To not replace all school uniform

Allyg1185 · 28/07/2018 11:54

Everyone I know buys everything new for going back after the summer. Am I the only one that thinks this is a massive waste of money if it's not needed?

I just replaced ds shoes and polo shirts at the easter holidays as the shoes had seen better days and the shirts were evading my stain removing abilities. I've tried on his jumpers and they still fit and aren't washed out.

So new I've bought socks and trousers as they were threadbare at the knees where he has fell etc and socks going the same way. He asked for a new more grown up school bag.

Anyone else the same as me and reuses what they can?

I don’t get the need to buy all new, you can easily get uniform all around (well the generic type, I am sure some specific suppliers are harder to get it from) so why not just replace as needed?

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/07/2018 11:56

Replace as needed. It's madness to buy new for the sake of it. Complete waste.

But then I use a mix of hand me downs and pre loved sale jumpers and supermarket/high street stuff where possible. I usually by shirts new but that's cos they get all grey....

Anything else they wear til it's in too poor a state or is too small.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/07/2018 11:56

I only ever bought what i needed. My DDs school had an expensive uniform so I only replaced those itms which were worn out or too small.

KellyBailey · 28/07/2018 11:56

Why would you replace perfectly good clothes, that makes no sense. I'm with you, I only buy what needs to be bought.

AnotherNewt · 28/07/2018 11:58

I think buying new because of what month it is, rather than because items are outgrown or decrepit, is a prime example of having more money than sense.

Runssometimes · 28/07/2018 12:02

I don’t buy new either. We had a blazer and coat that did 2 years. Also hand me down shorts they did 2 years. I even cut the sleeves off long sleeved shirts for the short sleeved summer uniform two years running. It’s so wasteful to just throw perfectly serviceable clothes away so we just replace when not fitting or worn out.

Allyg1185 · 28/07/2018 12:06

Glad it's not just me I was beginnng to feel like a cheapskate Confused

I’m not getting all new, I’m baffled that anyone would. DD will be getting new shoes, tights, trousers and PE shorts because those items are either worn out or too small. The rest is serviceable and will be replaced if necessary, although as she’s going into y6 I’m hoping not to have to buy anything else and save my money for ruinously expensive secondary uniform instead.

TrueLiesAndAll · 28/07/2018 12:07

I’m not buying the youngest any more trousers, the ones he’s got are fine but everything else needs replacing

longestlurkerever · 28/07/2018 12:08

I was just thinking this. I'm sure I used to go back to school with all new stuff but there's still life left in dd's uniform

Cleanermaidcook · 28/07/2018 12:09

Nope. Buy when needed here, mine just have new pe shorts and shoes this time.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/07/2018 12:12

I only buy new uniform if it’s been grown out of or worn out! DS needs new trousers as his current ones look they’ve had a row with his shoes. They have to come from a specific shop so I should get that sorted ASAP. His jumpers still fit, his PE kit is still fine, his shirts are fine, I bought two new ties last term. He needs new shoes and trainers though.

I don’t get why anyone would replace items that don’t need replacing. Waste of money and not exactly eco friendly either....

GruciusMalfoy · 28/07/2018 12:15

I've replaced things that need replacing, and they'll use their existing things that still have use. It's wasteful to throw out clothing for the sake of what time it is in the school year.

LittleOwl153 · 28/07/2018 12:17

The only thing i buy at this time of year is navy trouser/skirts as i find them difficult tobget in the right size when they are invariably needed mid year - that said the dont automatically go into the wardrobe if others are fine.
I replace dc's polos each year as they only last 2 terms before becoming beyond cleanable. But she wears summer dresses trimester anyway. Same with tights.

But jumpers p.e. kit etc nah it keeps going u til it needs replacing.

Cheerbear23 · 28/07/2018 12:17

No I just buy what’s needed, mine had new shoes in June.
I will buy new shirts as they are too small, but skirts & pinafores that fit will still be used.

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 28/07/2018 12:18

I think a lot buy the whole lot as they don't but in the year so everything is too small and worn out.

I buy as and when needed and have some bits in the next size for a growth spurt. I hate ill fitting, worm, stained clothes etc so replace as it's needed regardless of the month.

drspouse · 28/07/2018 12:18

What a waste, both of money and resources.

RedSkyLastNight · 28/07/2018 12:19

I don't know anyone who buys new everything. You must live in an "odd" area. In fact where people are buying "new" to replace worn out/outgrown items, they are quite often buying second-hand or using uniform previously worn by a sibling/friend's child.

This year I've bought new trousers for DS (already) as his previous ones were way too short. I'll also buy him a new tie as his existing one is threadbare. I'm buying DD a new skirt as she's decided she'd prefer that over trousers (and her trousers in any event had numerous holes).

apart from the waste, I don't have a small fortune I'm prepared to throw away just for the sake of it.

ForalltheSaints · 28/07/2018 12:19

I do not have school age children, but replace as needed sends out a good message to children as well as a message to retailers about quality of clothing.

MumOfDiamonds · 28/07/2018 12:19

I only buy new shirts for the summer term and these last the full year. I buy trousers and skirts as needed. My son has 2 pairs that he can still use so I will buy another pair and my daughters skirts are all fine. They both like a new bag each (there's are pretty shabby now) and new shoes.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/07/2018 12:20

I've never heard of buying new if it's not needed.i have always embraced hand me downs too, what a waste otherwise.

5000KallaxHoles · 28/07/2018 12:21

Just sorted it today - pinafores that still fit the youngest have been passed down as dire emergency ones (they're evil bastards to iron so not going into daily rotation), socks are OK, couple of pairs of trousers are still useable but cardigans and polo shirts I've replaced as the colour's faded (it's OK in July when the entire class have faded equally!) and they've acquired a number of interesting stains I can't get out.

Some outgrown but still decent stuff is going to the charity shop today as well.

dimplesmccutie · 28/07/2018 12:25

i buy everything new again its just what i have always done never occured to me to not do this and everyone in ds class have new as far as i can see buy newq have never heard anyone not buying the full thing brand new.

BigPinkBall · 28/07/2018 12:28

I remember growing up always having trousers and shirts that were too small by the last term of school but parents refusing to buy new until September, I don’t get it at all, just buy new when they need it and don’t be so rigid about buying uniform in September and nothing else for the next 12 months!

MissClareRemembers · 28/07/2018 12:28

I’ve bought everything new but I buy the bare minimum and size up a bit so I don’t need to buy anything else during the year.

I don’t replace PE kit though unless absolutely desperate.
