to think fizzy drinks are a waste of money

DP drinks at least two huge 2L bottles of Pepsi every day, costing about £1.70 each. I know it's petty, but I think this is a waste of money, fizzy drinks aren't food and completely pointless IMO. I can imagine wanting a glass here and there as a treat, but all the time...I just don't get it.

I only have tea and water so maybe I'm just odd. But he buys all these drinks on the joint account while getting groceries which means we're spending huge ammounts on fizzy drinks.

AIBU to think this is bloody silly?

I'd be more worried about the danger to his health from drinking so much Pepsi.

Shortstuff08 · 30/07/2018 07:26

The cost wouldn't bother me.

Look in anyone's fridge or cupboards and there is food that no one 'needs. No one needs anything above the basics.

Ok you don't needs tea.

However, it's the fact that it's a huge amount he drinks from a health prospective, that would bother me.

My Dp had a fairly heavy energy drink consumption when I met him. It put me off because of the health implications. Not the cost. Thankfully he realised how ridiculous it was and how bad for his health. And cut down massively. Has one, maybe once or twice a week.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/07/2018 07:32

All those saying that the OP is being petty, tight, unreasonable etc. Her DP is spending A HUNDRED POUNDS A MONTH or OVER A THOUSAND POUNDS A YEAR on crappy sugary fizzy drinks. Of course it's a waste of money and terrible for his health.

He needs to cut down massively and pay for his own treats. Even the most poncy artisan tea enthusiasts won't be spending a fraction of that amount and tea isn't bad for you.

knittingdad · 30/07/2018 07:33

Four litres a day qualifies it as an addiction/obsession in my opinion.

The best that can be said for it is that it's not alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking or gambling.

TheDowagerCuntess · 30/07/2018 08:12

i was responding to the op where she said fizzy drink werent food, neither is tea! Tea has has no nurtional value its water tanin and cafine.

No, tea doesn't have any nutritional value - but it's also not calorie-laden and full of sugar to rot your teeth (apologies - auto-correct, clearly). Fizzy drinks are a triple-whammy.

Frosty6611 · 30/07/2018 08:18

I’d be concerned that he’s having about 50 spoonfuls of sugar a day just from the Pepsi. He must surely be close to type 2 diabetes?

He’s spending around £100 a month on it too which is crazy!

Mousefunky · 30/07/2018 08:20

I did the same with Diet Pepsi a few years ago. I had a morning coffee then would drink that and nothing else. My teeth were fucked and needed multiple fillings and that was from the sugar free stuff. I also had chronic anxiety probably due to the excessive caffeine and aspartame. I do still have the odd bottle but not 2L a day anymore. I lost shed loads of weight dropping it as well because yes, even diet drinks make you gain weight...

Does he see a dentist regularly? I don’t imagine they would be happy with him. It is true people with other addictions will spend more I.e cigarettes but it doesn’t mean it’s healthy for him. Try and get him to cut down to 2L then 1L and so on.

Sevendown · 30/07/2018 08:21

He’s not going to make it to 60!

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2018 08:22

How ridiculously over dramatic seven. Hmm

Chalady · 30/07/2018 08:24

Gross.

How does he even have the time?

WineAndTiramisu · 30/07/2018 08:30

BoxsetsAndPopcorn
Not good for his health but no worse money wise than the tea you drink etc and water still has to be paid for.

No worse money wise than tea? Where do you buy your teabags from?! What a ridiculous thing to say Grin

I'd look how much sugar he's having in a day/week and stick it in front of him in packs, might get him out of the habit?

JacquesHammer · 30/07/2018 08:33

Surely the point is that it is no worse than spending money on other non-essentials.

This issue isn’t fizzy drinks or indeed having fizzy drinks on moderation. The issue is the excess. But saying “it’s a waste of money” isn’t a sensible way to deal with the issue.

JynxaSmoochum · 30/07/2018 08:34

Tea per serving is much, much cheaper than fizzy drinks. Even squash is cheaper. Anything other than tap water is not necessary and an additional expense, but life would be pretty dull if that's all we ever consumed. Few people only consume tap water, so that's not an issue.

However, a large and active person may need 4l of fluid, but for the majority of people, the majority of the time, it's an excessive quanity of fluid. It's an expensive form of fluid. It's also very unhealthy to consume on that scale. Either for the sugar or sweetners depending on the version. For the caffeine. For the acid which is damaging to teeth regardless of the way it is sweetened.

If you look at the giving up diet coke type threads, people often struggle with the side effects of reducing and giving up fizzy drinks. Occasional treats of them are fine, but habits/ addiction really mess the body up.

There are a lot of reasons to significantly reduce/ cut out his Pepsi habit/ addiction!

Kintan · 30/07/2018 08:39

That does seem like an excessive amount healthwise, but why shouldn’t he spend joint money on it? Is everything else you buy equally shared between you or are there certain things only you consume? I’d be more worried about his sugar intake!

bsbabas · 30/07/2018 16:32

Make honey and lime ice tea easier to see how much sugar you put in and still has that caffeine kick

PlantsArePeopleToo · 30/07/2018 16:43

Just the thought of drinking that much pop a day is making my teeth hurt. Ouch!

Horridhenry88 · 30/07/2018 19:29

Is he drinking regular or diet op? I drink diet Pepsi but not at those levels. I know it isnt great for health but I rarely drink hot drinks I would be cross if dh thought that this should not be covered by the food bill. After all a couple of takeaway coffee would cost more.

Chalady · 30/07/2018 22:44

Get him to go cold turkey.

PurpleDaisies · 30/07/2018 22:49

Get him to go cold turkey.

He’s a grown up. It’s highly likely that he knows it isn’t good for him. How exactly do you think the op will makd him stop?

RedDwarves · 30/07/2018 22:54

I wouldn't be worried about the money as much as I'd be worried about the state of his teeth and health from drinking 4L of Pepsi a day. Vile.

Deshasafraisy · 30/07/2018 22:59

His insides must be shredded. I’d be more worried about that

Chalady · 30/07/2018 23:09

How exactly do you think the op will makd him stop?

By telling him to stop acting like Kevin the teenager!
