Just that really, any avid readers! I'm off on holiday and I'd love some ideas of what to read when I'm away. What have you really enjoyed this year?

Books I've read and enjoyed recently
Never let me go Kazuo ishiguro
The Rosie project
Before we met Lucie Whitehouse
We need to talk about Kevin

I like reading Sarah waters and Sophie Hannah

Anyone got any ideas for something new? Thanks!

These are ones I've read recently, all recommended...

Eleanor Oliphant is fine (can't remember the author sorry)
Munich - Robert Harris
Lie in Wait or The Hidden Legacy - Graham Minett
The tattooist of Auschwitz (again, I can't remember author!)

I've just got the new Michael Ondaatje one for my holiday, looks really interesting

I am an avid thriller reader, going of your titles, I don't recognise the genre but I will pass on my wisdom for the book I have literally just finished reading an hour ago, will not lie I only started reading it yesterday a bit of a slow start but my goodness what twists and turns that I never expected.
It was called:
'He Said She Said' by Erin Kelly.

dizzydaisies · 27/07/2018 21:19

And if you want more light hearted, try The Cows by Dawn O'Porter - easy going but still interesting

Nestlyn · 27/07/2018 21:21

Just finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. Really enjoyed it.

Cherubfish · 27/07/2018 21:22

I recently enjoyed Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny.

OhTheTastyNuts · 27/07/2018 21:23

The Ocean at the end of the lane by Neil Gaiman

The turning point by Freya North

ShinyMe · 27/07/2018 21:23

Well don't read I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. It was recommended to me and I'm just finishing it. Whilst I have wanted to keep reading and I have enjoyed it in some ways, it's utter rubbish. Biased and improbable, misogynistic and Islamophobic and the hero could have been dreamt up by a 13 year old boy. The only reason I'm still reading is that he's tricksy with his very short chapters and cliffhangers, so I do want to know what happens. It's a sort of spy thriller murder mystery thing with about eleventy million pages.

A man called ove
The 15 lives of harry August
Shardlake series
Uncommon life of Alfred warner in 6 days
The cazalet chronicles

Gardenpicnic · 27/07/2018 21:26

I loved The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and the follow up / companion about Miss Queenie Hennessey.

Also thoroughly enjoyed Alan Johnson's autobiographies and Graham Norton's too, they both write so engagingly.

Closer Than You Know, Brad Parks

RandomWordsandaNumber5 · 27/07/2018 21:28

Just reading ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potoato Peel Pie Society’.
It’s a really good holiday read.

pangolina · 27/07/2018 21:29

Less: A Novel.
Fabulous book.

OwlinaTree · 27/07/2018 21:30

Thanks I'll look at some of those.

Where are you going on holiday? I like reading something where it's set - your destination might give us ideas.

cardibach · 27/07/2018 21:33

The Mermaid’s Sister by Carrie Anne Noble
Holding by Graham Norton
Michelle Hodkin’s series which begins with The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - young adult fiction with a supernatural twist.

scarlettoftheseas · 27/07/2018 21:34

The Bridget Jones books are good fun!
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan is brilliant (American Chinese dating a Singaporean man goes to meet his family who are super super rich. It's quite funny)
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (so good! Two black maids and a white reporter tram up to tell their stories. One of my favourites)
I've read all of these on holidays and they've been my favourites so far!

scarlettoftheseas · 27/07/2018 21:35

Oops. Chinese American woman and team up, not tram up!

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 27/07/2018 21:37

Is 'Cows' the one with the Walthamstow wank woman? ... I loved that, Elinor oliphant is absolutely ace too

MarshaBradyo · 27/07/2018 21:37

I enjoyed The Dry
And anything by Liane Moriarty

Goandplay · 27/07/2018 21:54

I concur: Eleanor Oliphant Is Doing Fine; all Lianne Moriarty and The Dry!

Just finished The Keeper Of Lost Things.

I’ve read the books you mentioned in your OP and think you’ll like the above. Especially the Eleanor Oliphant book; similar to The Rosie Project the begin with but then not at all.

Enjoy!

HopelessWithNumbers · 27/07/2018 22:09

After The Party by Cressida Connolly. It’s not light, but it’s beautifully written.

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/07/2018 22:11

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (his best work IMO)

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 27/07/2018 22:14

I've taken a notion to Anita Shreve's books lately. I find I get really drawn into the characters.

Oh and there's always my guilty secret - Rosamund Pilcher!

hidingmystatus · 27/07/2018 22:15

JD Robb's In Death series - Naked in Death is the first one.
SR Garrae's Death in Focus.
Both romantic crime cop stories.

Smoothsailing9 · 27/07/2018 22:19

Recent favourites include:
The Wonder by Emma Donoghue
The Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths

The reading groups at the library where I work seem to be constantly clamouring for The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain, although I haven’t read it yet.
