fact that the shop assistant didn’t speak to them and just checked them out. Seriously. There is no winning. These problems are just a few of the reason I no longer work In retail. Which is a shame as I did enjoy it so much.

Jellylover · 29/07/2018 21:32

Drives me mad too. But then it's hard enough dealing with the public all day so I just make small talk and get the transaction over as quickly as I can.
But I was furious in Next today. Went to collect an order and I was asked for my customer number and said I couldn't remember it but could I just give my name and address. Assistant said no, it's data protection, we can't ask for personal details. Dashed back to the car to get my phone and read out the customer number. Assistant said that's great now could you confirm your name and address! I said she didn't need it as it was against her data protection rules. But she just laughed at me and said data protection doesn't include names and addresses. She clearly didn't have any idea what she was talking about and I was cross! Gentle chat about a purchase would have been much easier.

When I worked in retail over Christmas, we were told to. Also had to greet customers at the door and tell them about our offers. Also had other targets. I usually go to the same checkout in my local Sainsbury’s as the lady is really friendly and when I was unemployed it was nice to have a chat for a couple of minutes with someone outside my immediate family!

necromumda · 29/07/2018 21:38

I like the chat and welcome it when someone nice behind the counter starts but commenting on the clothes is just plain old insincere.

"OH , thats a nice top!", er, like you have never seen it before. It's in your shop and probably 10 people have bought it just before me today.

LeighaJ · 29/07/2018 21:39

God forbid a lowly sales person actually has the audacity to talk to you. Hmm Maybe people like you are the reason customer service largely sucks in England.

When I worked briefly as a cashier for a wholesale grocery store in the US I use to comment on food sometimes. "Have you tried this yet?" With a food I've purchased before and like and if they say no I'd assure them it was good. Sometimes I'd ask if they'd tried it yet because I hadn't and was interested in opinions. Other times they'd ask me for feedback on food they were on the fence about.

We also sold clothes, so I might say: "Oh I love these tops, they're really comfortable, I have 5 of them." There weren't changing rooms there to try on things. Or "Oh the baby clothes are such a great deal, so good you're stocking up." The clothes were an excellent deal and moved fast because of that.

I never lied or pretended to care if I didn't, it's called good manners and customer service where I'm from.

Oysterbabe · 29/07/2018 21:40

God I hate it too. I was buying some plain black socks in M&S and got "oh these are nice" Really?

eightfacesofthemoon · 29/07/2018 21:41

@thisisyourcurrentusername1
She’s probably right

When did people become so grumpy. I buy things, every now and again someone says that’s a lovely top. Or I love that colour.
It’s nice. It’s called human interaction
It’s not like America where it definitely feels fake, people who work in shops do have opinions. And they aren’t robots.
Or would you all prefer robots

eightfacesofthemoon · 29/07/2018 21:44

And I’ve been in a changing room and a retail person has said, no that doesn’t work and I’ve really appreciated it.
A robot wouldn’t be able to do that. I despair sometimes.

Im not being insincere Hmm

If i like an item of clothing ill say i like it

If i dont like it (which is usually the case) ill keep my trap shut

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:52

The whole ethos of the store i work in is that we are honest about what looks good on you and what doesnt

We also suggest accessories...from our shop if at all possible but ive been know to suggest other shops

I once told a customer that another stores bobble hats were better than ours...my manager was not happy Grin
