To call 111 back

Woke up this morning with a severe pain in my left groin which went round my hip. Took my breath away, felt like the worst period cramp I'd ever experienced, I'd give it a 9/10. Rolled around a bit, did some deep breathing, An hour later I took some co codamol and it got a bit better. It then started up again and gradually just got worse and worse. The pain was always there but the actual severe agony would come in waves. Rang 111, they said to go to the doctors tomorrow as they didn't have anyone available today to talk to, was relieved they didn't think it was serious.

111 said to phone back if it gets worse and they'll escalate it.

Fast forward 4 hours, the agony is now pretty constant. Pain killers aren't touching the sides. Can barely walk and it's spread to the top of my thigh and round to my back. My only thought is that this is a kidney stone, other wise I have literally no clue. No temp, still eating and drinking fine, just a whole world of crampy, twisting, gnawing pain. Pain makes me quite panicky so I'm worried I'm over reacting in thinking this may be something serious.

Should I phone them or suck it up till tomorrow?

Hate the thought of wasting a doctors time on a Sunday.

Phone them! Or even A and E if it's that bad. Could you be pregnant?

HoleyCoMoley · 29/07/2018 17:05

Definitely call them back. If it's a stone or an infection you need treatment soon, have you injured yourself at all.

SadTrombone · 29/07/2018 17:06

They said to call back if it got worse.
It's gotten worse.
Call them back.
Hope you feel better soon Flowers

rinabean · 29/07/2018 17:06

They told you to ring them back and you should. This isn't wasting time. This is following medical advice.

If 111 were wrong to tell you that, that's 111's problem not yours. But from what you're saying, I don't think they were.

Haworthia · 29/07/2018 17:08

You don’t need 111’s permission to go to A&E.

Someone at the end of the phone, who has no medical training and can’t see you or examine you, can only help so much. My SIL took the advice of 111 and her appendix ruptured and she was very, very ill.

BitOfAKerfuffle · 29/07/2018 17:10

I would call back or go to a&e I experienced similar with an ovarian torsion pain that came and went in waves only it was on my right side for a few days and then it became constant severe pain then constant vomitting and I became extremely unwell very quickly and I honestly felt like I was dying....eventually after ruling out appendicitis and kidney stones and a host of other things and seeing many surgeons who had no idea what was going on a lovely consultant discovered I had internal bleeding and I was taking straight to theatre to find out the cause and it turns out it was an ovarian torsion and even with post surgery pain I felt like a different person when they had sorted the problem !

jaseyraex · 29/07/2018 17:14

I wouldn't even call them back, just go straight to A&E. They'll only either tell you to go there anyway or wait until tomorrow. It's up to you to decide if it's a pain that needs seeing to asap (which it sounds like it is to me).

Popc0rn · 29/07/2018 17:20

I'm a nurse (though not an A&E one!). If the pain has come on suddenly and is so bad you can't walk, then get yourself down to A&E now. Ring a friend/taxi to take you. You need to see a doctor who can properly assess you, they won't think you're wasting their time. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Aridane · 29/07/2018 17:25

111again or starlight to A&E

Aridane · 29/07/2018 17:26

Straight, not starlight

sorrythisnameistaken · 29/07/2018 17:28

Definitely A&E, your health is not something to be gambled with.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 29/07/2018 17:37

Could it be diverticulitis? I read something about it recently and it is quite serious.....

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/07/2018 17:43

I would go to ED. It sounds like it may be a kidney stone and that requires serious analgesia.

purpledreamcatching · 29/07/2018 17:45

Don't bother with 111 go to A&E

LowPainThreshold · 29/07/2018 17:45

Thanks for your replies Thanks

Defo not pregnant @littlebelina - am mid cycle. Was wondering if this meant ruptured ovarian cyst.

Wow @BitOfAKerfuffle that sounds awful.

Am waiting for a nurse to phone me back, after your replies, much rocking back and forth and telling OH not to come near me, I am coming to terms with the fact I will probably be going to A&E, which in this amount of pain sounds pretty horrendous 😣

Go to a walk in or A&E, don’t waste your time with 111. A couple of times they have really let me down, last time I almost ended up with a ruptured appendix. Fortunately I got myself to the hospital in time, no thanks to their crap advice.

Hope you get it sorted out 🌷

HoleyCoMoley · 29/07/2018 17:49

999 if the pain is that bad, dh can pack a little bag for you, maybe don't have anything to eat or drink until you have been assessed.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 29/07/2018 17:49

111 will tell you to go to A&E, I promise you

Mishappening · 29/07/2018 17:51

The folks who answer the 111 calls are only trained to follow the algorithm on their computer screen. If they are in doubt they are able to speak to a nurse, but that is all.

I would take yourself off to A&E - it could be something simple (bowel spasm - your bowel goes a long way up - or a nerve pain from your back) - but it could also be something more serious. In either event, you need some help with this pain.

When my OH rang 111 on my behalf, the algorithm made them send an ambulance - well I was unconscious, grey and sweating!

When I rang 111 about my OH they had no idea what I was talking about when I told them he had atrial fibrillation!

So - straight to A&E I think - and I hope they can sort you out and deal with this pain for you. Good luck.

Mishappening · 29/07/2018 17:52

By the way - you will not be wasting their time - a 9/10 pain is not a waste of their time.

Tini17 · 29/07/2018 17:56

999 without hesitation, they’ll assess you properly (and either send an ambulance or tell you to get yourself to ED). Sounds awful and could be a number of things (be prepared for a long-ish wait though once there).
Hope you’re all better soon, whatever it is.

LowPainThreshold · 29/07/2018 20:28

Been to hospital and seen a doctor (if you're going to have a mystery illness, Sunday night's the night to do it) - he prodded me all over and thinks it's to do with my ovaries, having an ultrasound tomorrow with strong pain meds to get me through the night.

It now hurts when I wee. He said I had a little bit of blood and Leukocytes in my urine, but there needed to be nitrates present as well to make it an infection which i'd never heard of. He asked if I thought I had cystitis, I've never had it, how painful is it? No burning.

Defo not kidney stones or diverticulitis.

OP posts:
Tini17 · 29/07/2018 21:34

Well that’s something - hope you didn’t have to wait too long?
Cystitis can be very painful (it will hurt when you pee) but I’d imagine it wouldn’t be one-sided? Ovarian cyst maybe? When they inflame and pop, it can be like appendix symptoms.
Hope you have an ok night and scan shows whatever it is?

Mishappening · 29/07/2018 22:36

Good luck tomorrw!

ShastaBeast · 29/07/2018 22:40

Rarely UTIs can be excruciating- I had one during my first pregnancy. It was more painful than labour because it was constant. It is possible.
