DS7 had his heel lanced today, and i thought it would be a quick job and would be healed within a few days, but have been told that he cannot walk on it for 10 days at all, other than trips to toilet, he has to rest. We can't go away until doc signs us off after 10 days, wound has dressings which need to be re done every 2 days, we can't do the fun stuff we normally do out and about - normally a lot of walking, running, swimming, sport. Can't play in garden in paddling pool or mess around. Can't go to beach.

Does anyone have any amazing ideas about what we could do??? I have had a difficult time the last 4 weeks or so, and I am feeling all out of anything positive. TIA

Minecraft?
I feel for you my 7 year old would be feral if she could not run about for half an hour never mind 10 days.

73kittycat73 · 27/07/2018 21:22

I know it's old fashioned, but jigsaw puzzles? Hangman, Battleships, any board games? I hope the recovery goes well. Smile

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 27/07/2018 21:24

Board games
Drawing
Can you still buy Spirographs? Or Etch-a-sketch?
Fuzzy felts? (Showing my age now Grin)
Would beads be too girly?
Screen time and more screen time?
Puzzles? Something like a Rubic's cube?

Cismyass · 27/07/2018 21:28

Make slime? paint, anything crafty-Fimo, clay, bake (in this heat i know), scrapbook, put photo albums together, do yoga, buy in some kits, bathbomb making, marbling, those plastic things you spray with water once you've made a shape/pattern, puzzle books, write/illustrate a book, making friendship bracelets, papier mache/plaster of paris modelling, painting rocks if they do the hiding/searching thing.

I broke my leg when I was 7 and was bed bound for 4 weeks. My favourite activities were puzzle/activity books that had something new in each page that lasted about 10 minutes. When it got hot my mum wrapped my leg in a garbage bag and I could lay in the paddling pool with my toys with my leg up on a chair to keep it dry.

Do you have any crutches he can use?

AuditAngel · 27/07/2018 21:46

Sticker books, movies, colouring, subbutteo

adaline · 27/07/2018 21:51

Board games
Colouring in
Video games
Film days
Baking/cooking
Reading challenge
Lego or model building
Jigsaw puzzles
Puzzle books or activity books
Could you rent a wheelchair and go to the zoo or similar attraction?
Cinema
Special trip out for lunch/dinner/afternoon tea or to the ice cream parlour or something?

ncbency · 27/07/2018 22:15

Thank you for all these. We already do a lot of the at home activities and he loves what we do (and I will try all the new ideas on the lists!) but we have always balanced it by going out to run around or walk a few miles every couple of days or he becomes a lunatic. My mother has suggested using a pram to take him for walks for a change of scenery and ds thinks that is a great idea if he fits!

The mean part of me thinks we can also do lots of reading and maths practice ho ho.

@zoewashbune that is a good idea about the pool, with the foot in a bag!

My 5.5 year old would be delighted to spend all day on Xbox, computer and watching TV! 😂

BrazzleDazzleDay · 27/07/2018 22:19

Oh poor wee ds :( crutches maybe? Or a wheelchair? Our british heart foundation shop loans them out.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 27/07/2018 22:22

nc zoes got a good idea provided you can help manovre him, i remember as a kid my dad taping up his post CTS surgery wrists and broken ankle in bin bags for a swim with us dc

forgotMyusernameAgain · 27/07/2018 22:23

My sister had perthes disease and was immobile/on calipers for a few years as a child. My dad got her a mechanics board she could lie on and push herself around on so she could play out with the rest of us. Recommend helmet and pads if you do, just a thought

Oldieandgoldie · 27/07/2018 22:25

See if you can hire a small wheelchair for him?

Lougle · 27/07/2018 22:26

British Red Cross could loan you a wheelchair so you can get out and about, too. It won't be fancy, but you'll be able to go and get fresh air.

NC4Now · 27/07/2018 22:27

Another one suggesting crutches.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 27/07/2018 22:27

What about a Raspberry Pi? You can get kids kits and if he's into fiddly creating then it could be a good background project to keep going back to. www.techwillsaveus.com/shop/microbit-microcraft-pack/?gclid=CjwKCAjwhevaBRApEiwA7aT53xEv11hqNkLkI87wejLLIy3Ia3RA6hIVKZi3XmElrM4-gk1Ej9UabBoCHnIQAvD_BwE

Thanks for all the lovely comments, it has really cheered me up!

When I first heard the only thing in my head was AAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!

I have realised also that we'll have quite a few weeks of summer afterwards to make up for it. It will be fine...!!! (Though so far he has laughed in the face of the instruction, every time i turned my back he was up and off somewhere)

Stop start animation is fun. Agree to get him crutches. Ask on Facebook there is probably someone with some lurking, often the hospital doesn't ask for them back.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 27/07/2018 22:36

No new ideas...
But when my son was about that age, he hurt his ankle.
We still had his buggy in the garage (hoping for dc2 ).
I laid the back completely flat, as if ready for a newborn to sleep on. This gave a much bigger area for him to sit on. With his legs straight out the front.
The hood/canopy bit acted as a back support.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 27/07/2018 22:38

Actually, I do have another suggestion.
If he likes to draw or take photos, pack a picnic and some pens or paints etc.
Go out somewhere interesting and paint something
A church?
Windmill?
Favourite animal in the zoo?

icelolly99 · 27/07/2018 22:43

As cismyass suggested, rock painting then you can go out and hide them together when he's able to run around again. Smile

stopgap · 27/07/2018 22:45

Definitely Board/card games. My almost 7-year-old DS almost daily plays Uno, Game of Life and Connect 4. Does your son like to read? The Galaxy Zack book series is a lot of fun.

Fruitbatdancer · 27/07/2018 23:12

If you can invest it it these are brilliant and come in kids sizes too! Brilliant for showers, baths, and especially paddling pools! A little more secure than a bin bag and gaffs tape! (DH had 3 months with a full leg cast! Nightmare!)
