to think fizzy drinks are a waste of money

DP drinks at least two huge 2L bottles of Pepsi every day, costing about £1.70 each. I know it's petty, but I think this is a waste of money, fizzy drinks aren't food and completely pointless IMO. I can imagine wanting a glass here and there as a treat, but all the time...I just don't get it.

I only have tea and water so maybe I'm just odd. But he buys all these drinks on the joint account while getting groceries which means we're spending huge ammounts on fizzy drinks.

AIBU to think this is bloody silly?

Are you strapped for cash?

Does he have his own account he can use to fund this habit?

cardibach · 29/07/2018 16:03

Two 2l bottles a day is too much. Nothing to do with whether fizzy drinks are a waste of money in themselves - that’s a pretty strange way to look at it.

Amanduh · 29/07/2018 16:04

They aren’t ‘pointless’ and fair enough if people want them, they could say the same about tea, but that’s a different issue. Drinking 4 litres of Pepsi a day cannot be good for your health, jeez. And a huge waste of money. Yadnbu

TopShagger · 29/07/2018 16:04

4L of pepsi every day? I'm not sure it's the money aspect I'd be worried about, that's an abnormal and probably not healthy amount of fizzy pop.

Kpo58 · 29/07/2018 16:05

Drinking 2 2L bottles each day won't be good for his health.

borntobequiet · 29/07/2018 16:05

YANBU.

pacempercutiens · 29/07/2018 16:05

woah! that's ridiculous! me and DH drink 1 - 2 cups of fizzy orange from Aldi per day (42p per 2L bottle) and are considering cutting back the amount of fizzy stuff we drink!

Also, that much Pepsi would be terrible for your teeth!

Sirzy · 29/07/2018 16:06

Can you afford it?

You would need to be sure you don’t “waste” any money before making an issue of it from that sense!

Wuss2018 · 29/07/2018 16:06

It is petty. I'm
Sure he knows that they are not healthy but he decides to still
Buy them and that's up to him. Yes it's expensive because of the sugar tax, but there's probably things you buy which he could find fault in too. From a health point of view why not
Try and buy him
Other soft drinks to try- water and tea is not to everyone's tastes.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/07/2018 16:06

4 L of Pepsi is a huge amount. Is it diet or normal? Either way I’d be quite concerned about his health. You’re also paying quite a lot for it. If he’s resigned to it’s a habit can you bulk buy when on offer/join Costco?

Foodylicious · 29/07/2018 16:07

Well you could argue that drinking anything other than tap water is a waste of money.

4ltrs of anything a day is too much though
Sounds like a habit he could do with breaking if he wants to that is.

Surely he buys it in bulk if drinking that much though , so prob works out a but cheaper?

LimeIce · 29/07/2018 16:07

Not good for his teeth

ThePants999 · 29/07/2018 16:07

That's less of a spend than one high street coffee every day, which some people take for granted.

Oysterbabe · 29/07/2018 16:07

Health aside, yabu. It's ok to spend money on something because you enjoy it. You don't have to always choose the cheapest option.

flowery · 29/07/2018 16:07

They are not a waste of money any more than anything we consume which isn’t necessary or nutritious. Junk food, alcohol, sugar, etc etc

But from a health point of view that’s not good at all.

Foodylicious · 29/07/2018 16:08

If he's not bulk buying it, maybe he should start and putting 14 bottles in the trolley might make him think twice about it

glintandglide · 29/07/2018 16:08

Well it’s not a lot of money for 4L liquid really but it is a waste of money and not really a sensible thing to drink. DH used to drink 2-3 take away coffees at 2.70 each until we got a professional coffeee maker- would he use a soda stream maybe?

PurpleDaisies · 29/07/2018 16:10

Thinking it as a “waste of money” is odd.

It isn’t healthy though.

PickleSarnie · 29/07/2018 16:10

It's the dental bills that will cost the most!

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 29/07/2018 16:11

I’d be more worried about his health and weight than the cost tbh. That’s a huge amount of sugar.

xyzandabc · 29/07/2018 16:12

That is a huge addiction. Unless you are doing a vast amount of exercise, no one needs to drink 4 litres of liquid a day let alone fizzy drinks. A 2 litre bottle of pepsi has over 800 calories, so he's having over 1600 calories everyday just from fizzy drinks as well as the damage to his teeth and no doubt stomach.

All the above is before you even get to the waste of money aspect.

You are definitely NBU. He needs to cut down for his health as well as his pocket.

formerbabe · 29/07/2018 16:12

I agree op. I also feel the same way about alcohol. I'm horrified by the amounts of money people waste on things which are bad for them.

Fifthtimelucky · 29/07/2018 16:14

Hate to think what 4 litres of Pepsi a day is doing to his teeth and his stomach.

PinkHeart5914 · 29/07/2018 16:15

I bet there is things you buy that some would say are a waste of money as well! People are different so like different things, surely as an adult you understand that? So what is it you don’t get? Confused

Some people buy a coffee or tea a day, a newspaper, a magazine, a bar of chocolate, a glass of wine. A few examples of the many things people could say are a waste of money.

I buy fizzy drink becuase I like them 🤷🏻‍♀️ And as yet not even any increased dental bills pp my teeth are very nice thanks

strawberrry · 29/07/2018 16:17

I agree with you OP! I only drink diluted sugar free juice and think that fizzy drinks can be a waste of money, I do like one occasionally but prefer to waste pennies and calories on other treats Grin
